1 Welcme t the Digital Humanities Venice Fall Schl!! Greetings frm the Ca Fscari University f Venice and l Ecle Plytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne! With this letter we hpe t prvide yu with useful infrmatin fr planning yur trip and getting settled in nce yu are here. Will there be an Orientatin event? Yes! There will be a shrt Orientatin at 7pm n Sunday Octber 5th at the Residenza Ai Crciferi, fllwed by a buffet dinner n-site. T get t the residence please see the attached map. When shuld I arrive? Students checking in t accmmdatin shuld arrive n Sunday, Octber 5 th, by 6pm at the latest (check in is frm 3pm). All ther students shuld aim t arrive in Venice in time fr Orientatin. Check ut is by 11am n Saturday 11 th, unless yu have requested t check ut n Friday 10 th in which case yu will check ut befre classes start. Where is the rganized accmmdatin? The residence Residenza ai Crciferi (Camp dei Gesuiti, Cannaregi 4876, Venezia) is lcated at the nrth pint f Venice, near the Fndamenta Nuve bat stp. Yu will be staying in duble rms, and breakfast is included at the café n-site. It als huses the fllwing facilities: Cmputer rm accessible t all students staying at the Residence Shared kitchen Study rms Wifi in the cmmn areas; LAN access in the rms 2 laundry rms with washing machines, driers and irns

At the residence all staff speak English s please d nt hesitate t ask them any questins! Hw is the Prgramme rganized? We will be hlding seminars by guest lecturers in the mrnings, and site visits will take place in the afternn n Mnday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Frm Thursday mid-mrning yu will have the pprtunity t wrk in grups n labs and n Friday afternn yu will present the prject yu have been wrking n. The schedule is available n the website, but please nte that it is subject t change. Where will classes be held? Classes are t be held in Sala Drig in the main Ca Fscari University ffice building, lcated n the magnificent Grand Canal. Once yu arrive at Ca Fscari there will be signs shwing yu t the classrm. Will I be able t access the University Ca Fscari library? At Orientatin yu will be given a library access card in rder t gain entrance int the tw main University libraries, the Ca Fscari Zattere Cultural Flw Zne (CFZ) and the Bibliteca di Area Umanistica (BAUM) where yu can access the cmputers and use them t print (fr which yu will need t tp up with credit). Fr us t prvide yu with the access card please fill ut the attached persnal details frm and send it back t us n later than Wednesday September 24 th. What abut Wifi? Ca Fscari is cnnected t the Eduram netwrk. Therefre, shuld yu already have an Eduram accunt yu will be able t access the Ca Fscari Wifi easily with the credentials frm yur hme University. If yu *d nt* already have an Eduram accunt please fill ut the sectin dedicated t Wifi access in the persnal details frm attached. We will then hand ut yur Wifi username and passwrd during Orientatin. The Ca Fscari Wifi netwrk is fully accessible in the classrm, and in the libraries, as well as in the University grunds (fr example, the main Summer Schl ffice and the Ca Fscari curtyard). Yu can als use the Wifi netwrk f the city f Venice: VeniceCnnected with yur Ca Fscari University credentials; the access pints are spread thrughut Venice. Once yu are cnnected t this Wi-fi netwrk, yu can pen yur brwser and a screen will pp up that asks fr yur username and passwrd.

