1 Colonial Williamsburg The Twelve Days of Christmas Colonial Williamsburg HOliday Symposium November 11 12, 2012 Join us for demonstrations and illustrated lectures by Colonial Williamsburg s holiday professionals, curators, and guest speakers as we explore traditional and new ways to celebrate and decorate for the holidays with a special focus on the Twelve Days of Christmas and the celebration of Twelfth Night. Guests will enjoy demonstrations of holiday decorating and entertaining ideas by Colonial Williamsburg s very talented visual merchandizing team. The conference also features illustrated lectures by Colonial Williamsburg curators, Jan Gilliam and Amanda C. Keller, and museum educator, Christina Westenberger. Our guest speaker and historian, Mary Miley Theobald, will discuss the history of the Twelve Days of Christmas and Twelfth Night. Optional workshops are offered each afternoon or you can opt for free time to shop or explore the Revolutionary City. Begin your holiday season in Colonial Williamsburg s Revolutionary City and Art Museums. Enjoy a stroll through history, get an early start on holiday shopping and be inspired by our holiday decorating ideas! Be part of the story.

2 Program SUNday, November 11 8 a.m. Program registration and coffee. DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, 326 West Francis Street, Williamsburg, Virginia. Continental breakfast items will be sold at the Museum Café. 9 a.m. The Myths of Christmas. Mary Miley Theobald, writer and historian, Richmond, Virginia. An Art-Full Twelve Days of Christmas. Jan Gilliam, manager of exhibition planning and curator of toys, and Christina Westenberger, associate manager, museum education, Colonial Williamsburg. 10:30 a.m. Coffee break. 11 a.m. The Twelve Wreaths of Christmas. Jan Gilliam and Christina Westenberger demonstrate wreath decorating incorporating themed ornaments. Noon People from the past bring the Twelve Days of Christmas to life. An audience participatory experience! Willie Balderson, manager, public history development, and Todd D. Norris, manager, evening programs and performing arts, Colonial Williamsburg. Lunch on your own. All optional afternoon classes take place at the Woodlands Conference Center, 105 Visitor Center Drive, Williamsburg, Virginia. 2-3:15 p.m. Optional Workshops Session I 3:15-3:45 p.m. Coffee break. Art in Metal: An Ornament Workshop. Participants in this workshop will try their hand at working with metal tooling foil to create an ornament based on an art object in the museum collection. This tinlike material is fun and easy to work with and looks stunning on a tree or at a window. No previous experience is needed. Participants will receive all materials, including scissors for cutting the metal foil. Instructor: Jan Gilliam. (Class fee: $30 per person) A Partridge in a Pear Tree. For table or mantle or just anywhere! Participants will create a topiary of natural twigs and leaves decorated with faux pears and topped with a feathered partridge, of course! This creation will be displayed in a decoupaged pot. Instructor: Don Haynie, Williamsburg, Virginia, with assistance from Susan Dippre, landscape supervisor and floral services manager, Colonial Williamsburg. (Class fee: $25 per person) Twelve Drummers Drumming. Participants in this workshop will construct a drum container suitable for forcing holiday bulbs or holding a floral arrangement. Instructor: Carol Harrison, textile artist, Williamsburg, Virginia. (Class fee: $25 per person) 3:45-5 p.m. Optional Workshops Session II Scherenschnitte: The German Art of Scissors Cutting. Participants in this workshop will explore the paper cuttings in the Collections at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and then have an opportunity to create a three dimensional paper ornament using this creative technique. The new exhibition, Quilts in the Baltimore Manner, serves as the inspiration for the ornament. No previous experience is needed. Participants will receive all materials, including scherenschnitte scissors, designed especially for the art of cutting paper. Instructor: Christina Westenberger. (Class fee: $30 per person) Cross-stitch for the Twelve Days of Christmas, But Not Your Usual Fare. These Twelve Days of Christmas patterns will have a stitchery theme. Participants will receive all materials and instruction necessary to complete the project. (Projects will need to be completed at home.) No experience necessary. Instructor: Ann Merkley, museum monitor, Colonial Williamsburg and cross-stitch designer. (Class fee: $30 per person) Pieced 18th-century Pinball Ornament. Learn to construct a 20-sided ornament based on an 18th-century fashion pinball. Participants will be shown how pinballs were made in the 18th century and have the opportunity to make and personalize their own. Basic sewing knowledge is preferred. Instructors: Melissa Mead, costume design center accessories craftsperson, and Joyce Hutton, costume design center tailor, Colonial Williamsburg. (Class fee: $30 per person)

Join Tim and Judy Olbrych and family for an evening of traditional carols in vocal harmony and instrumental settings. Keller, assistant curator, historic interiors and household accessories, Colonial Williamsburg. 10:30 a.m. Coffee break. 11 a.m. Twelve Guests for Twelfth Night? Not a problem. Colonial Williamsburg visual merchandisers, Owen Sharman and Carol Gibbs, will walk us through a myriad of holiday table top and decorating ideas that are easy to accomplish and sure to inspire your personal style and creativity. Noon Lunch on your own. Any unsold optional workshop space will be available for sale to the general public on November 1. Cancellation Policy If notice of cancellation is received in writing before November 1, 2012, Colonial Williamsburg will refund your registration fees. Refunds will not be made after November 1. Travel and/or trip interruption insurance is recommended. Check with your travel agent for details. How to Reach Williamsburg Williamsburg is easily accessible by plane, train, and car. Located in eastern Virginia, Williamsburg is about 240 km (150 miles) south of Washington, D.C., and midway between Richmond and Norfolk. The Williamsburg area can be reached via many major airlines, with more than 200 flights arriving daily, to three airports just 25 to 45 minutes away: Newport News Williamsburg (PHF), Richmond (RIC), and Norfolk (ORF).
