2 INTAKE BASKET NETS Basket Nets are used during wildlife triage t transfer patients ut f crate r bx and int exam basket cvered by an Intake Basket net fr safety and security. Materials: Tulle (Jann's fabric) Swimsuit elastic (Amazn) Grsgrain ribbn (Amazn) r similar edging apprx. 1/12-2 inches. Safety pins and Sewing pins Instructins: 1. Cut Tulle: Measure basket and add 5" t length and width and cut tulle, square r rectangle. Pin tulle t ribbn apprx. 1/4 inch frm edge and sew, allwing fr a start and end t ribbn. This will be stitched up at end after the elastic is run thrugh.

3 2. Fld Ribbn: Fld ribbn ver tulle at midway pint and pin r irn in place. Again sew arund square t create a casing fr elastic. 3. Run Elastic: Next run elastic thrugh casing with safety pin. Yu can use a midway pint r a crner like the ne shwn.

4 4. Sew Crners: Sew up starting/finishing pint where the elastic fed thrugh 5. Final: Final net will lk like this

5 Pr Tip: Yu can use different clr ribbns fr different baskets. Small Hummingbirds baskets are baby blue, medium sized baskets were medium gray and larger basket cvers were dark gray. 6 SMALL MAMMAL POUCH Used fr wildlife patients, especially babies, t make them feel safe and minimize stress. The puch is enclsed n three sides, making a bag. It shuld take apprximately minutes t make! Materials: - Fabric Suggested fabrics: Flannel, cttn, fleece r ther tight-wven strng fabrics are all gd t use. We use these fabrics t avid catching tes during burrwing. - Ruler - Scissrs - Sewing Supplies (needle, thread and/r sewing machine) Instructins: 1. Cut Fabric: Cut tw equal-sized rectangles. The final puch will have the same width and half the length as the rectangles (minus seam allwances). Yu can make puches f ANY size, but an average puch will be 6-8" wide x 12-16" lng.

7 2. Fld Fabric: Fld the rectangles in half, right sides tgether. (Right side is the side yu eventually want t shw. Fr printed fabric, the patterned side is the right side.) The fld will be the bttm f the sack, and the ppsite pen end will be the tp-entry f the sack. 3. Sew Sides: Sew the sides tgether. Fr a strnger hld, sew small stitches and duble-back n the sides clsest t the fld. 4. Invert One Bag: Invert ne bag (desn't matter which) s it is right-side ut. Fr fabric withut a print, the seam is n the wrng side and hidden n the right side. 5. Stack the Bags: Stack the tw bags with right-sides tgether, s that seams are n the utside and inside f the new lined bag.

8 6. Sew Tp Edge: Sew the tp edge f the puches tgether, leaving a small pening. The pening needs t be big enugh t pull fabric thrugh -- a few inches is usually gd. 7. Pull Fabric Thrugh: Pull the fabric thrugh the pening left in the tp seam. Finish pulling the fabric thrugh the pening in the tp seam. At this pint, all the right sides are expsed (prints and n seams). 8. Hand Sew Opening Clsed: Hand-sew the last pening clsed. As this is the weakest pint in the bag, keep an eye n it ver time t make sure it desn't unravel.

10 GREY FOX HOOD Hds are used in wildlife rehab n higher stress patients during examinatin and treatment; they help t make animal feel mre secure when being handled. Ntes: All stitches are straight running stitches. Yu can back stitch fr strnger seams. Pattern can be mdified t increase r decrease size f nse hle. It is designed fr a grey fx. Materials: - 24 inches f ribbn 5/8 inch ribbed wrks well - 2 pieces f clrful fabric at least 10 by 10 Fabric shuld be plain cttn/ply blend. This stands up well t washing - 2 pieces f black fabric at least 10 by 10 - Sewing Supplies: thread, hand sewing needle, pins, sewing machine fr speed and strength - Other supplies: scissrs, Pst-It, irn 1. Fld fabric Fld yur clrful fabric s yu have tw layers. Pin the pattern t bth layers. Cut ut the pattern. Repeat with black fabric. Yu shuld end with 4 pieces f fabric.

11 2. Sew pattern Pin the clrful fabric tgether, s the bring sides are facing each ther n the inside. Starting 1.5 inches frm the tp, sew bth sides tp t bttm with 5/8 inch seam allwance and leaving the nse hle pen in the bttm. It will seem like the nse hle is t small, but it is nt. Repeat with the black fabric. Yu shuld end with tw identical sets f sewn fabric. 3. Sew pieces tgether Trim the edges f the seams fr the nse in bth pieces. Turn the black fabric inside ut s the seams are inside. Put the black sectin inside the clrful sectin, right sides tgether. Hand sew the fabrics tgether at the nse, 3/8 inch frm the raw edge f the fabric.

