June 10, 2018 PIECING IT TOGETHER Peace by Piecing Quilt Guild Newsletter In this issue: Karen Hudson s President Pen Guild Charity Opportunities What you may have missed Members Birthdays What s Next Block of the Month Upcoming Guild Trips and Events Upcoming Quilt Shows President s Pen When did May start feeling like August? Do you like the heat or are you missing the cooler days? I hate the heat and can t wait till it s cooler. Unfortunately, that will be a long time coming. The best way for me to survive the Texas heat is to stay inside and quilt. Since it looks like we re going to have a long hot summer, I should be able to complete a lot of my projects. If you like the heat or you re counting the days till Fall, I hope you have a wonderful summer full of fun quilting projects. Stay cool my friend, Karen

Charity Work L Bee J Bee News The first Tuesday of each month the L Bee J Bee meets from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the May Community Center in Huffman. Our quilts are donated to the Harris Health System in December of each year. Bee members work on a quilt project each month as a group and talk faster than our machines run. The fabric, batting and backing is provided by the guild. Sewing machines are available at the Center if you don t want to bring your own. Rulers, rotary cutters, mats, ironing board & iron are also available. Just bring your basic supplies scissors, pins and thread. Our next meeting will be June 5. Reminder - July is our vacation month and we will not be meeting then. If you make a quilt to donate to Harris Health System, Quilt of Valor or Humble ISD Pregnancy Resource, please use the following form when you turn in your quilt so the service hours can be recorded. Can t make it to the Bee Please consider quilting the quilts we have ready. Good time to practice those new techniques. Please feel free to contact Liz Richardson, or Kay McKinney, if you have any questions. VOLUNTEER WORK HOURS RECORD Name: Organization Benefitting: Item: Hours:

HISD Pregnancy Related Services There have been several baby quilts and blankets turned in for this program, but we need more. Melissa Whittington, the coordinator of the program, said her biggest months for deliveries are August and September, so let s all get busy and make a baby quilt to help these young ladies and their new babies. If you have any questions about the QOV or the HISD Pregnancy Related Services projects please do not hesitate to call Peggy Fain at Our latest workshop was Saturday, June 9th at Cupcake Quilts in Humble. Thank you to all the ladies who attended!

Questions and Answers Q: Do QOV quilts have to be in red, white, and blue fabric? A: While Quilts of Valor are not required to be red, white, and blue, most recipients, given a choice, choose quilts that are patriotic in theme. Fabric, patterns and blocks can be of any design appropriate for adults. Fabric used should be high quality 100% shirt-weight or quilt-weight cotton fabric. Use of military-branch-specific fabrics (Army, Navy, etc.) or non- patriotic fabric (i.e. overly floral), unless the recipient is known in advance, may create difficulty in identifying a recipient. Q: If I request a PBPQG longarmer to quilt my QOV, what do I need to furnish? A: PBPQG has a few members who have volunteered to quilt our QOV quilts. PBPQG will furnish the batting and navy-blue backing for your quilt. Once your quilt has been quilted it will be returned to you for the completion of the binding, washing, and pillow case.

Quilt Requirements Procedures for making Quilts of Valor are as follows: Fabric used should be high quality 100% shirt-weight or quiltweight cotton fabric appropriate for adults. * While Quilts of Valor do not have to be red, white, and blue, most recipients, given a choice, choose quilts that are patriotic in theme. * Patterns and blocks can be of any design suitable for a patriotic theme. Use of military-branch-specific fabrics (Army, Navy, etc.) or non- patriotic fabric (overly floral), unless the recipient is known in advance, may create difficulty in identifying a recipient. A Quilt of Valor is to be large enough to cover an average-sized adult, with an ideal size approximately 60 x 80. Finished size can be no smaller than 55 x 65 and no larger than 72 x 90. A Quilt of Valor consists of a top, batting, and backing, and must be machine quilted or hand quilted. A tied quilt is not acceptable for a Quilt of Valor. Backings provided to volunteer QOVF-registered longarmers must be 4 larger than the quilt top on all sides (8 wider in width and 8 longer in length than the top). Note: Some longarmers may have different requirements. Only member volunteers in good standing can request free-ofcharge quilting of their tops by a QOVF-registered volunteer longarmer.

