Wd Chips Tell Yu A Lt - The chips shuld, e abut the size f the chain teeth. If they are small and pwd Hke, yur chain is dull. Get it Sharpened! Dn't Press Hard - Light pressure is enugh Heavy pr, sure can cause unsafe cnditins Check fr a dull chain r _ rn bar (See Guide Bar Maintenance and Chain Sharpening). Guide Bar HAND GUARD MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS HAND GUARDS DO NOT ELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF INJURY AS A RESULT OF KICKBACI{ OR LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE CHAIN SAW READ OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY SCREWS e_ CAP HANDGUARD 1 Assemble the hand guard t the bend in the handlebar as shwn Be sure alignment pin n guard is inserted in hle in handlebar D nt tighten the screws 2 Make sure the hand guard is parallel t the handlebar Alternately tighten each hand guard munting screw maintaining an even gap between the hand guard and munting cap 3 Tighten the munting screws until the hand guard and munting cap are pulted tgether Cautin: Screws must be tightened evenly t prevent breakage

4 BarClamp Figure 1 INSTALLING THE BAR AND CHAIN Always wear glves when handling the chain! It is sharp! I Remve the bar munting screw washer, and bar clamp with the bar wrench supplied with yur saw Remve ne (I) f the tw guide plates (Figure I ),, 2 Setting the adjusting pin all the way t the rear (Figure 5), place the guide bar slt ver the guide bar studs and slide it t the rear (Figure 2} 3.= Fit the chain ver the clutch and nt the guide bar Be sure the cutters face the way shwn in Figure 3 and that the drive link tangs engage the sprcket teeth, On Craftsman 2 3PS engage chain drive links in grve f _im sprcket teeth 4, With the adjusting pin fitted int the bar (Figure 3)0 replace guide plate, bar clamp, washer, and tighten the bar munting screw FINGER TIGHT, 5 Hlding the tip f the bar up (Figure 5) turn the adjusting screw clckwise until the chain is snug n the bar, 6, Lift the chain near the middle f the bar (Figure 6) When tensined _ight, the chain will lift abut 1/8" frm the bar Figure 6 shws the crrect tensin, Adjust yur chain unti! it lks like this 7 Hlding the bar tip up, tighten the bar clamp screw firmly,, The chain shuld mve freely arund the bar but nt sag belw it Figure 2 CHAIN STRETCHES WHEN USED, TENSION OFTEN! 5 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Befre Starting O Check the chain tensin Is the chain sharp? O Are the handles clean f gas and il? O Did yu fill the fuel AND il tanks? FUEL and OIL Fuel Mix: 16 parts gasline t 1 part il (1/2 pint il t ne galln gasline) Use air cled tw cycle engine ii fr fuel mix CAUTION: When preparing fuel mixture, mix nly the amunt needed fr the jb yu are t d.. D nt use fuet mixture that has been stred tnger than tw (2) mnths. Fuel mixture stred lnger than this will cause hard starting and pr perfrmance f yur saw If fuel mix has been stred in yur saw lnger than this time it shuld als be remved and filied with a fresh mixture befre using Chain Oil: Fr cld weather peratin, abve 30 F, use straight Craftsman Bar and Chain Lubricant 30 F t 0 F, use 5% diesel fuel #:1 r kersene and 95% Lubricant; belw 0 F, use 10% diesel fuel if' I r kelsene and 90% Lubricant If Bar and Chain Lubricant is nt diluted adequately, ti_e il system f the chain saw will nt pump enugh il fr adequate lubricatin f Bar and Chain A WORD ABOUT CHAIN OILING I Fill the il lank each time yu fill the fuel tank Lack f it n the chain will quickly ruin the bar and chain 2 Yu wilt use at least 1/3 tank f il fr each tank f gas If yu use less, check fr a plugged il hle in the guide bar Use clean il D nt let sawdust r dirt int the i! tank Clean the il cap and the area arund it befre