1 Silver City Quilt Guild New November 2017 Please note: This month s meeting is at The Mitchell Club 29 Elm St Middleboro. St. Andrews needed their hall and bumped us this month Hello, Silver City Quilters! I hope you're enjoying the fine weather we've been having. Winter will be here before we know it but that means great quilting weather. I've been trying to organize my quilting projects and, Wow!, I have a lot to do. It was fun finding projects I forgot I had, and eye-opening finding projects I questioned "Why?". I bet I'm not alone when I say I have enough to last my lifetime. But I love fabric and just can't help it! I'm looking forward to seeing you all again and enjoying another fun evening with our great Guild! Happy Quilting! 2 Quilt guild Comfort Quilt News Our charity so on Saturday, October 21 was a huge success. (Thank you to everyone who came.) There were people sewing, ironing and cutting all to help make wheelchair quilts and walker bags for the nursing home. We will still need to have wheelchair quilts quilted and then the binding put on so if anyone can help out we will have those available at the November meeting. One thing that was really great at the Sewcial was having a binding tutorial and help from our experienced quilters on pressing techniques and seaming. Our next Sit &Sew social is November 25th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I don't know about you but I'll be ready to take a break and sew with friends that day. 6 Max Verga our November speaker At age three, Max Verga was taught how to hand sew by his grandmother, a former milliner. He recalls as a child asking to be given scraps of fabric that he would then put together as a possible foreshadowing of quilts to come. He acquired his first sewing machine with the earnings from a summer job and used it make clothing for himself and later several customers, mainly plus sized women. He studied interior design at the New York School of Interior Design and while later working for the City of New York took courses in stained glass design and construction while continuing to create with fabric. Some of those creations included costumes worn at frequent trips to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. It would not be long, though, before working with fabric overtook working with stained glass. Shortly after moving from Brooklyn, New York to Middleboro, Massachusetts and taking his one and only formal quilting class, Max came to realize that he did not like to work with standard quilting patterns. He also came to realize that for years he had been creating what are known as art quilts, using techniques that he had picked up on his own and which he still continues to rely on to create non-traditional quilts that are oneof-a-kind pieces that often go against the current trends. Rather than piecing his quilts, Max generally fussy cuts bold prints and appliques sections together using satin stitching that acts as the actual quilting holding the fabric onto the batting. Additional satin or decorative stitching is sometimes used to enhance the design, as are various kinds of embellishments such as beads and sequins. The use of the satin stitch to define areas within the quilt is most likely the natural outgrowth of having made stained glass windows right before turning to quilting as a hobby. Like many of his stained glass projects, the quilts generally incorporate the bold use of color. Many of the quilts are quite large. A number of the quilts have been used as part of the stage sets that Max has designed for various productions in the town of Middleboro. Two quilts have won awards at shows sponsored by a local sewing machine company. Max has also created a series of kimonos and frequently incorporates Asian themes into his quilts. He feels that he, like everyone who creates something from almost nothing, channels many resources within themselves to produce a final work. As an active member of the Oak Point Country Piecemaker s Quilt Guild and Oak Point Art Association, Max continues to try to meld the craft of quilting with the artist s eye to allow himself and others to view quilts as something more than just items to keep us

7 warm in winter. Whether on our beds, our laps, or our walls, Max would like us to view quilts as individual pieces of art, reflecting the soul of the individual who created those works.