3 Hw can I get arund Venice? The prgramme will prvide all students staying at the residence with a ne week vaprett water bat pass, which will be handed ut at Orientatin. What d I need t bring with me fr the Prgramme? A wrking laptp that yu are familiar with is essential! Yu culd als bring yur tablets and smartphnes, but these will nt suffice alne. Yu shuld als be prepared t take ntes and bring with yu yur ideas and research interests that yu can incrprate int yur prjects if yu wish. There may be sme slides and readings required fr preparatin f the seminars, r as fllw up, which will be available sn n the blg (details t cme), r will be prvided by the lecturers as needed. Where is the Help Desk lcated? The Ca Fscari Summer Schl ffice is lcated nt far frm the Zattere, just arund frm San Basili. 4 INSTRUCTIONS fr getting t the Residence / Orientatin Frm Airprt BY TAXI (bat): is the fastest way t get t Venice and will take yu directly t yur Residence. It is als the mst cstly f the services, arund BY TAXI (car): It takes abut 15 minutes in a Taxi t get frm the airprt t Piazzale Rma and will cst arund 50. Frm Piazzale Rma yu can walk r take public transprt (vaprett) see belw. BY BUS: There are tw different buses yu can take which will take yu t Piazzale Rma in arund 20 minutes, bth f which cst 6. The private bus is by far the mst cmfrtable and is guaranteed t nly take 20 minutes, but it ges every half hur, rather than every 15 minutes r s. -The lcal public bus cmpany ACTV (range bus) number 5 -The private express bus cmpany ATVO (blue bus) Bth f these buses leave frm the bus lane in frnt f the main entrance/exit f the airprt. Frm Piazzale Rma yu can walk r take public transprt (vaprett) see belw. Frm Piazzale Rma Having arrived at Piazzale Rma yu can either walk t the Residence, which will take yu arund 30 minutes, r yu can take ne f a number f bats that will take yu nearby, specifically, t the vaprett stps Fndamenta Nuve, r Ca d Or : Number 5.2 Fndamenta Nuve, taking 26 minutes Number 4.2 Fndamenta Nuve, taking 29 minutes Number 1 Ca d Or, taking 13 minutes. Frm the train statin (Ferrvia) The train statin is ne stp after Piazzale Rma and s yu can get the exact same vaprett lines as abve, which arrive 3 minutes later. The 5.2 and 1 lines run until arund midnight, and the 4.2 until abut 9pm. After midnight the N runs every hur thrugh the grand canal (yu get ff at Ca d Or).

Getting t the Residence frm Fndamenta Nuve Frm Fndamenta Nuve, frm the stp labeled A, immediately t yur right yu shuld see a wide street ging straight ahead, called Salita Specchieri.

On yur left yu will see the large residence structure and the dr t receptin. Getting t the Residence frm Ca d Or Frm Ca d Or walk straight dwn the small narrw street immediately in frnt f the bat stp.

5 Getting t the Residence frm Fndamenta Nuve Frm Fndamenta Nuve, frm the stp labeled A, immediately t yur right yu shuld see a wide street ging straight ahead, called Salita Specchieri. If yur bat happened t stp at a different stp, make yur way t A. Take Salita Specchieri and walk twards the large pen square called Camp dei Gesuiti. On yur left yu will see the large residence structure and the dr t receptin. Getting t the Residence frm Ca d Or Frm Ca d Or walk straight dwn the small narrw street immediately in frnt f the bat stp. Yu will cme ut int Strada Nuva. Turn right and carry n dwn this wide (and busy) street until yu reach the end where yu will see the square called Camp Santi Apstli. At the beginning f the square turn left past the restaurant (with tables utside) and then take the next right. Turn left again and carry n straight up twards Fndamenta Nuve. Yu will g acrss tw bridges befre yu arrive at the large pen square called Camp dei Gesuiti. On yur right yu will see the large residence structure and the dr t receptin.

At the first bridge turn right (d nt g ver it) and take the secnd bridge yu see n the canal (n yur left).

6 Getting t the University classrms (San Basili) frm the Residence The fastest way t take a bat t the classrm is frm Ca d Or (see abve map). Frm there yu take the number 1 t San Tmà (13 mins). Frm San Tmà yu take the nly street yu see exiting the vaprett stp, and then turn left. At the first bridge turn right (d nt g ver it) and take the secnd bridge yu see n the canal (n yur left). Yu will g thrugh a small street and when yu cme ut at the intersectin (in frnt f restaurant tables) keep ging straight and g ver the wide bridge in frnt f yu. Immediately n the left will be Università Ca Fscari. Frm there yu will need t fllw the signs t the classrm: Sala Drig.
