1 CHESS RULES

2 HIGHLIGHTS Frfeit time is five (5) minutes after the scheduled game start time. If the player r team is nt Ready t Play within five (5) minutes after the scheduled game start time, then that player r team will frfeit and the ppsing player r team will be declared the winner (assuming the ppsing player r team is ready t play). All matches will be cnducted using a timed frmat. Each player will have sixty (60) minutes f aggregate mve time n the chess clck. One match will be ne hundred twenty (120) minutes in length. All players will play three (3) matches during the preliminary runds in a mdified- Swiss system. All pairings and draws in the preliminary phase will be pre-designated. Chess will be an pen turnament with participants f bth genders and f varius ages. Matches will be gverned by the Laws f Chess, as set frth by the Wrld Chess Federatin. The chess equipment used shall be the same fr all games played In rder t ensure equality in clr assignments, clr designatins will be made alng with the turnament draw by the USIG Turnament Cmmittee. Players are expected t be familiar with legal mves. Players shuld be aware f legal maneuvers such as en passant, prmtin and castling. Detailed descriptins f these are utlined in Laws f Chess. 3 TOURNAMENT RULES READY TO PLAY Frfeit time is five (5) minutes after the scheduled game start time. If a team is nt Ready t Play within five (5) minutes after the scheduled game start time, then that team will frfeit and the ppsing team will be declared the winner (assuming the ppsing team is ready t play). JERSEYS AND APPARREL All players participating must wear the unifrms prvided by the USIG during check-in. If a player is nt wearing the unifrm prvided, that player will nt be allwed t play unless they have received a waiver frm the USIG Natinal Sprts team. Players are nt allwed t alter the unifrms that are prvided by the USIG. If a player is nt wearing the prper attire, they will nt be allwed t play. It will be at the umpire s discretin t determine whether a player can rejin play after the player has crrected their attire UMPIRE S JUDGMENT An umpire's judgment shuld nt be cntested. Failure t adhere t an umpire's judgment may warrant ejectin. The umpire's decisins are final and n appeals f the decisin will be allwed. Only rule clarificatins may be requested fllwing the issue in questin by Team Captain and it is up t the umpire s discretin t cnsult the rulebk WEATHER, DELAYS AND SCHEDULING If there are unscheduled delays r weather related delays, the USIG Natinal team has the right t adjust the schedule, rules, length f the game r any ther game cnditins fr scheduling purpses CHESS 3

4 OFFICIAL RULES TOURNAMENT FORMAT PRELIMINARY PHASE Matches will be alltted a ttal f ne hundred twenty (120) minutes f ttal match play with each player receiving sixty (60) minutes f aggregate mve time. Pints will be accrued by each player during the preliminary phase as fllws: One (1) pint will be awarded fr each win, r frfeit win Half (1/2) a pint will be awarded t a player fr a draw, n result, r match nt played Zer (0) pints will be awarded t a player fr a lss r a frfeit lss. Each player will play three (3) runds f chess during the preliminary phase. The draw fr all three (3) runds will be pre-selected by the turnament fficials. In rder t ensure equality in clr assignments, clr designatins will be made alng with the turnament draw by the turnament fficials. During the preliminary phase each player will play n mre than tw (2) runds with a single clr designatin. SEEDING TIE BREAK The Buchlz system (described belw) fr rankings will be in effect (cmmnly referred t in ther sprts as strength f schedule). When tw r mre players are tied with the identical number f accrued pints frm the preliminary rund, the sum f all ppnents accrued pints frm the preliminary rund will be calculated t create a summed scre fr each tied player. This summed scre will be used as the tiebreak fr seeding purpses. The player with the highest summed scre will be seeded higher. In the event that the summed scres are als identical, seeds will be assigned by lt r randm draw. TOURNAMENT FORMAT PLAYOFFS The tss f cin will determine the clr designatin befre the start f each game. These clr designatins WILL NOT be pre-determined. CHESS 4

5 If a match ends in a draw, a tie-break game will be played t determine a winner as fllws: A cin tss will determine the clr designatins. White will be alltted six (6) additinal minutes f aggregate mve time and black will be alltted five (5) minutes f aggregate mve time t determine a winner. If the match is still a draw, then black will be declared winner and will advance in the playffs f the turnament. THE CHESS CLOCK A flag fall r expiratin f alltted time fr a player will result in a win fr the ppnent. A player must stp his clck with the same hand as that with which he made his mve. It is frbidden fr a player t keep his finger n the buttn r t hver ver it. METHOD OF SCORING The game is wn by the player wh has checkmated the ppnent s king. The game is wn by the player whse ppnent declares he resigns. The game is wn by the player whse ppnent s chess clck expires. The win is nly given if the player with time remaining has enugh material t checkmate. The game is drawn when the player t mve has n legal mve and his king is nt in check. The game is said t end in stalemate. The game is drawn when a psitin has arisen in which neither player can checkmate the ppnent s king with any series f legal mves. The game is said t end in a dead psitin. The game is drawn upn agreement between the tw players during the game. PLAYER CONDUCT The players shall take n actin that will bring the game f chess int disrepute. Spectatrs must be seated. Players wh have finished their games shall be cnsidered t be spectatrs. It is frbidden t distract r anny the ppnent in any manner whatsever. This includes unreasnable claims r unreasnable ffers f a draw. The arbiter will enfrce the Laws f Chess. This includes reslving disputes and enfrcing penalties which may include: Warning CHESS 5
