The successful use f archery skills by primitive peple literally meant survival fr them by prviding fd. Skilled archers thrugh the ages were able t win battles, and that changed the curse f histry fr many natins. In cntemprary sciety, target archery is cnsidered a challenging sprt fr the cmpetitr wh places value n the pursuit f excellence. Target archery was adpted int the Olympics in The ldest turnament n recrd is the Ancient Scrtn Silver Arrw Cntest in Yrkshire, held every year since 1673, excluding the 2 Wrld Wars. The Natinal Archery Assciatin (NAA) is the gverning bdy f target archery, funded in The Natinal Field Archery Assciatin (NFAA) was established in 1936, sets rules and regulatins gverning field archery cmpetitin. Safety Rules and Precautins 1. D nt tuch any equipment unless tld t d s by the instructr. 2. Never use inferir equipment (i.e. split arrws, frayed strings, etc.). 3. D nt draw and release a bw string withut an arrw. (Dry fire) 4. D nt wear jewelry/wear simple clthing. 5. Keep the bw arm elbw turned ut t avid string slap. 6. Never run with equipment; when carrying arrws, keep the pile ends tward the grund 7. Never nck an arrw if smene is in frnt f yu. Nck arrws nly when given the cmmand t d s by the teacher. 8. NO HORSEPLAY! 9. Retrieve arrws ONLY when given the cmmand t d s by the teacher. Never crss the shting line while thers are shting (wait fr cmmand). 10. Shting: 11 Basic Steps *The steps described are fr the right-handed persn; adjustments will need t be made fr a left-hander. 1. STANCE Place ne ft n each side f the shting line. Find a cmfrtable balanced stance with yur feet shulder width apart. Stand straight and tall, with yur head up and yur shulders dwn and relaxed. 2. NOCK Place the arrw n the arrw rest, hlding the arrw clse t the nck. Keep the index (dd clred) fletching pinting away frm the bw. Snap the nck f the arrw nt the bwstring under the nck lcatr.

2 3. SET DRAW HAND Set the grve f yur first three fingers arund the bwstring creating a hk. Keep the back f yur drawing hand relaxed. 4. SET BOW HAND Set yur bw hand n the grip using nly the web and the meaty part f yur thumb. Yur bw hand shuld stay relaxed thrughut the entire sht. 5. PRE-DRAW Raise yur bw arm twards the target, while keeping yur shulder dwn. Lk at the target thrugh the sight ring, and line up the bwstring with the center f the bw. Rtate yur bw arm elbw under. The elbw f yur drawing arm shuld be near the level f yur nse. 6. DRAW Draw the bw back by rtating yur draw arm shulder arund until yur elbw is directly behind the arrw. Cntinue lking at the target and keep the string lined up with the center f the bw as yu draw. Maintain a cntinuus drawing mtin thrughut the sht. 7. ANCHOR Draw the string t the frnt f yur chin, placing the knuckle f yur index finger directly under the side f yur jaw*. The string and string hand shuld be felt firmly against yur jaw bne. Lightly tuch the string t the center f yur nse. Cntinue t draw the bw smthly, withut stpping. * Beginners shuld anchr with yur first finger at the crner f yur smile. 8. AIM Fcus yur eyes and yur cncentratin n the center f the target. Keep the string lined up with the center f the bw. Cntinue yur smth gradual draw. 9. SHOT SET-UP After reaching the anchr pint and begun yur sight alignment, create a slight mvement frm yur drawing shulder and arm t the rear. Yu can release anytime during this prcess. 10. RELEASE Simply release the tensin in yur fingers and drawing hand, all at nce, while yu cntinue the drawing mtin withut stpping. Cntinue extending the bw arm twards the target as yu release. Cntinue fcusing n the target. 11. FOLLOW-THROUGH Yur drawing hand cntinues back beside the neck with fingers relaxed, ending up near the shulder. Bw arm cntinues extensin twards the target fr a recurve. Cntinue fcusing n the target. Maintain yur fllw-thrugh until the arrw hits the target.
