BEFORE OPERATION - Ensure cases have been de-capped. Primer pckets shuld be clean and free f debris. - Run case necks thrugh a 21 st Century Shting expander die. We highly recmmend that yu use ur expander mandrel and die bdy, because the expander mandrel is machined t exactly match the diameter f the neck turning arbr. Utilizing a different expander may result in significant incnsistencies in case neck thickness after the turning peratin. - Ensure yu have prperly sized turning arbr (sld separately), case hlder, driver, and cutting tl. These cmpnents are cartridge specific. Using the wrng cmpnents can cmprmise the structural integrity f yur cases and result in case ruptures r wrse. Refer t the chart that came with the lathe r at the nline rdering page fr mre infrmatin. SETUP NOTE: The Neck Turning Lathe cmes pre-assembled with the cmpnents yu need fr yur neck turning peratin pre-installed. If yu have rdered additinal cutting tls, case hlders r drivers, fllw the instructins belw t set up yur Neck Turning Lathe t when yu are ready t turn a different cartridge. If yu are nly ging t turn the case necks fr ne kind f cartridge, r yur Neck Turning Lathe is already set up with the crrect cmpnents, skip t step V. See FIG 1. fr examples f these cmpnents. Reinsert Cutting Tl Assembly int tl bdy. Ensure the flat n the cutting tl hlder faces the Cutting Tl Assembly alignment screw n the frnt f the tl bdy (FIG. 5). 7. Retighten Cutting Tl Assembly alignment screw and antiblacklash set screw. PROPER CUTTING TOOL ALIGNMENT Cutting tl angles ut and away frm arbr as shwn. Flat part f cutting blade faces the frnt f the tl bdy. FIG. 5 NOTE: The anti-backlash set screw shuld be snug, but be careful nt t ver-tighten the alignment screw. When prperly installed, the actin f the adjustment dial shuld be tight but smth. III. REMOUNTING NECK TURNING TOOL BODY NOTE: The neck turning tl bdy is designed t be free flating with ample side-t-side play and shuld rtate freely. This allws it t self-align with the driver during peratin. 1. Slide the back f the arbr adapter int the hle n the munting bracket 2. Line up munting blt with hle n the side f the tl bdy and screw blt in. The munting blt shuld nt be excessively tight. P a g e 6
NOTE: Ensure prper placement f rubber flat washers while reinstalling tl bdy. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Overtightening the munting blt will defeat the tl bdy s ability t self-align with the driver, ptentially damaging and cmprmising case necks and shulders. IV. CASE HOLDER AND DRIVER DISSASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY NOTE: The driver is jinted and designed t be free flating with ample play. This allws it t self-align with the neck turning tl bdy during peratin. DRIVER ASSEMBLY Driver Rd Driver Ball Screw Driver Case Hlder Hexagnal Head fr drill chuck FIG Unscrew case hlder frm driver 2. Remve ball screw frm driver and slide driver ff f driver rd. 3. Assembly is the reverse f disassembly. NOTE: Sme drivers have an extra hle. This hle will accept a retaining screw used t hld a shrter driver rd (sld separately). D nt insert a set screw int this hle while using the stck driver rd as it will impede the freeflating capability f the driver. P a g e 7
V. INSTALLING THE TURNING ARBOR NOTE: BE CAREFUL NOT TO HIT THE CARBIDE CUTTING TOOL WITH THE TURNING ARBOR. The stainless steel turning arbr can chip the cutting tl if care is nt taken t avid cntact during installatin and peratin. TURNING ARBOR Arbr Stem FIG On the tl bdy, rtate the Cutting Depth Adjustment Dial cunter-clckwise t prvide enugh clearance fr the turning arbr. 2. With the flat n the arbr stem facing upwards, slide the turning arbr past the cutting tl and int the arbr adapter. If the arbr wn t slide int the adapter, unscrew the arbr lcking blt a few turns t ensure clearance inside the arbr adapter. 3. Tighten the arbr lcking blt a few turns, but d nt lck it dwn nt the arbr. The arbr shuld nly be able t rtate a few degrees within the adapter, and shuld slide in and ut easily. P a g e 8