remving, A little il will pump ut after the engine stps Oil n the_ar and chain will drip ff after use Let the saw stand and cl ff Wipe the bttm clean befre string STARTING Mve bystanders and bstructins well ut f reach! Release the trigger after the engine starts 1 Mve ignitin switch frward t "start" 2 Push chke lever "n" (t right) 3 Hld the rear handle in yur right hand and squeeze the trigger 4. Hld the starter handle in yur left hand. 5, Push the saw away frm yu while pulling the starter quickly HOLD THE SAW FIRMLY D nt let the starter snap back Hld the handle and let the rpe rewind slwly 6 After a few puils, the engine will fire 7 Return the chke t its riginal psitin 8, Pull until the engine starts, Allw 8 t 10 pulls fr a new unit r ne which has been stred fr time, The chain must nt mve when the engine idles., See maintenance sectin 9. If engine des nt fire after 5t 6pulls, it may be flded Push chke ff (clckwise) and pull starter several times while hlding trigger at wide pen thrttle If saw has run ut f fuel 8 t 10 puns with chke n may be required t restart engine When restarting a ht engine, r ne which has just been refueled, yu may have t chke the engine fr ne r tw pulls 10 T stp engine, mve switch back t "stp" psitin The engine may als be stpped by pushing the chke lever t the right (cunter clckwise) Push the saw away frm yu while pulling the starter quickly CUTTING TIPS _' Read the safety tips in the frnt f this manual. Always keep yur chain sharp, Plan Ahead Check The Wind - If it is strng enugh t mve the tp f the tree, DONT CUT! Cme back anther day! Check The Lean-Tie a weight t a piece f string abut 3 feet lng. Hang the weight in yur line _ sight The string is a gd vertical line t help yu iudge the lean f the tree The tree witl try t fall the way it is leaning. Check The Weight Distributin - A tree is heavier n the side with the mst limbs. It will try t fall n its heavy side Trim a few limbs t "balance" the tree Clear The Wrk Area - Yu need a clean area all arund the tree fr gd fting Get everything ut f the area where the tree will fall Peple, pets, cars, etc Find a Retreat Path - Knw which way yu are ging when the tree starts t fall Make sure it is clear. _q3 Directin <-- f Fall'

6 FELLING (Cutting dwn a tree) Fellin Cut Fig. X recti0n f Fall A Small Trees - Less than 8" acrss 1 If there is dubt abut the directin f fatl, use "ntch" methd described in B 2.. Make a single felling cut n the side away frm the directin f fall. Dn't cut all the way thrugh! 3, When the tree starts t fall, turn saw ff, put the saw dwn and GET AWAY QUICKLY! B Large Trees - 8" r larger acrss (Fig X) 1. The ntch is very imprtant The tree will try t fall "int" the ntch 2.. Make the bttm ntch cut first, abut 1/3 t 1/2 way int the tree 3 Cmplete the ntch with the slant cut Remve the wedge f wd befre ging n, 4, The felling cut is next Make it n the side ppsite the ntch 5 It is made 2" higher than the bttm f the ntch 6. DO NOT try t cut thrugh t the ntch.. 7. Asthe treestartst fall, turn saw ff, put thesaw clwn and GET AWAY QUICKLY! BUCKING Fig. Y Bucking is the sawing f a lg r fallen tree int smaller pieces_ [] Use Bth Hands - grip the saw firmly with the thumb and frefinger wrapped arund the handle O Stand Uphill - a lg that is cut lse wilt rll dwnhill. [] Keep The Chain Out Of The Dirt - dirt will dull the chain. A dull chain is unsafe, [] Stand t the left f the saw_ Hw T (Fig_ Y) A In area "A", cme up frm the bttm 1/3 f the way. Finish by cming dwn frm the tp, B In area "B', cme dwn frm the tp t/3 f the way. Finish by cming up frm the bttm PRUNING AND DEBRANCHING 1 Be Careful O Use Bth Hands - keep a firm grip. O Lk Out Fr Kickback -- dn't let the tip f the bar tuch anything while the engine is running= O Dn't