3 Overview: Ways t Mdify Light Our prducts prvide yu with many ptins fr mdifying the light transmitted t the spectrmeter s detectr. The illustratin here is a fabricated cnfiguratin -- as few wuld have a setup exactly like it -- t demnstrate several ways in which yu can mdify light. Ntebk Cmputer 7 USB4 Spectrmeter 2 Fr high-intensity light-level applicatins such as laser characterizatin, mre light will reach the spectrmeter than likely can be detected successfully by the high-sensitivity CCD-array detectr used in mst f ur spectrmeters. Als, sme absrbance experiments may require signal attenuatin; t much light can saturate the reference measurement. In sme instances, saturatin is avided by using a different grating, changing the ptical bench entrance aperture r adding neutral-density filters t the ptical path. Anther ptin is t adjust (via sftware) the spectrmeter integratin time t limit the interval during which the detectr cllects light. Cuvette Hlder with Filter Slt 5 6 Fiber Optic Variable Attenuatr LS-1 Light Surce with Filter Slt Entrance Aperture: Slit An installed slit acts as the entrance aperture t the ptical bench and regulates the amunt f light entering the ptical bench. The slit size is specified by the user. Slits are ptinal, and range in size frm 5 µm t 2 µm. Installed Filters In additin t the variable lngpass OFLV Filter -- an rder-srting filter applied t the detectr s windw -- we ffer ptinal bandpass and lngpass blcking filters t restrict radiatin in certain wavelength regins. Optical Fiber Our ptical fibers are available frm 8 µm t 1 µm in diameter. If yu need a great deal f light fr yur applicatin, yu shuld select a largediameter fiber. Als, in the absence f a slit, the fiber cnnected t the spectrmeter acts as the ptical bench entrance aperture. Linear Variable Filters Our high-pass, lw-pass and adjustablebandpass filters have excellent blcking characteristics and resistance t heat, making these filters ideal fr spectrally shaping the light emitted frm bradband surces. 3 Tel: Inf@OceanOptics.cm Lse Filters Our lse filters fit int ur light surces, cuvette hlders and in-line filter hlders. Fiber Optic Variable Attenuatr The FVA-UV Fiber Optic Variable Attenuatr is an pt-mechanical device that helps cntrl the amunt f light transmitted between tw fibers. The FVA-UV attenuates light unifrmly at all wavelengths frm the ultravilet thrugh the near-infrared. Integratin Time Integratin Time is a setting in ur sftware and is specified by the user. The integratin time f the spectrmeter is analgus t the shutter speed f a camera. The higher the value specified fr the integratin time, the lnger the detectr lks at the incming phtns. Abut the D-alpha Line All deuterium surces have a D-alpha line, revealed as a sharp peak in the visible prtin f the spectrum, that prduces unbalanced utput in the deuterium and tungsten halgen surces. Crrecting fr this peak -- a sharp spectral feature near 655 nm -- is difficult. Fr example, if yu adjust spectrmeter integratin time t reduce the intensity f this saturated peak, the efficiency f the system at ultravilet wavelengths drps significantly, cmprmising the signal-t-nise f the spectrum. Als, spectrmeter efficiency is typically greatest in the same general spectral range as the 655 nm line, exaggerating its effects. Prprietary Filtering Technlgy Using the same high-precisin patterned dichric filter technlgy that distinguishes ur Linear Variable Filters (page 114), the DH2-BAL: balances the intensity f the deuterium and tungsten halgen surces eliminates the D-alpha, D-beta and Fulcher lines eliminates prblems assciated with saturatin prduces a smther spectrum acrss the entire wavelength range. The PX-2 is a great surce fr applicatins requiring absrbance, reflectance r flurescence measurements, and is especially useful fr measuring ptically r thermally labile samples. The PX-2 is a lw-pwer lamp with excellent pulse-t-pulse stability. It prvides tw trigger mdes fr sftware cntrl f the flash rate. It cmes with a regulated pwer supply and an interface cable t cnnect t the spectrmeter.
