2 ORANGE ELEPHANT COLLAGE WHAT YOU LL NEED: 12 x 18 white paper for background Selection of orange painted paper Blue liquid tempera paint Green liquid tempera paint yellow liquid tempera paint Black oil pastel Scissors School glue or glue stick Paint brushes Eric Carle s book The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse is as delightful as the rest of his other titles. Journey through a young artist s imagination as he paints a blue horse, a red crocodile, a yellow cow, an orange elephant and many others. My first and second graders loved this book and were excited to create their own orange elephant. As with all of my Eric Carle inspired lessons, the children painted their own orange textured painted paper and used their observation skills to draw an elephant. We look at a few drawings of some elephants, including the majestic orange one in the book and together we drew elephant parts over the back of our dry painted paper. If a drawing didn t turn out as planned, the children crossed through the lines and started again. This was truly a lesson in observational drawing as the year is coming to a close and my first graders have had plenty of tracing and cutting practice. 3 BASIC ELEPHANT SHAPES PAINTED PAPER Either create painted paper for this lesson or use pre-made painted paper. If you don t have painted paper, it s totally fine to use a plain sheet of orange (or any color for that matter) paper. DRAWING THE ELEPHANT SHAPES Each child needs ONE SHEET of orange textured painted paper. With an oil pastel, follow the drawing steps in the video to create an elephants: 1. Head & Trunk 2. Body with Legs 3. Ears 4. Tail CUT OUT EACH SHAPE. DEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!3
4 PAINTING THE BACKGROUND Once all the elephant parts are drawn on the back of the painted paper, we switched gears and painted the background on a separate piece of white paper. I set out blue, green and some yellow tempera paints and the children painted a horizon line. Everything above the line was sky and below was the ground. ADDING TEXTURE TO GRASS To make the ground interesting, we painted yellow on the paper first, then painted green OVER the yellow. Using the back of a paint brush, the kids scratched grass marks through the green grass into the yellow. DEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!4
5 ADDING DETAILS ELEPHANT DETAILS After the background dried, the children cut and pasted their adorable elephant parts onto the background. Long trunks fell off the page and for the quick few who had time to add details, a tray of oil pastels were set onto the tables so important things like pink toenails and eyelashes could be drawn. 10 I can statements for ORANGE ELEPHANT Today I will learn about LINE and SHAPE, so that I CAN use OBSERVATIONAL drawing skills to DRAW basic ELEPHANT shapes. Today I will learn about COLOR and TEXTURE, so that I CAN create PAINTED PAPER using TEMPERA paint, scraping a layer of paint away to create blades of grass. I will also paint a HORIZON LINE, separating the ground from the sky. Today I will learn about COLLAGE, so that I CAN safely CUT and PASTE my shapes and arrange them to make my ABSTRACT elephant COMPOSITION. Common Core STANDARDS for ORANGE ELEPHANT CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. You can have students discuss what information they have learned from the artwork presented in The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. Guiding them with questions about the text can help them not only to understand what the story is about, but also what the artwork could mean to the viewer. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. Students address this standard when completing the artist statement worksheet of this packet (page 9). They are writing their opinion about the artwork they made based on how it was created and how they were inspired. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. After reading The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse to introduce the colorful illustrations of Eric Carle, ask students questions about the artwork, the story, etc. to formally assess their understanding of the text.
