After many evenings of painting at her dining room table, she developed a technique for stress-free painting that became the basis for the ONE Stroke technique and her series of ONE Stroke painting books. Donna has kept the vision of the important basic things needed for a happy and successful life her family, her religion, and her painting. It s true in painting, as well, that there are some very important basic techniques that every painter needs to know for success. Once you learn and practice the basics of the ONE Stroke technique, you will be able to paint any design in this book. 2

3 ONE Stroke FOLKART PAINTS FolkArt Enamels These easy to use paints are a unique polymer blend that is specially formu lated for use on glass and glazed ceramics. They are highly pigmented for excellent coverage. The paints are waterbased and non-toxic. You can achieve a durable, opaque, glossy sheen with the one-step painting process. There is no primer or finish needed. The paints can be mixed and blended. When dried and cured, the paint is top-shelf dishwasher safe. Directions for Use: Clean surface of glass or glazed ceramics with alcohol. Shake paints before applying. Allow paints to air dry 21 days before using OR bake. To bake, let paint dry one hour then place project in a cool oven. Heat over to 350- degrees and bake projects for 30 minutes. Allow oven to cool with project in it. Do not open the oven door till completely cool as a shock of cold air can cause damage. Care: Hand wash project or clean in the top rack of your dishwasher. Cautions: Do not use in direct contact with food. Do not paint within 4/5" of top rim of glasses or mugs. Reverse painting on the back of glass plates is recommended if plate is to be used with food. FOLKART CLEAR MEDIUM FOR ENAMELS 4035 This transparent medium can be used to create floating effects without losing any adhesion on the glass. It can be used on glass and glazed ceramics in a similar fashion to FolkArt Floating Medium. Simply load brush with the Clear Medium, then sideload into a color. You can also mix with 50/50 with the paint to create a transparent paint. The Clear Medium can also be used as a sealer to give the painted design greater durability. After the painted piece has been allowed to dry one hour, coat the painted area with the Clear Medium. Allow to dry one hour, then bake as directed. The ONE Stroke USING ONE STROKE BRUSHES ONE Stroke brushes are essential for the ONE Stroke technique. They have been designed especially for this type of stroke work. Here s a brief explanation on the use and purpose of each brush: SUPPLIES 3 FOLKART ONE STROKE BRUSHES With Donna Dewberry s easy ONE Stroke techniques, you will need only a few specially designed brushes. FOLKART ONE STROKE BRUSHES FOR GLASS & CERAMICS These brushes have been specially designed for painted on non-porous surfaces. The softer bristles help to minimize brush strokes. Enamels Basic Brush Set 4150: This set of synthetic bristle brushes includes a 3/4" flat, 1/2" flat, and #2 script liner. Enamels Mini Brush Set 4151: This set of synthetic bristle brushes includes a #2 flat, #6 flat, and #1 script liner Enamels Scruffy Brush 4152: This is a natural bristle 3/4" scruffy. REUSABLE TEACHING GUIDES OPTIONAL Use these unique laminated worksheets to practice your strokes. To learn and practice, paint right on top of the illustrations and follow the strokes, then wipe clean and paint again! The blank Reusable Teaching Guide is a great way to practice once you ve mastered the strokes with the illustrated guides. You can also lay plastic sheets over the worksheets in this book and practice the strokes on the sheets. SURFACES FOR PAINTING The designs in this book using the ONE Stroke technique are all painted on glass and ceramic items. These items are available at most craft stores as well as department and discount stores. MISCELLANEOUS SUPPLIES Tracing paper, for tracing patterns from the pattern sheet Transfer paper and stylus, for transferring patterns Brush Plus Brush Cleaner 20480, for cleaning brushes ONE Stroke Brush Caddy 1060, for rinsing brushes Paper towels, for blotting brushes Rubbing Alcohol to clean surfaces of items to be painted. TECHNIQUE Scruffy: I originally created the scruffy by shaping the bristles of an old, worn out brush into an oval after carefully cutting them to a uniform length of about 1/2". The ONE Stroke scruffy brushes you can buy are ready to use. All you have to Continued on next page

