Page 2 THE LION S ROAR Fun Filled Art Classes! Another snow storm has come and gone, but that doesn t stop ILS students from creating art!

They will be using a scribbling technique to create these beautiful works of art. Kindergarteners are busy designing rockets in a dark and glittery outer space.

They cut out construction paper to make windows and drawbridges and then drew on some final details wonderful work!

2 Page 2 THE LION S ROAR Fun Filled Art Classes! Another snow storm has come and gone, but that doesn t stop ILS students from creating art! The next time I meet with the PK 4 class they will learn about warm and cool colors while drawing a bluebird (cool colors) in its colorful nest (warm colors). They will be using a scribbling technique to create these beautiful works of art. Kindergarteners are busy designing rockets in a dark and glittery outer space. First and Second grade just put the finishing touches on castles which were drawn on black paper with white oil pastels and then stamped with a sponge and white paint to look like stone walls. They cut out construction paper to make windows and drawbridges and then drew on some final details wonderful work! The next project for the Third and Fourth graders will be a flower shaped color wheel. The first layer of 12 petals will be painted. For the second layer of slightly smaller petals the students will look through magazines for colors to match their painted ones. This will be a little challenging, but I know they can do it! Fifth and sixth grade will begin making monotype prints in the next class. They will use foil covered cardboard as a printing plate, acrylic paints and a few simple tools to create one of a kind prints. Their favorite print will be kept as is while the others will be cut up and used in a collage. I expect to see a lot of creativity with this project. The seventh and eighth graders are finishing up a multi step project. They drew succulent plants from observation, painted them with watercolor (they were required to mix their colors to match the plants as closely as possible) and cut them out to use in a collaged still life that included a pot drawn and decorated from imagination. The final step was to create a sculpted succulent from Model Magic Clay and a pot from another type of air dry clay. The finished pieces were painted, wire details were added and they will be finished assembling them in the next class. It was a lot of work but worth it! Enjoy all your snow days! Did you know that Dr. Seuss was not his real name? His name is actually Theodor Geisel. We were lucky to have Mr. Taylor visit our classroom to read some Dr. Seuss books to us.

Did you know that was the first children's book Dr. Seuss wrote? It was written all the way back in 1937. We also read Barthomew and the Oobleck. Then we made Oobleck - Oh what fun that was!

We recently celebrated the famous author Dr. Seuss s birthday on March 2nd with a fantastically fun filled day. March 2nd is also known as Read Across America Day. It s a day to bring awareness to reading and how fun and important it is. Did you know that Dr. Seuss was not his real name? His name is actually Theodor Geisel. We wrote our very own version of To think that I Saw it on Mulberry Street. We called it To Think that I Saw it on Clapboard Ridge Road. We are currently working on our most recent STEM project. In this project, the kiddos have to make a tool or device to use to clean the Oobleck up. If you are unfamiliar with what Oobleck is, it is a sticky, green slime. It is a solid and a liquid, which is very cool. When you touch it, it turns to liquid. When the Oobleck is on a hard surface, it becomes hard and a solid. The kids can't wait to try out their creations! Submitted by Mrs. Hoke
