2018 FOLK ART with JO SONJA JANSEN MDA, VGM SEMINARS The culmination of our year of planning is the presentation of the schedule for the new year. Most of our classes are held at our studio in Eureka, a small coastal community centered amongst the towering redwoods of Northern California. We also have two classes in Boise, ID in September For Eureka classes, we provide transportation to and from the airport. Several hotels and a variety of restaurants are located nearby. You will be responsible for making your own hotel reservations. Upon acceptance, you will be sent a seminar packet that will include a list of motels, rates, phone numbers, etc. If you wish to take more than one class, a $ deposit is required for each FIRST choice class requested. Seminars fill quickly, so please list a second or third choice if possible. All class openings will be filled on a first come, first served basis. If your chosen selections are full, we will place you on the waiting list and send your entire deposit back to you. Once accepted, seminar deposit(s) are non-refundable. This policy is to be fair to everyone who wants to take the class. Late cancellations prevent others from being able to take the class. The balance of your fee will be due two months prior to your class date. We realize how important certain classes and dates can be to you. If this is the case, please send in your application as quickly as you can. If you are on the waiting list, don t be discouraged as cancellations do occur. The nearest airport is the Eureka/Arcata airport. The airport is located 13 miles north of our studio. United Airlines has service to Eureka. United offers flights 3-4 times daily through San Francisco. If you would like to be picked up at the airport, we will arrange for Door to Door airport shuttle service to pick you up and take you to your hotel. We will also arrange for them to take you back to the airport for your departing flights. When your flight arrives, just tell them your name and that you are with Jo Sonja s and you are on your way! Lastly, from all of us here, we appreciate the interest you have shown in our seminar program. Thank you for your suggestions and your support- we hope to see you in 2018! DESIGN & COLOR Class Dates February 5-9 (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: All paints and mediums used during instruction. We begin our 2018 seminar year with a Design and Color class. A unique experience during which we explore some of the many different aspects of creativity and the actual development of a design. As we have always done, the piece or pieces are not included in the class fee and each artist is welcome to bring a piece or two of your own choosing. There will be exercises and times of sharing and encouragement that, hopefully, will stimulate your creative juices. All Images - Copyright 2017 Jo Sonja Jansen
TRANSFORMATIONS Class Dates February (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Patterns, instructions, all paints and mediums used during instruction. Class DOES NOT Include: Tea pots, coffee pot sets. We want you to bring your own shapes as we work together to transform and create our own unique Transformations! The essence of folk art is the decoration and transformation of everyday items to brighten the home. Strokes, bright colours and distinctive patterns are all used to create our own unique decorative works of art. The pieces shown here are an example of the types of transformations we will be working on during this fun week together. 3 PETER AND THE WOLF Class Date March (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Wooden desk box, patterns and instructions, all paints and mediums used in class. We re finally able to offer this class again as the desk box is being beautifully reproduced. The painting style is a contemporary continuation of an old style known as Hudson River Valley style and the works of Edward Hicks. Although many people may identify the Hudson River Valley style with canvas painting, a few furniture pieces were also decorated with this painting style, especially Eastlake furniture. This painting is of the story and musical narrative by Sergei Prokofiev. Written April 1936, the story is an introduction to the orchestra for children, but continues to delight all of us. The desk box is approximately 17 wide, 12 tall and 11 deep. All Images - Copyright 2001 Jo Sonja Jansen
MARDI GRAS Class Date Oct (Monday - Friday) This class will be repeated in early Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Bombay Box, patterns and instructions, all paints and mediums used in class. Larry Pickett is once again making one of his beautiful, signature bombay boxes for our classes in these classes are slightly more expensive but the end result is an heirloom piece. This year we invite you take a step outside the box and embrace whimsical inspiration drawn from the bright, colorful traditions of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The painting on this Bombay box is still in the stages of being finished and we ll be sending out additional photos of the top and the other sides as it progresses. The Bombay style box is approximately 11 tall, 17 wide and 13 deep. All Images - Copyright 2017Jo Sonja Jansen Please note: This is work in progress photograph. There is a lid and two other sides that will feature design work. We will share additional photographs as soon as we can.