12 4. Flip fabric right side ut Trim the seam edges f the nse and turn the fabric right side ut. Tuck the black side int the clrful side. The nse will have finished seams and n seams will be tuching the animal s face. Hand stitch ¼ inch up frm the turned edge f the nse t hld the sides tgether arund the nse.

13 5. Prepare ribbn casing Where yu left the 1.5 inch space at the tp f the pattern, sew each raw edge t frm a finished seam. Turn the raw edges s that the finished side will be by the finished side. D nt sew them t each ther. This will frm the casing fr the ribbn. Yu will sew 8 small seams. 6. Sew ribbn casing 1.5 inches dwn frm the tp, sew straight arund the tp f the hd. Use a Pst-It t mark 1.5 inches frm yur needle t make it easier. Yu will be stitching the clrful fabric t the black fabric. Fld fabric ver ½ inch frm the tp and irn. Sew black t clrful at the tp ¼ inch frm irned edge. This frms the ribbn casing.

14 6. Sew ribbn casing Cut tw pieces f ribbn, abut 8-10 inches. Thread them thrugh the casing in ppsite directins, s yu have tw lps with tails in ppsite directins. 15 OWL HOOD Hds are used in wildlife rehab n higher stress patients during examinatin and treatment; they help t make animal feel mre secure when being handled. Warning: Yu can still be bitten thrugh this hd. It is intended fr calming and t make it harder fr an wl t aim t bite yu, but it des nt prtect yur fingers. Use cautin. Ntes: Pattern fits mst large wls. Pattern can be mdified t fit a smaller wl. Tp refers t the tp f the hd, thugh it may appear n the bttm in pictures Materials: 24 inches f ribbn 5/8 inch ribbed wrks well 2 pieces f clrful fabric at least 8 by 8 Plain cttn r cttn/ply blend wrks best fr this prject 2 pieces f black fabric at least 8 by 8 Sewing Supplies: thread, scissrs, pins, sewing machine fr speed and strength 1. Cut fabric Pin the pattern t a dubled-ver piece f fabric. Cut s yu have tw pieces f clrful fabric, and tw pieces f black fabric.

16 2. Sew fabric Use the template t measure 1.5 inches up frm the bttm n either side. Sew arund each piece f fabric n three sides. Trim the crners and tp. 3. Sew fabrics tgether

17 Turn the black fabric right side ut. Put it inside the clrful fabric s the finished sides are tgether. Sew the clrful fabric t the black fabric with ¼ inch seam allwance at the bttm f the hd.

18 4. Invert fabric Thrugh the 1.5 inch gap, turn the fabric s the unfinished sides are tgether.

19 5. Prepare ribbn casing Measuring 1 inch frm the bttm f the hd, sew arund the hd t frm the casing fr the ribbn. Yu can use a Pst-It t mark the distance frm the sewing machine needle.

20 6. Prepare ear feather prtectrs T frm the ear feather prtectrs, pinch the tp crner f the fabric with yur fingers. Sew abut ¾ in, t keep yur fingers ut frm under the needle. Repeat n the ther crner.

21 7. Prepare ear feather prtectrs Cut tw pieces f ribbn, abut 12 inches. Thread them thrugh the casing s that they frm tw ppsite facing lps. Tie the ends tgether. If yu have dne it crrectly, the hd shuld cinch clsed when ribbn is pulled. The ptinal easy ff additin is the lwer ribbn tabs. Cut tw 1.5 pieces f ribbn. Place them arund the edges f the ribbn tie pening. Zigzag stitch acrss the layers fr strength. Cngratulatins! Yu made a hd! Try it n an wl. Wrks with ther raptrs t. Tw wrenches needed t secure dr blt. - Tape measure - Pencil Assembly Suggestins: Read the instructins and identify all the parts. Dry fit them t ensure fit, having all the right parts. Sand ff any splinters t avid being stuck.

24 Nte 1: Cut extra smaller pieces fr use as spacers during Squirrel bx cnstructin. Nte 2: Panel designatin letters fr the 4' X 4' sheet are different frm the 4' X 8' sheet. 25 Instructins: 1. Squirrel Bx Assembly Frnt Panel A with Dr G Psitin Frnt Panel A with the length 10 1/2" ging frm left t right. In the lwer L/H crner place the 3" hle saw 1" in frm the L/H side & 1" up frm the bttm. Use a piece f scrap plywd under the panel t supprt the wd, prevent cutting in t the surface belw. Cut ut the pening. If n hle saw is available, draw a 3" circle with the L/H side 1" frm the edge, bttm f the circle 1" abve the bttm f the panel. Drill a 5/16" hle inside the circle t insert the saber saw blade t cut ut the circle.