Batting should be quality, low-loft batting. Quilting should be appropriate for the quilt and not overly dense, which can reduce the loft of the quilt. Binding strips should be joined with diagonal seams. Binding should be double-fold ( French fold ), attached by machine, and finished by hand or machine. A Quilt of Valor must be labeled as such. Information about making and purchasing labels is in the QOV Construction Quick Reference Guide in the Appendices section of the Policies & Procedures manual. A Quilt of Valor may be awarded in a presentation case, though a presentation case is not required. QOVs must have a presentation case when going to overseas facilities, to continuing destinations, or if requested. Before awarding, a Quilt of Valor must be machine laundered (gently, using mild detergent) so any bleeding of fabric dyes has occurred prior to awarding, and because some facilities where quilts are awarded require pre-laundering. Use of a color catcher that attracts loose dye during washing is recommended. A note, card, letter, or journal documenting the creation of a Quilt of Valor may be presented to the recipient along with the quilt. Destinations for Quilts of Valor may be requested on the foundation website. To request a destination, go to and click on the Take Action -Request a Destination button. Awards of Quilts of Valor are to be reported through the foundation website so quilts are counted. Report quilts as soon after awarding as possible. To report, go to and click on the Take Action Report a QOV Award button.

Humble NICU The Hearts for Hugs program is off to a booming success! The hospital was amazed at the last batch that was sent by the Guild members, and they are looking forward to receiving more. What is Hearts for Hugs? It is a pair of flannel hearts, one for baby and one for Mom and Dad. One goes home and is loved on while the other stays with the baby. They swap occasionally, so the baby always has the smell of family nearby. If you re interested in participating, see Sandy Canterberry at the next meeting for a pattern. The Humble NICU is accepting preemie sized hats, as well. They can be sewn with flannel or knit or crocheted with a soft acrylic or cotton yarn. Susan McKnight will have patterns available at the next meeting.

WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED Last Month s Meeting Our guest speaker for May s meeting was Carol Ann Maurer. Find out more about her HERE. What s Next Our speaker for this month is Cynthia England, and she will be giving us the secret to getting the most out of our stash. Find her website here. Find her books here. Find her on youtube here.

PBPQG Workshops ATTENTION June workshop goers!!!! The June workshop has been moved to August. New date will be forwarded as soon as it is available. We needed to change the date due to low participation. We need to at least 20 people to join. Cost $60.00 for an all-day workshop. More info to follow. JULY WORKSHOP! Please consider participating in this workshop. On July17th, our speaker will be Kelly Young. She will be talking about improvisational piecing. Kelly says it is the taking of rectangles, squares, and even the tiniest fabric scraps to create new yardage; then use the resulting scrappy fabrics in a dozen dazzling step-by-step quilt patterns. The workshop is the day of the Guild meeting and will be held at Cupcake Quilts in Humble. The cost of this class will be $44. Kelly will be using her new book, Stash Statement: Make the Most of Your Fabrics with Easy Improv Quilts, to teach the class. You do need to purchase the book if you are planning to take the class, unless you own it already. The cost of the book is $23.99 (FYI..as of the writing of this article: Amazon Kindle edition is $8.36). We also need a minimum of 20 people for this workshop. She will have a book signing at the guild meeting.

All the meals from Thursday dinner to Sunday Brunch are included. The total cost of the weekend is $270. If you haven t received your secret sister let Jackie Cousins know! PBPQG Fundraisers SAVE THE DATE!!!!!!! September 22, 2018 This is the date of our Guild's Auction. Time to start thinking about putting together those projects that will help us raise money so we can bring in speakers and workshops that you are interested in. Turn in date is September 18th. NOTHING will be accepted after this date. Please plan ahead. We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up, take down, and work the auction. Please consider helping.

PBPQG Fundraisers OUR RAFFLE QUILT IS HERE! Summertime in Texas has been revealed. It is the responsibility of each member to sell at least $20 worth of tickets. You can pick your tickets up at the meeting, along with pictures of the quilt. This is a main fundraiser for us. If you like having guest speakers and coordinating workshops, you will need to do your share. Thanks for helping us out. We cannot forget to say thank you to the talented ladies who worked so hard on making this stunning quilt!

Christmas Ornament Quilt Block of the Month 2018 By Sandy Canterberry Instead of monthly lottery blocks, we re going to create a Christmas ornament quilt in Between now and November you will receive directions for 12 different blocks. Everyone that finishes all 12 blocks will be eligible for the drawing to have your quilt quilted by Wanda Nesloney. The blocks do not have to be finished each month but must be completed by the December meeting. You will need to show me your finished block to receive credit for that block. At the December meeting, we will have Show and Tell for everyone to present their finished tops. Suggested fabric guidelines for the blocks and a finished 3 block x 4 block grid are below. However, this is your quilt and you can decide how you want it to look. This is a great project for Christmas fabric scrapes, themes or color schemes. Maybe you want to add more blocks? It s your quilt, the sky s the limit and it will be fun to see all the different versions in December.