CHIPPENDALE CLOCK The Peacock Fountain Class Date April 30 - May 4 (Monday - Friday) October (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Alder clock and shelf. All patterns and instructions, paints and mediums used in class. This beautiful clock and shelf were first brought to us from Japan by Sayumi Oka. We were able to have them beautifully reproduced in alder for this class. Victorian Chippendale Techniques provided the inspiration to paint this clock. This small naval scene idea came from old English dial or clock face painting. It is a nice surprise in the floral garden scene on this stunning clock. Wooden clock is approximately 21 tall, 11 wide and 5 tall. Wooden shelf (included) is about 7.5 tall. Please note: Clock works are NOT provided as there are many choices available and personal preferences vary. We will provide recommendations for sources that you can contact to obtain one for your piece. All Images - Copyright 2017 Jo Sonja Jansen
ROSEMALING VEST AGDER WEDDING PLATE Class Date June 4-8 (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Chip carved wood bowl, patterns and instructions, all paints and mediums used in class. By popular request we are doing this beautiful chip carved shallow bowl decorated with Jo Sonja s variation of a wedding procession in Vest Agder style. At the southern tip of Norway is the area or county known as Vest Agder (West Agder). The folk art of this area is based on floral baroque. With straighter scrolls, almost like palm trees, ending in a profusion of flowers, leaves, and small teardrops or comma strokes. This is an area where we can see many examples of the wedding party painted around the outer edge of the inside of the bowl. A few drunks were usually in attendance as the wedding party progressed. Chip carved shallow bowl is 20 in diameter. All Images - Copyright 2001 Jo Sonja Jansen
ICONTRIPTYCH The Lamb of God Class Dates June (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Tryptych, patterns, instructions, all paints and mediums used during instruction. This is a study of icon techniques and Renaissance illuminated manuscript decorative motifs. A more stylized form will also be shown and then each artist can decide on the exact style that they wish to write on their tryptych. We remember that it is said that one writes an icon rather than paints an icon. The closed doors are decorated illuminated manuscript style. All Images - Copyright 2017 Jo Sonja Jansen
FLORAL STYLES Class Dates April July 9-13 (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Patterns, instructions, painting surfaces, all paints and mediums used during instruction. These pieces aren t finished yet and we will be ing out photos of the finished plates in the next week or so. This class is a continuation of our floral techniques and color studies. this time our studies are adapted to dark backgrounds and will be done on two plates for variations in design size. Other design elements are being incorporated into the floral designs for added variety. Special Note - These plates ARE NOT finished. These in process photos have been included so that you can see what the designs will be. Completed photos will be sent out within the next week or two. NOTE: Plates are NOT finished All Images - Copyright 2017 Jo Sonja Jansen
SWEDISH GRANDDAUGHTER CLOCK Class Dates July (Monday - Friday) Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Patterns, instructions, painting surfaces, all paints and mediums used during instruction. Northwest of Stockholm, the province of Dalarna in central Sweden provides the inspiration for this beautifu Swedish clock. Paintings in this region often recorded special events - here Jo Sonja used the anniversary of her and Jerry s marriage Kurbits or gourd trees are a distinctive motive with this style as well as faux finish techniques. The clock is tall However, it is actually two pieces and the doors are easily removed for painting. The clock is 6.5 deep, 13.5 wide and 48 tall. All Images - Copyright 2016 Jo Sonja Jansen
ROSEMALING CACKLEBERRY Class Date August 6-10 (Monday - Friday) AND OS DESIGN WORKSHOP Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Wood pieces, patterns and instructions, all paints and mediums used in class. By request, we re repeating Cackleberry for those that couldn t make it to the CRA convention this Fall. From one of the southern most counties of Norway comes the beautiful Vest Agder style of Rosemaling, a very decorative style that is used to embellish this chicken box. This is the area where palm tree and pineapple plants appear in stylized plant forms. And certainly the embellishment of the large flat bottomed tulip does make you think of a pineapple. Os Design Workshop In addition to the delightful chicken tine Jo Sonja will also be doing an introduction to OS design workshop in this seminar. You ll be spending time working with OS elements and creating your own designs on a small desk trunk as shown here. Tine is approximately 18 long, 8 at the widest and 7 tall from base to top of chicken head. Wooden chest is 13.5 wide, 9 deep, and 9.5 tall. All Images - Copyright 2017 Jo Sonja Jansen
ROSEMALING Class Date August (Monday - Friday) TELEMARK ALE TANKARD AND PLATE Class Fee: $ Class Fee Includes: Wood Ale Tankard and plate, patterns, instructions, all paints and mediums used in class. This study of Telemark style rosemaling was inspired by the paintings of Hallver Teigen ( ). There are two pieces in the class. The beautiful Tutekanne Ale Tankard (or coffee pot) replica is another in the series that have been beautifully made by Larry Pickett. Telemark plate is shown unfinished and new photographs will be sent out as soon as it is finished. The Wooden ale tankard is a little over 10 tall, with a 7.5 diameter at the base. The plate is 18 in diameter at the base. Please note - This plate IS NOT finished. This in process photo has been included so that you can get an idea of what the designs will look like.
