The program for April will be Quilting Gadgets from A to Z by Lois Pirozek. A Note from our President: A couple of months ago, while we were at Girl s Night Out in Sergeant Bluff, the group was discussing our service quilts (this is an optional thing to do). We talked about making a lap quilt for Christmas for those in a nursing home that didn't have family to get them one or the funds to buy one. We discussed having a social worker find those people for us and decided to start on the project. Then we thought that some people in our guild would like to participate in this service with us. We decided that a 12 ½ inch nine patch was an easy block for all of us to do, and we decided that we would make red our first color and then follow a month behind Vicky Johnson's color scheme for the nickel squares. We plan to use those extra blocks, so if you don't see yours in a quilt right now, just wait. They will be used. You ladies are so awesome! I can't tell you how pleased I was to count out 88 red and white blocks. You are the greatest! Bless you all. 2 Page 2 > Charm Swap In order to prepare for our Sew Fest in in the Fall we will be having a monthly charm swap. A charm is a 5 inch square. Bring 24 charms of the same fabric (comes to about a 1/2 yard) in a zip lock bag with your name on it. When you leave the meeting you will have, hopefully, 24 different fabric squares. We will have a different color to swap each month. The schedule is on the front page. This is similar to the worm swap we did. years ago. A few suggestions to help this swap run a little more smoothly. Please only put 24 squares in 1 bag. We do not have time to count each bag to see if you put 48 in a bag instead of 24 If you are wanting 2 packets please bring 2 different fabrics in different bags so a person will not get two of the same. Also if you could please stagger them so it will be easier to pick up one square as we are dividing these up. That would be greatly appreciated. What a lot of talented ladies we have in our group. 3 Page 3 (by Michelle Coenen, Secretary) The meeting was started with the introduction of three guests and one new guild member. Willa gave the Treasurer s report the guild has a balance of $9, as of the meeting. At this time, guild memberships are past due. Membership for the remainder of 2010 will be $ Michele Hayden gave an update for the Des Moines Bus Trip for the AQS show on October 9 th, The cost of the bus trip is $65.00 per person. Fee includes your admission to the show and supper at the Machine Shed. Forms will be available at the April meeting. Lois Pirozek gave a quilt show meeting update. There was a meeting on March 1 st at Green Gables. Future meetings will be the first Monday of the month at Heart and Hand Dry Goods store. More quilt categories have been added based on size. Measurements are circumference by inches: Strings: (Pieced and Appliquéd) Percussion 350 and up Cymbals Pieced and Appliquéd At this time, Kathy Kanzier is being considered as the next quilt show judge. Kathy also performs quilt appraisals. The guild was presented with the idea of including non-guild members to the quilt show to enter quilts. Non-guild member s quilts would be judged alongside our own. The tentative fee is $5 for EACH quilt for non-guild members. Guild members who work a minimum of 2 hours towards the work of the quilt show will have no entrance fee. All non-guild members will have to pay the entrance fee into the show. The guild members will have the first opportunity to enter quilts remaining open slots will then be opened to non-guild members. A vote was taken from the guild for the topic of having a banquet. A majority vote agreed to have the banquet. In addition to the memorial for Jennifer Claubaugh that will take place at the next quilt show, it was suggested that this would be a good opportunity to have a memorial exhibit of work by our dearly departed guild members. Ann Brouillette also suggested inviting the Claubaugh family to the banquet at the next quilt show, as they have expressed an interest in being involved in the show. There was a motion to vote on the idea of NOT having a program book at the next show. Instead, story cards would be shown on each quilt with the individual s information. For the purpose of advertising and raising funds from advertising, the idea of the sponsor board was considered. There was a vote: For the program book: 12; for the sponsor boards: 27. LaTomah Hauff has offered to sew the top of the next quilt show raffle quilt. The design is a barn raising log cabin. La Tomah has asked that guild members may bring scraps of fabrics in jewel tones, (deep red, blue, green, purple, and black and gold) as well as cream and beige fabrics for the background. LaTomah stated that shirtings will work as well. Please bring fabric scraps that are at least 3 inches by 10 inches in size. It does not matter if the fabrics are pre-washed or not. After the details of the quilt were given, the guild voted on a current budget for this project of $200 (to buy backing and any other fabrics LaTomah might need to finish the top), the vote won by a majority. Sherry Book s potluck sewing day took place on March 20 th, from (9 a.m. until 3 p.m.) The monthly mini was made by Jan Cook and won by Joan Guillaume. The President s challenge for the month of March was to bring a NICU quilt. Lois Pirozek collected 37 quilts for the NICU. All of the members who contributed had their names put into a random drawing. Pam Clark won the prize, which was a pattern.

4 Page 4 Continued Next month s President s challenge is to bring a new member or friend to the April meeting. During the last month, June DeVries requested red/white 12 ½ inch (12 inch finished) 9 patch blocks from three organizations: Siouxland Samplers Quilt Guild, the Sew-Shall Sewciety from Sergeant Bluff, and Girl s Night Out, also located in Sergeant Bluff. At the time of this newsletter, June had collected 88 blocks. During the March 19 th, Girl s Night Out session, one quilt top was completed and three others were started. For the April meeting, June has requested green/white 12 ½ inch 9 patch blocks. Participation is voluntary. The March meeting started off our charm pack exchange. Members brought (24) 5 inch charm packs to the meeting. During the meeting, the packs were redistributed so that each person went home with 24 different green charms. The color for the 5 inch charms for April is purple/lavender. Participation is voluntary. After the main meeting ended, the guild members played a round of the dice game and enjoyed treats that the guild members brought. The next meeting will be held on April 12 th at the First Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m. The program will be Quilting Gadgets from A to Z by Lois Pirozek. It will be a fun and informative exhibition of favorite gadgets of our members. Lois requested at the meeting for members to let her know their favorites and why they are that member s favorite tool/gadget. The monthly mini will be by Betty Pratt. Greeters will be Dianne Scholtmann and Jan Cook. Member update I have updated the and mailing list.
