Frmatin Measurement The Hneywell Frmatin measurement prvides a wider perspective n paper frmatin than ever befre. The sensr is based n advanced illuminatin and image capture technlgy that allws a simultaneus measurement f multiple frmatin characters. These characters are independent f each ther and frm the basis fr an accurate and adaptable frmatin analysis prvided by the sensr. The frmatin sensr als adjusts autmatically t a wide range f speeds and prduct light transmissin prperties, and thus ensures reliable measurement results. All cntributing t imprved verall perfrmance. Descriptin The frmatin measurement is designed fr nline use in a hstile paper machine envirnment. A fast image capture allws machine speeds up t m/min withut any reductin in the analysis accuracy. The measurement autmatically adjusts the illuminatin fr varying basis weights. This enables a reliable sensr peratin up t 600 gsm sheet weights (depending n sheet light transmissin prperties). The intelligent algrithm remves the effect f uneven illuminatin, ambient light and dirt and dust build-up. The measurement prvides frmatin analysis based n characters derived frm the captured image. Each f these characters prvides an independent view f the frmatin. The measurement reprts trends and prfiles f all analyzed characters. Operating principle f the Experin MX Frmatin Measurement The frmatin measurement analyzes paper frmatin by capturing images frm a mving paper sheet. The image cntrl unit inside the unit cntrls bth the camera and the illuminatin fr best pssible image quality fr varying machine speeds and basis weights. The captured image is analyzed with a variety f algrithms, each prducing a numerical character that describes a cmpnent f frmatin. All these functins are carried ut inside the sensr unit. The characters and a set f images captured during a sensr scan are then available in the Experin MX system. The system displays the latest captured frmatin image fr peratr inspectin and stres an image representing the reel's average frmatin fr later study n a dedicated peratr display.

3 Experin MX Frmatin Measurement 3 Frmatin characters The Experin MX Frmatin Measurement is capable f utilizing a cmprehensive set f frmatin characters fr analysis, including variability, light and dark spts, MD flc size, CD flc size and MD/CD flc shape. Variability Variability f the image is the principal character explaining frmatin. A lw variability value indicates a gd ptical frmatin and a high variability indicates a pr frmatin. Spts The light-dark spts character defines the dminancy and intensity f light spts r dark spts in the captured image. If light spts are dminant, the character value is psitive; if there is a dminancy f dark spts, the value is negative. The intensity is shwn as an abslute value f the character.