Cut Overhead - keep the saw belw chest high The chain is t clse t yur face in this psitin 2 Pruning (Cutting limbs frm standing tree) O Dn't Use The Saw in A Tree - It is very dangerus_get prfessinal help,. O Keep Bth Hands On The Saw - keep a firm grip O Be Sure Of Yur Supprt - dn't cut ff balance, O Cut Up Frm The Bttm, Finish Dwn Frm The Tp 3 Debranching (Cutting the limbs frm a fallen tree) O Cut On The Oppsite Side Of The Tree - keep the tree between yu and the chain, O Be Sure Of Yur Fting - wrk slwly and deliberately O Lk Out Fr Springples - limbs bent under pressure wilt snap up at yu when cul

7 MAINTENANCE Carburetr Adjustment _t BE CAREFUL! The chain will be mving during this prcedure Figure 7 1 Stp the engine 2 Remve the carburetr cver (Figure 7) Turn the high speed (Figure 8) and lw speed mixture screws clckwise _ (Figure 8) until they stp Dn't tighten them, yu may damage the needle seats! 3. Turn the high speed and lw speed mixture screws ne full turn cunterclckwise 4 Start the engine If it stps, increase the idle speed!figure 8) by turning the idle speed screw clckwise _, Keep dirt and sawdust away frm the carburetr while the cver is remved, 5, Run the engine fr a few minutes t bring it up t perating temperature 6 Set the idle speed as fast as pssible withut the chain mving Turn the idle speed screw clckwise _=_ fr faster idle. cunterclckwise _ fr slwer idle I / 7 Squeeze the trigger quickly If the engine stps, restart it The engine shuld accelerate withut hesitating when the trigger is squeezed If it des nt, turn the tw speed mixture screw cunterclckwise _ 1/16 f a turn and check the acceleratin again If the idle speed slws while adjusting the lw speed mixture, reset the idle speed as in step 6 Cntinue step 7 until acceleratin is smth Chke Clsed Figure 8 8 Make a test cut with the saw (keep sawdust ut f the carburetr!) 9 If the engine seems t smke excessively in the cut, turn the high speed mixture screw clckwise _ 1/16 f a turn Repeat step 8 and 9, if necessary WARNING: The high speed needle must never be less than 7/8 turn pen T lean f a setting will quickly ruin the engine 10 If the engine seems t weaken r lse pwer in the cut, turn the high speed mixture screw cunterclckwise _ 1/16 f a turn at a time until the saw cuts smthly The high speed mixture screw shuld nt be pen mre than ty& turns (cunterclckwise _ ) frm the stpped psitin in step Reset the idle speed (see step 6) Replacing carburetr cver Idle Speed Screw High Speed Mix Screw Lw Speed Mix Screw _' Incrrect placement f the cver will prevent the chke frm wrking Figure 9 t Mve the chke knb a[t the way in the chke directin 2 Mve the chke shutter t the chke clsed psitin (See Figure 8) 3 Place the cver n the saw and tighten the screws 4 Check the peratin f the chke If the knb sticks r wn't mve, remve the cver and repeat the prcedure abve Air Filter Air Filter Clean the air filter after every t0 tanks f gas r every 5 hurs f peratin. 1 Remve the carburetr cver and pull ut the filter (Figure 9) 2 DO NOT clean yur filter in gasline r ther flammable slvent Blw the dirt ff with cmpressed air r wash filter in sap and water 3. Replace the filter and carburetr cver

8 Figure 10 / Figure 11 Starter Rpe If yur rpe breaks near the pulley, it can be repaired by this methd. Otherwise, replace the rpe,. 1 Remve the pulley screw and pulley very carefully. The recil spring ties beneath the_pulley Twist the pulley gently as yu pull up t release the spring The spring must stay in the husing, flat against the bttm, 2. Burn the rpe end and run it thrugh a rag befre it cls. An enlarged end will keep the rpe frm fitting nt the pulley.. Dn't tuch the burned end,. It is ht! 3 Feed the rpe thrugh the husing, int the pulley, and up thrugh the pulley hle as in Figure 10..A sharp bjen_tr stiff wire will help yu get the rpe thrugh the holer. 