2 R-G SOLAR FILM Technical & Safety Infrmatin Safety : Check the R-G slar film fr any pssible damage befre each use. If the film has been damaged please destry the film immediately. Avid any physical cntact with the R-G slar film itself as this may cause scratches r even wrse, cuts that destry the film. "Wrinkles" in the film are nrmal and will nt degrade the perfrmance. Please see belw in the "Cleaning & Inspectin" sectin. The filtering must be dne at the frnt f the lens r telescpe tube. D nt use the substrate at the eyepiece r viewfinder. Always secure the slar filter t the telescpe, binculars r camera. We recmmend using 2-4 Velcr strips t secure the filter in place. D nt leave the telescpe, binculars r camera unattended where children r inexperienced adults can pint the instruments at the sun withut the filter prperly attached. Keep the finder-scpe cvered if nt equipped with a slar filter. Pint the telescpe, binculars, r camera away frm the sun befre installing r remving the slar filter. D nt place yur filter up against a smaller telescpe. The end f the tube will damage the cating and film. Allw the instrument and filter t equalize t the utside temperature fr at least 15 minutes. Direct sunlight may warm the tube assembly f yur instrument enugh t cause internal heat currents that can degrade image quality. Cver the tube assembly with a light clred clth. If pssible, d nt view ver pavement r buildings. Viewing ver grass will help avid surface heat currents. Cleaning & Inspectin: As with any high quality cated ptic, clean cated surface nly if abslutely necessary. We recmmend using a cmpressed air blwer t remve any lse dust particles. If mre rigrus cleaning is required, we recmmend using antiseptic alchl (Isprpyl-rubbing alchl) and sft tissue wipes (fund in pharmacies). Light wipes in ne directin are recmmended. Use a new wipe fr each new directin. Pinhles and minr surface scratches are cmmn in slar filters; hwever, ur multi-cating technique keeps them t a minimum. A "bright" pinhle may cause "ghsting" due t scattered light. If this is seen during bservatin, the pinhle(s) shuld be blcked ut. Blcking ut any pinhles shuld be dne n the surface facing the telescpe. Hld the filter 1-2 feet in frnt f a standard 100 Watt "sft white" light bulb. Blcking can be dne using a thin black felt tip marker. 111ere is n danger if sme pinhles r minr scratches are present, and the tuch-up prcedure will nt lessen the ptical perfrmance. Ifmultiple large pinhles (5-10) are visible. we recmmend dispsing f the film. Strage: The filter and any extra R-G slar film shuld be stred in a manner as t avid dust r dirt cllectin n the filter itself. This will allw easy attachment and remval withut damaging the R-G slar film. Cnstructing uter Rim 1. Using thick cnstructin paper r thin plastic sheets, cut multiple lng strips. Fr telescpes and binculars cut the strips t 1 inch thick. Fr cameras, cut the strips t 0.5 inch thick. White paper/ sheets are recmmended in bth cases t prevent build up f heat 2. Wrap these strips arund yur telescpe, bincular r camera. Ensure that there is n bstructin n the instruments; therwise, reduce the strip width until there is n bstructin. Keep the strips slightly lse frm the tube t ensure easy remval and installatin f the filter. 4 Cnstructing a Slar Filter Using R-G Slar Film. Cnstructing Filter Hlder 1. Using the circle template supplied with the RG slar film, cut ut the inside diameter that is clse t the clear aperture f the instrument. Use the same kind f material as used in the manufacturing f the uter rim. 2. Next trace arund the uter rim and cut t make a ring as shwn in diagram 2 n the left. Repeat the steps abve t make anther identical filter ring. 3. Fr the larger Schmidt-Cassegrain and Newtnians telescpes, we recmmend manufacturing an ff axis filter. Use the same prcedure as in steps 1 and 2. Fr the clear aperture, use a size frm the circle template that clears the central bstructin and the end f the rin! previusly manufactured. (See Diagram 2) 4. Als check fr standard ff axis sizes used fr varius telescpes. Filter Attachment 1. Lay the R-G slar film dwn n a flat and clean surface. A clean flat piece f paper can be added nt the table t prevent any scratching. 2. Tape the filter dwn n the table. A small amunt f tensin is allwable t remve any majr wrinkles in the film; hwever, "wrinkles" are cmmn and will nt degrade the perfrmance f the film. 3. Using flat duble sided tape, place ne f the filter hlders nt the R-G slar film. Cut and trini the R-G slar film t size and attach the secnd filter hlder, n the ther side. 4. Next attach the filter assemble t the rim with glue and tape. Ensure the filter assembly is firmly in place. 5. Fr binculars, bth the bjective lenses must have a slar filter. Repeat prcedure abve t manufacture a secnd slar filter cell. 6. Check the finished slar filter cell fr light leaks and any pinhles in the R-G slar film itself. Blck any light leaks with additin tape and glue. 7. Yur slar filter is nw ready t be used n yur instrument. Secure the slar filter t the telescpe, binculars r camera using 2-4 Velcr strips.