4 THE ONE STROKE TECHNIQUE do is fluff the scruff remove the brush from the packaging and form the bristles into an oval shape by gently pulling them, then twist the bristles in the palm of your hand until they are a nice oval shape. Now you re ready to pounce the brush into paint and begin. A fluffed scruffy brush is used to paint mosses, wisteria, lilacs, and some hair and fur, faux finishes, and shading textures. This brush is not used with water. To clean, pounce the bristles in the Brush Caddy don t rake them; the natural bristles can break. Allow the brush to dry thoroughly before painting with it again. Flat Brushes: flat side chisel edge ONE Stroke flat brushes are designed with longer bristles and less thickness in the body of the brush than other flat brushes, so they have a much sharper chisel edge. A sharp chisel edge is essential as most of strokes begin and then end on the chisel edge. These brushes are ready to use from the package. Simply dampen the bristles in water and dry them with a paper towel before loading. When cleaning flat brushes, you can use the rake in the bottom of the Brush Caddy. Flat ONE Stroke brushes are synthetic and don t have a tendency to break, but be gentle. Script liners: They are used with paint that is inky (thinned with Clear Medium.) Use them this way: Dip the brush in Clear Medium. Roll the wet brush in the paint, twirling the brush to load. Pull out to the side of the palette until well loaded with inky paint. Cleaning and Care of Brushes: Proper cleaning and care makes brushes last longer and perform better. 1. Clean brushes thoroughly with water. Be gentle. 2. Brush bristles across an old bar of soap and work it in with your fingers, making certain it is distributed all the way to the ferrule. Rinse with water. 3. Dry bristles with a clean rag or paper towels, shaping them as you dry. Leaving a small amount of moisture in the bristle will not harm them. Lay brushes flat to store. 4. Optional: I like to brush the bristles on a non- perfumed, non-deodorant bar of soap to help them keep their shape. Rinse before painting again. If You re a Left-Handed Painter Always start where I say to end and end your stroke where I indicate to start. When you are stroking leaves, turn your practice sheets or worksheets so you stroke the tip of the leaf towards your body. Experiment by turning the surface at different angles to see what works best for you. 4 Brush Care Tips: Don t allow paint to dry in your brush. As you paint, occasionally rinse the bristles with water. Store brushes in a container that keeps brush bristles from bending. DOUBLE-LOADING ONE STROKE FLAT BRUSHES 1. Wet your brush and gently lay flat on paper towel to remove excess water. 2. Pick up paint by dipping one corner of the brush in one color and the opposite corner of the brush in another color (for double loading). 3. Stroke brush back and forth in a sweeping motion. Repeat step 2 once or twice until the brush is full of paint two-thirds of the way up the bristles. When brush is loaded correctly, your strokes should feel as if the bristles glide. If the brush is coarse or splits, you do not have enough paint on the brush. 4. When you need more paint: Once your brush is loaded, all you need to do to paint is to pick up a touch of paint of either color and start painting. You do not need to brush back and forth on your palette anymore. Don t brush back and forth on your palette every time you pick up paint if you do, you won t have enough paint on your brush to finish your strokes. When loading brushes #6 and smaller, load with one color first, then sidestroke into the second color to double load. TRANSFERRING PATTERNS The patterns for the projects for this book are located on the pattern sheets at the center of the book. To remove the pattern sheets, open the center staples, lift out the pattern sheets, and close the staples. To keep the pattern sheet intact, trace pattern on tracing paper with a pencil or pen. To transfer, place the item to be painted on your work surface and lay the traced pattern in position on project. Slip transfer paper between pattern and item. Trace pattern with a stylus to transfer it. On some clear items you can see the pattern through the glass. Tape the pattern in place to the backside of clear plates or on the inside of clear glasses or vases. Tips for transferring patterns: Reduce or enlarge the patterns as necessary on a copy machine to accommodate the size of your project. Use dark transfer paper for light surfaces and white for dark surfaces.