CALIBRATION NOTE: The fllwing prcedures will allw yu t precisely calibrate yur Neck Turning Lathe and requires the use f a tube micrmeter (nt included). If yu d nt have a tube micrmeter, yu may skip step I, but understand that yu may have t make further cutting depth adjustments after calibratin and during yur turning peratin. Yu may then need t rerun any cases already turned prir t making the depth adjustment. I. SELECTING A CASE FOR CALIBRATION FIG Select five t six cases. Measure the neck thickness at fur t five lcatins arund the circumference f each case muth and recrd the minimum values fr each case. 2. Select the case that has the thinnest case neck based n the values yu measured in step 1. This will be the case yu use t calibrate the Neck Turning Lathe. Set the ther cases aside. NOTE: The intentin f this prcedure is t calibrate yur Neck Turning Lathe t cut at a depth that will cmpletely turn the lwest spts n yur cases. If this prcedure is nt dne prperly, yu will find sme cases with lw spts that will nt be cut, and yu may end up having t recalibrate yur tl r fire frm thse pieces f brass. See Operatin, pg. 14. P a g e 9
II. SET CUTTING LENGTH 1. Screw the length adjustment nut in cmpletely. 2. Unscrew the case hlder frm the driver a few turns and slide the case rim int the case hlder. Tighten the case hlder back dwn against the driver. 3. Place a small amunt f die wax (r equivalent) n the turning arbr. 4. Guide the case ver the turning arbr until the case muth cntacts the frnt f the arbr stem. 5. Rtate the Cutting Depth Adjustment Dial clckwise until the bttm edge f the cutting tl appraches the case neck. FIG Cut ut a thin strip f paper. Gripping it lightly between tw fingers, slide it between the case neck and the cutting tl. 7. Slwly turn the depth adjustment dial clckwise while mving the paper back and frth under the cutting tl. 8. If yu grip the paper gingerly, the cutting tl will lightly pinch the paper against the case neck, pulling it frm yur fingers as yu try t mve it. Stp rtating the depth adjustment dial and remve the strip f paper. The lathe shuld still turn freely. 9. Turn the length adjustment screw cunterclckwise and maintain slight frward pressure n the driver rd. 10. The case will slwly mve frward under the cutting tl. Cntinue t turn the length adjustment screw until the case shulder cntacts the angled edge f the cutting tl. 11. Secure the turning arbr by tightening the arbr lcking blt. P a g e 10
NOTE: Ensure the fllwing cnditins are present befre prceeding: 1. turning arbr is fully seated within the arbr adapter, 2. case muth is fully seated against the arbr stem 3. case shulder is resting against the cutting tl. If necessary, lsen the lcking blt and play the length adjustment screw in and ut until yu are certain that these cnditins are met. III. SET CUTTING DEPTH 1. Back the case muth t the rear edge f the cutting tl. 2. Using yur right hand, grab the case and slwly rtate it. 3. Using yur left hand, rtate the cutting depth adjustment dial clckwise until the cutting edge begins t cntact the case and yu feel resistance in the hand rtating the lathe (see FIG. 9). 4. Back the case neck fully ff f the turning arbr. ZEROING THE CUTTING TOOL FIG. 9 P a g e 11
IV. FINE TUNE CUTTING LENGTH AND DEPTH NOTE: The small indicatr lines n the cutting depth adjustment dial indicate a.0002 change in cutting depth. Cutting depth is increased by rtating the depth adjustment dial clckwise. NOTE: Increasing cutting length is perfrmed by turning the length adjustment screw cunter-clckwise. Cnversely, t shrten the cut length, rtate the length adjustment screw clckwise. 1. Chuck drill (300 rpm r less) ver end f driver rd. 2. Place a small amunt f lube n the utside f the case neck and alng the turning arbr. 3. Use the drill t turn the driver rd and guide the case muth ver the turning arbr. Slwly push the case int the cutting tl while running the drill. NOTE: The cutting tl will nly cut cases that are turning clckwise. Make sure the drill is set prperly when attempting t turn yur first case. D nt attempt t turn driver rd mre than 300 rpm. NOTE: Mediate insertin rate based n material remval. Advance the case frward under the cutting tl nly when the tl is n lnger remving material frm the case neck. DO NOT FORCE CASE INTO CUTTING TOOL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE CASE FORWARD WHEN THE LATHE IS NOT ROTATING. 4. Ensure case neck is seated fully ver the turning arbr and the case muth cntacts the arbr stem. 5. Once the turning peratin is cmplete, cntinue t rtate the drill and back the case ff f the arbr. P a g e 12