26 1. Squirrel Bx Assembly Frnt Panel A with Dr G (Cntinued) With Dr Panel G wd grain ging left t right, use this diagram t cut and drill the hle fr the dr pivt blt. (See Dr Picture a Pg 6) On the L/H crner measure in 3/4" left and right, draw a diagnal line. On the R/H crner, measure in 7/8" left and right, draw a diagnal line. 27 Installing the Dr Place the Dr n the Frnt Panel cvering the 3" hle with 1/8" clearance n the L/H and bttm sides. Insert the 5/16 " blt int the hle in the Dr. Pressing dwn n the blt, rtate the Dr up and back t ensure bth angled crners d nt g beynd the edges f the Frnt Panel. Adjust the dr as needed. It may be necessary t rund the crners by sanding them. Ideally when the dr is all the way pen it will nt cver any f the pening. (See Dr Picture b) When the dr is psitined just right, use a hammer t tap the head f the blt t indent the Frnt Panel shwing where t drill the blt hle. Alternatively insert the drill bit int the Dr pivt hle, using it t pivt the Dr. When the right Dr psitin is fund drill the spt. Install blt thrugh Dr & Frnt Panel frm the utside in, ne washer under the blt head. On the inside place ne washer against the wd, lck washer next, then the nut. Tighten the nut until the dr mves with gentle pressure. (See Dr Picture c belw) Frnt Panel & Dr Pictures a. 1/8" gap arund Dr L/H & bttm side b. Ensure Dr clearance when rtated c. 28 2. Assembling the Squirrel Bx Frnt Panel with Dr will be inset 3/4" frm the edge f the fur side panels. T ensure pin/nails enter the frnt panel edges in the center fr best strength, drawing a light line 1 1/8" in frm ne end f all side panels is an ptin. Nails will g in n the line. Taking the Bttm Panel C, install the Back Panel Dr Stp D/E. Measure in 3/4" frm the end f the panel and draw a line. Place the Dr Stp flush with the line and centered n the panel. Nail in place. Inset 3/4" frm the end

29 2. Assembling the Squirrel Bx (Cntinued) Start with Bttm Panel C, placing the Frnt Panel with the Dr at the end. (Other assembly ptin is t nail all fur sides, tp and bttm panels tgether then insert the Frnt Panel. Test fit first t ensure the Frnt Panel will g in.) Tp & Bttm 12" wide Inset 3/4" n all fur sides Sides 10" wide Put ne f the Side Panels in place as shwn abve. Using the small Back Stp as a spacer guide r spacer pieces, ensure the Frnt Panel is inset 3/4" frm the end f the Side Panel. Spacer must be flush with the end f the panel at the tp and bttm. Nail the side panel in place. Repeat this step until all fur panels are nailed t the frnt panel. The Back Panel can be used t hld up the panel ends while nailing. Nail the edges f all panels tgether t create the bx. Nails shuld be 3/8" in alng the lng side edges.

30 3. Install the Back Panel Dr The Back Panel Dr is cut t have rughly a 1/8" clearance tp and bttm, 1/16 " n left and right sides t ensure ease f pening. With the 10 3/8' lng panel laid flat, mark the bttm center f the panel where the Blt Latch will g. End f the latch will be flush with the edge f the dr panel. Install the latch. Install the Pian Hinge centered n the Back Panel Dr first. Hinge pin will be psitined parallel alng the tp edge f the Dr. Rtate the Squirrel Bx until the back end is facing up. Put the Dr int psitin. Ensure the dr is centered left and right between the side panels. Mark the center f tw hinge screw hles at the left and right end. (Easier t match up tw hles then all f them and reduces chances f hinge shifting) Use the 1/16 th drill fr pilt hles t reduce the chance f splitting the plywd. Install the end screws. Ensure the dr mves freely. Drill the pilt hles fr the remaining screws and install them. Psitin the blt latch receiver n the plywd edge and slide the latch blt latch frward int the receiver. Drill pilt hles and install the tw retaining screws. Ensure the blt slides freely.

31 3. Install the Back Panel Dr (Cntinued) Finished Back Panel Dr 4. Install Frnt Dr Blt Latch Stand the Squirrel Bx up s the Frnt Dr is n tp. Maintaining an even gap arund the Frnt Dr, center the Blt Latch n the dr and install.

32 Psitin the blt latch receiver n the plywd edge and slide the latch blt latch frward int the receiver. Drill pilt hles and install the tw retaining screws. Ensure the blt slides freely. 5. Install the Squirrel Bx Carrying Handle Center the handle width and lengthwise n the tp panel and install. Handle will g with the grain lengthwise.