5 THE ONE STROKE TECHNIQUE Lightly tape the pattern to the surface to keep it from sliding. It is not necessary to trace every fine detail. Transfer the main outlines of the pattern. Tracing every detail takes away from the natural look you are trying to attain. USING THE PAINTING WORKSHEETS The worksheets in this book are designed to illustrate tech - niques and strokes. To practice, place kitchen plastic wrap over the worksheet and paint the motif right over Donna s painting, following the arrows and instructions. Then just remove and replace the plastic wrap and practice again. Because the design elements on the worksheets may be used in more than one project, colors on the worksheet will sometimes differ from those in the project instructions. In those cases, use the colors given in the project instructions and refer to the worksheet for techniques and procedure. PAINTING TIPS & HINTS FOR PAINTING Wash glass surfaces with soap and water, then clean surface with rubbing alcohol. Let dry. I usually paint larger flowers or buds first, then fill in with leaves. Paint your florals and leaves by building one stroke at a time. On wildflowers or vines, paint the greenery first, then come back and paint flowers, stems, and vines. Apply finishing touches by painting curlicues and your signature. Clear glass plates can be painted in a Reverse Painting technique so that the painting is on the back of the plate and the front can be used for food. When reverse painting, paint the forward details first, progressing by painting the background last. Wash and dry the trifle dish or plate and remove all stickers and glue residue. Try not to touch the surface area that is to be painted. Oils from the skin could affect the paints adhesion. 2. Tape the pattern to the inside of the trifle dish or lay the plate on top of the pattern. Trifle Dish PAINT THE DESIGN The instructions below are for the trifle dish. Instructions for the plate are almost the same. Special instructions for the plate are at end of instructions. Stripes: 1. Load the 3/4" flat brush with Hydrangea. Using the flat side of the brush, paint the wide blue stripes. Use the width of the brush for measuring the space between the stripes. 2. Add a touch of Wicker White to one corner of the brush. Using a back and forth slapping motion, paint the base. 3. Load the #6 flat brush with Wicker White. Using the flat side of the brush, paint a white stripe on both sides of each wide Hydrangea stripe. Allow to dry before proceeding. Lemons: Refer to Rosebud & Lemon Painting Worksheet. 1. Double load the 3/4" flat brush with School Bus Yellow and Yellow Ochre. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping Yellow Ochre to the outer edge, paint all the lemons, first painting a C stroke for the knobby end, then spinning the brush in a circle. Overlap the bottom portion of the knobby end. Paint the lemons that appear underneath another lemon first, then paint the lemon that is on top. 2. Load the #6 flat brush with Wicker White. Using the flat side of the brush, paint the white inner portion of the peel for the lemon halves. 3. Using the same brush loaded with Wicker White, paint the centers of the lemon halves, staying on the chisel edge and pulling strokes out from the center. 4. Dip the handle end of the #6 flat brush into School Bus Yellow and dot the centers of the lemon halves. Leaves: Refer to Leaves & Fern Painting Worksheet, using colors given here. 1. Double load the 1/2" flat brush with Green Forest and Fresh Foliage. Add a touch of School Bus Yellow to the Fresh Foliage side of the brush and blend well. Paint the one-stroke leaves by touching on the chisel edge, pushing down, then sliding the brush at the same time as you lift to the chisel edge. 2. Pull a stem into each leaf as soon as you finish stroking it, staying on the chisel edge and leading with the Fresh Foliage/School Bus Yellow side of brush. Blossoms & Signature: Refer to Rosebud & Lemon Painting Worksheet, using colors given here. 1. Double load the 1/2" flat brush with Wicker White and Clear Medium, add a touch of Fresh Foliage to the Clear Medium side of the brush and blend well. Keeping Wicker White to the outer edge of the stroke, paint the teardrop strokes that form the petals. 2. Dip the tip of the #1 script liner in Fresh Foliage and add a few dots to the center of each blossom, then dip the dirty brush into Wicker White and 16

17 add a few more dots on top of the Fresh Foliage dots. 3. Sign your name using the #2 script liner and any color of paint that has been thinned slightly with Clear Medium. FINISH Let the trifle dish air dry for 21 days to cure the paint before washing. This drying method is used because the base is attached with glue. Baking will cause the glue to soften and no longer hold the pieces together. Round Plate PAINT THE DESIGN The order of the steps, brushes used, and the colors for painting the design on the plate will be the same as directed for the trifle dish. The differences are below. Do not allow food to come in contact with paint. Use a clear plate on top of painted plate for food use or paint design on back in a reverse painting technique. Stripes: Only the blue stripes are painted in this design. I used more pressure on every other stripe to make them wider. Details: On the plate, I added a Wicker White outline around the leaves by loading the #2 script liner with Wicker White thinned with Clear Medium. FINISH Cure or bake as directed on page 3. 17