6. Visually inspect the case fr the fllwing qualities: i. Unifrm clr. Any remaining areas f darker xidized brass indicate lw pints r thin spts alng the case neck. Turn the adjustment dial clckwise ne t tw small indicatr lines and re-run the turning peratin t ensure cmplete unifrmity. ii. Case shulder cut length and cut terminatr. The cut terminatr shuld be smth and flush with uncut prtin f brass. The cut shuld reach abut.030 up the shulder. There shuld be n guge r visible lip n the case shulder at the end f the cut. A fingernail run ver the case shulder shuld nt catch n anything. If the cut is mre than.030 up the shulder r there is a guge r lip, lsen the turning arbr lcking blt and then rtate the length adjustment clckwise 1/16 th t 1/8 th f a revlutin. Retighten the arbr lcking blt, turn anther case and reevaluate. NECK TURNING RESULTS Cut extends crrect distance up case shulder (~.030 ) Sufficient cut length. Unifrm Clr sufficient cut depth Cut extends t far up case shulder Visible and tangible lip at cut terminatin 7. ANTI-BACKLASH FEATURE: The cutting tl assembly features an anti-backlash bushing that remves any play which wuld therwise be present frm the cutting tl assembly during peratin. This bushing is engaged by the anti-backlash set screw n the side f the cutting tl bdy just belw the dial. This feature is defeated when yu turn the dial cunter-clckwise (t P a g e 13
OPERATION decrease cutting depth), and can nly be reengaged by rtating the dial abut a full turn clckwise. If yu find that yur cut depth is t deep, yu wn t be able t adjust it back withut degrading the effectiveness f the anti-backlash bushing. T get arund this, make a nte f the reading n the dial. Rtate the dial cunter-clckwise ne full revlutin, and then back clckwise, standing ff the riginal cut depth dial reading by ne full number (majr indicatr line). Then, using the trial & errr methd, adjust the dial dwn until yu achieve the desired cut depth. - Ready t begin. With the Neck Turning Lathe prperly calibrated t the case with the smallest neck thickness, yu are ready t begin turning the rest f yur cases. - Cntinue t lubricate the turning arbr. Ensure that the turning arbr remains lubricated with die wax (r equivalent lubricant) during peratin. - Visually inspect each case after turning t ensure unifrmity. If any case necks have lw r thin spts as indicated by xidized spts f uncut brass, these flaws can be remediated by fire-frming. The cases will nt need t be turned again after they have been firefrmed. Alternatively, yu may increase the cut depth t fully turn these cases, but yu will als want t rerun any cases yu have already turned prir t making the cutting depth adjustment. - Quality Cntrl. When cnfigured prperly, the Neck Turning Tl is capable f yielding case neck thickness unifrmity within ±.0001 (r utside case neck diameter unifrmity within ±.0002 ). Fr best results, we recmmend using tube micrmeter t perfrm quality cntrl n yur cases during yur turning peratin. If significant variatins in case neck thickness are bserved, cnsult the trubleshting sectin belw. P a g e 14
PREVENTATIVE CARE AND MAINTENANCE Ensure driver rd has a medium t heavy cating f lubricant. Recmmended lubricants include any natural r synthetic grease. Ensure ball screw has a light cating f lubricant. Check cutting tl fr nicks r damage prir t peratin and replace if necessary Ensure that a light cating f die wax is present n the turning arbr during peratin. TROUBLESHOOTING Sme factrs that will negatively affect case neck unifrmity include: Turning primed cases (see BEFORE OPERATION pg. 3 fr mre inf). Nt using a 21 st Century Shting Expander Die and Mandrel (see BEFORE OPERATION pg. 3 fr mre inf). Using the wrng cmpnents (see BEFORE OPERATION pg. 3 fr mre inf). Wrn ut driver clutch -ring.
