1 6 th and 7 th Grade Advisry Plans (Week 16) This week in Advisry: On Mnday students will check in and share ut. On Tuesday- Thursday, students will participate in a fun grup building activity t minimize stressrs they feel during the hlidays. On Tuesday and Wednesday grups will create a ROBO wheel. On Thursday, each advisry will cmpete against anther advisry- racing their ROBO wheels. ***Advisrs will need t bring either masking tape r duck tape t advisry n Tuesday *** Rutine Reminder Students shuld walk int the meeting area and answer the DAILY NEWS n the bard(s), get int their CIRCLE, and listen t the mrning annuncements. After mrning annuncements, students GREET each ther and then begin t check-in. Mndays are all abut the CHECK-IN. It is imprtant t really scaffld students t get them sharing as much as pssible. Once each student has had the pprtunity t check-in the grup may begin the ACTIVITY. 5 minutes befre transitin, the grup may REVIEW the answers n the daily news bard and/r REFLECT n the activity. Day 1 Objective: Student will check in and share ut. Materials Needed: nne 1.Daily News: What is ne traditin yu have during the hlidays? (5 minutes) 2.Greeting: Everyne Greets and is greeted (students sit in a circle) 3.Frmal Sharing/ Check-in: (10 minutes) Tday we will nt nly check in 1-5 but we will als share whatever we want with ur grup. We can share by answering these three questins: What did yu d this weekend? What are yu lking frward t ding during the break? What class are yu lking frward t tday? What is ne thing yu learned in schl last week? Did yu attend the girls/bys basketball game last week? 5. Review Daily News and Discuss: (5 minutes) Ask the fllwing questins t guide students in reflectin: What des yur family d every hliday? D yu eat specific fd? D yu play specific games? 2 Day 2 and Day 3 OBJECTIVE: Students will create a grup ROBO wheel which they will use t race against anther advisry n Thursday. Materials Needed: 2 paper bwls, 2 rubber bands, 3 feet f string, 1 thumbtack/pushpin, tape (duck r masking), 1 sharp pencil. Tuesday Daily News: Have yu ever created smething ut f husehld items? If s, what? Wednesday Daily News: What skills d yu use when yu wrk as a grup/team in a cmpetitin? 2. Greeting: Everyne Greets and is greeted (students sit in a circle) 3. Check-in: (5 minutes) 4. Activity: Creating a ROBO wheel Prcedure: Review Daily News. Allw time fr students t share their creatins. Share with students that they will be participating in an advisry challenge where they will be racing ROBO wheels. Shw this vide t give students a better idea f what a ROBO wheel can d: Break yur advisry int tw grups. Each grup will create a ROBO wheel. Give students all materials and the fllwing instructins n hw t create a ROBO wheel: (This will take tw days.) 1. Find the center Nest the bwls tgether. Wrap a rubber band arund the bwls. Slide it right and left until it divides the bttm circle f the bwl int tw equal halves. Make an "X" with the ther rubber band. The fur quarters make fur "pizza slices." Mve the rubber bands until all fur "pizza slices" are f equal size. The center f the circle is where the rubber bands crss. 2 P a g e

3 2. Mark the spt Mark tw dts n each side f the center. Make them equal distance frm the center and abut a half inch apart. (Abut the width f yur index finger) 3. Make the hles With yur dts as a guide, use the pushpin t pke hles in the bwls 4. Widen the hles Remve the rubber bands and separate the bwls. Pke a sharp pencil int a pushpin hle. Twist it and push gently. Stp when the hle is just a bit bigger than the string. That's usually arund where the wd part f the pencil starts, just after the black lead. TIP: If yur tw hles get larger and becme ne big hle Make tw new hles in the tw ther pizza slices near the center. Keep them small. Set them a finger s width apart. 3 P a g e

4 5. Thread the string Begin by threading the string thrugh the bttm f Bwl 1, starting frm the utside. Next, thread the string thrugh ne f Bwl 2's hles, cming frm the inside. TIP: If threading the string thrugh the hles is hard t d Try ding ne f these: a) Wet the end f the string. b) Wrap the tip in clear tape t stiffen it (like the hard tip f a shelace). c) Push the string thrugh the hle with the pencil. d) Re-pke a hle s its little paper rim is bent in the directin the string is ging. e) Make the hle a little bigger. 6. Thread the string (cnt'd ) Then thread the string thrugh the bttm f Bwl 2, cming frm the utside. Finally, thread the string thrugh the pen hle in Bwl 1, cming frm the inside. Tie the ends f the string tgether with a knt. 4 P a g e

