Hello! Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Valentines Day Happy 100 th Day of School! And, lastly, Happy Winter Break! It s truly hard to believe that we are more than half way through this school year! When we return from the break, we will soon be starting work on our Annual Art Fair projects. Please read below and check out some photos of what your children, our students have been up to lately in the Art Studio. Ms. King Questions- Rking2@schools.nyc.gov If you need to schedule a meeting, I am available most Tuesdays from 2:40-3:20 or sign up for a slot during Parent Teacher Conferences.
第二十屆新春愛心大遊行藝節 20TH CHINATOWN LUNAR NEW YEAR PARADE & FESTIVAL 日期 : 年 2 月 17 曰 ( 星期曰 ) 下午 1:00 時 February 17, Sunday 1:00pm Chinatown Lower Manhattan Parade route: Mott & Canal to Chatham Square to East Broadway towards the Manhattan Bridge, completing on Eldridge and Forsyth Streets towards Grand Street next to Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
Kindergarten Students learned about the Lunar New Year celebration through sharing a read aloud, images, and conversation. The students then drew fantastical dragons in their sketchbooks-this drawing exercise reinforced using lines and shapes the kids have learned and applying that knowledge into their pictures. First Grade Students are learning about architects Second Grade Students are continuing to think about Zaha Hadid, (Iraqui/Brittish), and positive and negative space in art Friedsreich Hundertwasser, (Austrian), and artist Bodys Isek Kingelez, (Belgian Congo, Africa),who created fantastic maquettes for buildings. Students will be brainstorming ideas about what an Urban Utopia might include. To start, students will be drawing building ideas considering both form and function. through a study of Matisse s The Dance I, which can be seen at the MoMA. Students work on a drawing in their sketchbooks, and then create a painting. They learn to think about the figures, (bodies), as shapes. Students also practiced modeling the painting by creating a tableau.(tableau- French for 'living picture', is a static scene containing one or more actors or models. They are stationary and silent). This year, students are taking some creative license with choice of sky colors, as well as skin tones! I m super excited about this project, as are the students-they love to paint! Photo below taken on the Highline shared by a first grade parent (Thanks Kristen & Adrien for sharing!) If you around over the break, take your child on a treasure hunt to look for this Hadid building (28 th Street on the Highline) Matisse, 1910, oil paint
Third Grade Third graders are working on their own unique versions of Paul Klee s Cat and Bird, (on view at the MoMA). Students learn about color theory through painting with areas of warn and cool tissue paper squares. FOURTH GRADE Students are finishing up their unit on contour lines and abstract art. Here are some samples of the watercolor paintings they created. FIFTH GRADE Students are finishing their monochromatic paintings and will next embark on a collaborative painting/ drawing project based on the collaborative works of Jean Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. We will be starting these after the break! Students are now considering symbols and their use. We have looked briefly at cave paintings from Lascaux, hieroglyphics, from Egypt, and Native American symbols. Students will turn their own unique symbol into a sand painting. Klee, 1928 oil paint Below: Covers from the book project Contour Wire Portraits
Images from the Guggenheim, Hilma af Klint Fifth Grade Op Art Drawing by Tamar Popik Children need time to explore their imaginations. Ms. Ruffler s class shared a read aloud of Here Come the Aliens The students drew their own unique aliens in their sketchbooks-each with unique characteristics, and then they shared their drawing with their classmates. I love how creative the kids are! Kindergarten guitar drawings inspired by Pablo Picasso-these will be continued when we return from break!