4.. Tie a knt in the end f the rpe Pull it very tight against the pulley 5, Replace the pulley in the husing, Be sure the pulley isall the way dwn and the spring is engaged Replace and tighten the putley screw. 6 Rewind all the rpe nt the pulley "by turning cunterclckwise lf_ 7. Putl abut 5 inches ut as shwn in Figure 11 and set the rpe in the pulley slt 8 Make three cmplete turns f the pulley clckwise _=_. Pul! the starter handle t the full extent f the rpe and let the rpe rewind slwly. GUIDE BAR MAINTENANCE V Check the cnditin f the guide bar ften, A wrn bar will damage the chain and make cutting harder Figure 12 Crrect Rllver Wrn Raiis & Rails Grve P Uneven Rails 1 Figure 12 shws a crss-sectin f the guide bar Keep the edges square as in 1 with a flat file 2 Rltver is shwn in 2. This wili cause yu t press extra hard when cutting,, 3 Wrn rails are shwn in 3 This ccurs mst ften at the guide bar nse 4. Uneven rails are shwn in 4 This will cause the saw t cut n an angle 5 Keep the rails flat and square as shwn in 1,. Figure 13 \ Align ]'he File Hlder Figure 15 '\ / File In One Directin Only Figure 14 File Guide Press Hard Figure 16 Always Check Depth Gauges CHAIN SHARPENING (Refer t page 10 fr tls) O Keep Yur Chain Sharp Dirt will duel a chain instantly Keep the chain ut f the dirt, if the chain cuts t ne side, it is dull Extra rugh cutting is a sign f a dul_ chain,, Pwder-like wd chips mean a dull chain Cutting is much easier and safer with a sharp chain_ O T Sharpen (Craftsman 2 3 A Only) 1 Set the chain tensin right Yu must still be able t mve the chain arund the bar, 2 Clamp the guide bar in a vise, Dn't clamp the chain! Clamp in the center f the bar 3 Use 5/32" file nly 4, Sharpen all the cutters away frm yu first, Then turn the saw arund and sharpen the cutters n the ther side_ 5. AIign the file hlder marks with the bar as shwn in Figure 13. Using 30 mark n file hlder.

Tw r three strkes shuld d it Always check the depth gauge with the depth gauge filing guide after filing: If the depth gauge sticks ut, file it ff with a flat file, Figure 16 SHARPENING ('Craftsman 2.3PS Only) Figure t7 1 With engine "OFF", adjust the chain t fit snug n bar (Figure 6, page 4). 2.. Rtate depth adjustment knb cunterclckwise (ppsite directin f arrw n knb) until tight (Figure 17) 3 Start engine, allw it t warm up, then with engine at HALF thrttle, push scillating knb (Figure _7) t the extreme left ut f lcking slt and pull back n knb_ If sparks d nt appear cming frm tp f g_ide bar in frnt f bar clamp release knb and turn depth adjusting knb ne click in directin f arrw. Pull back n scillating knb again. Repeat abve prcedure until a small shwer f sparks can be seen. 4_ When sparks appear, mve the scillating knb rapidly frm side t side.. It shuld take abut 5 t 10 secnds t sharpen a dull chain.. DO NOT versharpen. A prperly sharpened chain cutter is illustrated in Figure Abut every 4th r 5th pwer sharpening, the cutter side plates shuld be filed Oscillating Figure 18 Knb,pth Adjusting Knb Tp View f Cutter FILING ( Craftsman 2,3PS Only) I Set the chain t prper tensin. Yu must still be able t mve the chain arund the bar. 2, Clamp the guide bar in a vise, Dn't clamp the chain! Clamp in the center f the bar 3. Use 5/32" file nly. 4 Align the file hlder marks with the bar as shwn in Figure 21, using 22 mark n file hlder 5_ Hld the file level, perpendicular t the bar, Figure 2 I. 6. File in ONE directin nly! Figure 22, 7. Sharpen all the cutters away frm yu first. Then turn the saw arund and sharpen the cutters n the ther side. Press hard! Tw r three strkes shuld d it Tp Plate _,,. Stre in a dry area and cver t prtect frm dust,