5 7. Thread the string (cnt'd ) The tw bwls shuld face each ther, with the string lping thrugh them. 8 Tape the bwls Tear ff fur 2-inch squares f tape. Fr nw, stick them where they will be easy t grab. Line up the bwls s the hles are even with each ther. 5 P a g e 9. Tape the bwls (cnt'd ) Stick the tape s the pieces are acrss frm each ther.

6 10. Wind up the string Slide yur wheel t the middle f the string lp and hld bth ends. T twist the string, push the wheel acrss the table r flr r ask a friend t help yu spin the wheel t wind up the string. 11. Spin the wheel Pull utward n the string. The wheel will spin as the string untwists. Pull hard. Stp pulling just befre all the twists unwind. 12. Spin the wheel (cnt'd) Bring yur hands tgether s the string is lse and the wheel sags dwn a bit. The Rb Wheel will keep spinning and will twist the string in the ther directin. When the wheel stps spinning, pull ut again, hard. 6 P a g e

7 TIP: If yu re having truble revving up the wheel The Pull-Relax technique takes a mment t master. Just like a y-y r pumping n a swing, it s abut getting the timing right. Sn yu ll have the wheel spinning quickly. 13. Practice revving up Nw that yu've practiced spinning the wheel, try releasing it. Hld the string with yur thumbs in the lp. Hld the wheel just abve where yu want t launch it. Spin the wheel frwards and backwards a few times t get it revved up. 14. Release the wheel Wait until the wheel is spinning away frm yu t begin yur release. Let the string unwind until it is almst cmpletely untwisted. (At this pint, there will be lts f rm fr yur thumbs t release the string.) Drp the string, and watch yur wheel g! 7 P a g e

8 After students build their ROBO wheel- have them cmpete against each ther fr practice. Have students create a cl design n their ROBO wheel. Remind students t cheer each ther n during the race tmrrw. 5. Review Daily News and Discuss: (5 minutes) Ask the fllwing questins t guide students in reflectin: Wednesday: Skills that peple use when wrking as a team are: cmmunicatin skills, participatin skills, brainstrming skills, listening skills, turn-taking skills- these are all imprtant skills t develp. Day 4 OBJECTIVE: Students will race their ROBO wheels against anther advisry. Materials Needed: ROBO wheels 1.Daily News: GO TEAM!!! (Write wrds f encuragement fr tday s race.) 2. Greeting: Everyne Greets and is greeted (students sit in a circle) 3. Check-in: (5 minutes) 4. Activity: ROBO Wheel Race Prcedure: 8 P a g e

9 After breakfast/lunch cunt and attendance, meet with yur cmpetitr in the assigned lcatin (see belw.) 6 th Grade Wilkinsn VS. Cardna (Wilkinsn s Rm) Rdriguez VS. Perry VS. Medeirs (6 th Grade Quad) Cnstantine VS. Krassner (Krassner s Rm) 7 th Grade Crdeir VS. Chevalier/Sala VS. King (Caf) Ballah VS. Smerville (SOMERVILLE s Rm) LUCIANO VS. Rsenbaum (Rsenbaum s Rm) Advisrs will facilitate this cmpletin. 1. T facilitate the cmpletin yu MUST create a start line and a finish line (Use masking tape t mark each line n the grund.) I suggest starting with a finish line 5 feet away frm the start line and then increasing it depending n students prgress. 2. Pair 1 student frm yur advisry with ne student frm yur cmpetitrs advisry (fr example, 1 student frm Mr. Rsenbaum s advisry will cmpete with 1 student frm Ms. Lucian s advisry.) 3. Have each pair take turns racing their ROBO wheels. 4. Track pints. (Fr example, if the student frm Mr. Rsenbaum s advisry wins the race against the student frm Ms. Lucian s- then Mr. Rsenbaum s grup gets the pint.) 9 P a g e
