THE QUARTER INCH PRESS February 2017 WWW. NORTHPARISHQUILTERS. WORDPRESS. COM North Parish Quilters, Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading, MA We meet on the second Wednesday of the month Sept- June. Doors open at 6pm & the meeting starts at 7pm. North Parish Quilters President s Note February 2017 Hello Fellow Quilters, The annual January charity meeting was a huge success. A great big thanks goes to Pat Winter and Jean Osborn who chaired the meeting. More than forty people were present and numerous items were made and there was significant progress on quilts for the Hole in the Wall Camp. Quilts were sandwiched and pin basted, bindings stitched, blocks made, blocks assembles into quilts, pillow cases and hats were also made. It was close to three hours of industrious sewing, all for charity. The turnout fills me with warmth and pride at how generous our members are with their time and talents. If you were not able to make the January meeting, there are still projects and kits for you to pick up from the charities, so it is not too late to still take part in the guild's charity work. Susan Holsing President SNOW CANCELLATION POLICY: If North Reading Schools are canceled on the day of a North Parish Guild Meeting, then the guild meeting is also canceled. However, if snow conditions become severe through the day, members will be notified by by 3:00 pm on the day of the meeting. We ask that everyone assist with notifying our members of a cancellation. Members without should contact another North Parish Guild Member. Thank you. 1

We are still looking for individuals to step forward for Vice President assist the President in a variety of ways. Learn the ropes so that you can assume the post of President for the year. If you are interested, please speak with Susan Holsing, Pat Atkins, or any other board. Hole in the Wall Charity Update On a wonderful Wednesday night in January, NPQ guild members came together for Charity. Snowball & string quilt blocks were made, quilt tops & pillowcases were completed, borders & binding were sewn and quilts were pinned. In June when the completed quilts and pillowcases are delivered to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the children who are the lucky recipients will be forever grateful for all of your efforts on this special night and all year long. 2
Now don t forget to stop by the Hole in the Wall Gang table for more kits some blocks, rows, tops, binding, quilting, etc. Something for everyone depending on your time and interest. Also, please return kits as soon as possible so the process to completion can continue. It takes many hands to do the many steps and all help is greatly appreciated. Happy Valentine s Day, Marcia debrigard, Pat Winter & Jean Osborn Animal Shelter Pillow Guidelines Since I am currently not able to do cutting it would be a great help if you cut your scraps into 2 pieces, including the batting. Long strips must also be cut because they ball up when laundered. If you want to make your own pillow bags the Cat pillows are 14 square and the Dog pillows are 14 square up to Fat Quarter size. I will also have bags ready to be filled at each meeting. I will take any unwanted fabric including cotton, poly and decorator fabric and use it to sew bags. I can also use old towels. I will deliver all of the completed pillows to the shelter. I am very grateful for the guild s response as the need is great. Also, reusing and recycling our scraps is good for the environment. Thank you, Janice Caporrella Yawkey Family Inn News Hello North Parish Members, Please consider making even one pillowcase for the next meeting and bring it to the February meeting. If you have any cheater panels, or small quilts you might have made and no longer want, someone will be happy to finish it and/or make it larger and turn it into a comfort quilt. I will continue to have kits available to take home at each meeting. There are bindings to be sewn on (machine is just fine) and machine quilting to be done. If you need batting for a quilt, call me prior to the meeting and I will bring the batting for your quilt. For those of you that already have quilts to work on, I will be accepting anything that is completed at the February meeting. Remember, Yawkey Family Inn will take quilts any size from 24 square up to king. They support babies from 3 months up to 18 years and also support families who meet their standards of poverty level in their country, which in many cases, are lower than ours. Your donations are very much appreciated, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at Sincerest thanks, RoseMary 3
Program for February 2017 At our February meeting we will welcome Maureen Blanchard of Cobblestone Quilts in Townsend, MA. Maureen will be our lecturer as well as our vendor for the evening, so please don t forget your checkbooks!! She will be presenting us with a Beauty or Beast collection (trunk show) of quilts for discussion. Her website declares It s all in how you look at it! Explore the vibrant and beautiful quilts made from the beastiest of fabrics! You know the old saying: One man s junk is another man s treasure I can t wait to see what she will be bringing us! If you have a beast of a quilt, to share, please bring it along. Fat Quarter Raffle The Fat quarter Raffle is a fun way to build up your stash. It is simple and easy. You do not even have to go to the store to buy a fat quarter. You can make your own from left overs or from your stash. For each fat quarter you bring in, you will receive one ticket (a maximum of 3 tickets per person). If your number is drawn, you receive all the fat quarters that were brought in that month. February s Fat Quarter Raffle theme is Pinks or Reds. Month February March April May June Theme Pinks or Reds Juvenile Batiks Food Stars or Stripes How to make a Fat Quarter: A Fat Quarter measures 18 x 21 (approximately). Since a fat quarter is 18 wide, you can use a ½ yard of fabric from your yardage. Typical fabric width is wide. Cut the width of your fabric in half. So, your ½ yard of fabric will yield two fat quarters. Please use good quality fabrics. 4
Mystery Quilt I'll be giving out the final clue #7 this month. Bet you can't wait The "Caped Crusader" Quilt Show Update As you all know, a Quilt Show was being planned as our fundraiser. However, those plans have been changed, due to the difficulty in securing a venue of the proper size location and price. The Board met on Wednesday January 25th to discuss options. At the Board Meeting it was decided to change the theme of the fundraiser. The Theme will be Take it "To Go"!! We will offer items for sale and auction that can be used for taking things "to go". To go to the beach, to go on a quilt retreat, to go out to a pot luck dinner, to go to work, etc. There will be tables of items directly for sale, and also a small auction of special items such as ruler bags, beach bags, and children's sleep over items. Around the perimeter of the room there will be a display of smaller wall hanging to lap size quilts. And, what is a quilt event raffle baskets! We have also changed the date to the November 2017 meeting, which is Wednesday November 8th. It will be just in time to start off the Christmas Shopping season. More information will be coming at the February Meeting. 5
