2 Aims and Objectives of our Guild To enhance the knowledge of quilting within the group and the community. To preserve quilting as an art form. To establish, maintain and upgrade quilting standards. To encourage an exchange of ideas and methods. To participate in community projects. To research and preserve the history of quilting in Prince Edward County and surrounding area. Meeting Information: Guild meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M. at Pinecrest Public School in Bloomfield. Doors open at 6:30pm. Don t forget to lug-amug and wear your name tag. August 14th was Elizabeth (Beth) Hicks' 100th Birthday. Back in 1986, Beth, along with Joan O'Neill, Margaret Kerr, Nina Hicks, Mary Lou Norton and Ruth Garry founded our Guild. On behalf of the PECQG, I presented Beth with a card and a quilted pillow. Joan O'Neill came with me, to the Trent Valley Lodge Nursing Home for the presentation. She is pictured with Beth and "the pillow". It was a pleasure to meet Beth. She told us many tales about the history of the guild and the members at the time. Facts such as, Mary Lou was the first Guild President, Margaret the first Secretary, are just some of her memories. Speaking to her is like taking a ride in your very own time machine! Beth won many awards over her quilting years. I only hope I look half as good, with all my facilities, as she does and has, when I reach 100 years old! Janet Reader Day Pictured clockwise from top left below: Beth Hicks; Beth at age 97 sitting on her walker looking at a tied lap quilt (She kept knotting and quilting but was hampered by poor vision in later years); Beth and her sister Mary; the big quilt won 1st prize at CNE and Beth is sitting off to right. 4 Quilt Show Report The 2016 PECQG Quilt Show was held at the Wellington and District Community Centre, Wellington, ON. This, our 16th biannual Quilt Show was held on Sat. July 9, and Sun. July 10, It was attended by approximately 1,274 people. We had two featured guest artists: Bethany Garner, who also judged the quilts entered into the Judged Section, and Pat Borecky, a member of our guild. Our own Bill Stearman featured an intriguing interactive Antique Sewing Machine display. Scissor sharpening was available on the Sunday by ScissorMan. He was so busy that the guild has qualified to receive a percentage of his sales. Thankfully we did not need an In Memorial display at this show. The Community Centre employees were excellent to deal with, always helpful, courteous, and available. The rental costs of the facility were exactly what we expected. There were no issues with the venue over the course of our quilt show especially since most of our past issues had been addressed over the last 4 years. The Prince Edward County Women s Institute banded together to run a Café out of the Highline Hall s kitchen. They provided food which was good, simple and affordable. The Canteen was closed for the quilt show duration. Fifty one guild members entered 295 quilts in the show. All were gorgeous, unique, and displayed a high caliber of workmanship. Everyone loved the quilts and said our show was the best around. Our Quilt Show is an undiscovered jewel, we are better than Quilt Canada in many ways! Thank you to all of our members, their family, volunteers, local businesses, and our attendees. Janet Reader Day Co-chair Maggie Goode Co-chair I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the quilters that helped out at the Quilt Show. Also a very big thank you and a big hug to all the husbands of quilters who also helped in setting up and taking down. Your help was greatly appreciated and resulted in a fabulous quilt show, which would have been difficult to achieve without your help. Mary Campbell Quilt Show Volunteer Convenor" I'd like to pass on my thanks to the Quilt Show Committee for doing such a great job. It is an arduous task to undertake. It requires hard work and personal time commitment to fulfill. The whole Committee from the top down (which includes the husbands/friends) deserves credit for undertaking this task. In my opinion our show was far better than Quilt Canada - our national show - and I doubt that I am the only one who feels this way. Our membership has great talent within it and it showed in the display. Thanks also goes to the members for allowing their projects to be shown. Well done everyone!! Vicky LaFleur

8 365 DAY BLOCK CHALLENGE Have you heard about this yet? It all started last January 1, An industrious lady from Australia challenged quilters around the world to do a different quilt block each day in Quilters, and nonquilters signed up for her daily s which provided instructions for each of the blocks. They used their fabric stash or they used the yardage guidelines she created and went out and bought new fabric. A support group was created online where the challengers could ask questions, post photos, and give support to those who needed it. Many quilters started the challenge, some of them intended to start the challenge, some have dropped out, and some have put their project on hold. Everyone has probably saved the pdf copies of instructions for all of the blocks. The group of quilters from England is organizing a quilt show for next summer to show off all these varied and impressive quilts. The blocks are more than half way done now, and not two of the quilts look the same. The organizer has taken down several months of blocks from her web site so new quilters cannot join now, however, she has promised to start the challenge again on January 1, Are you interested in challenging yourself to learn a new block every day next year? If you are, you don t have to wait until I am one of those who intended to do the challenge, but other priorities took over and I had to put it on hold. I have saved all the daily instructions and will be restarting these blocks on October 1 st. That will give me a couple of months leeway next year in case life gets busy. If you d like to join me and create a local support group, both on Facebook and face to face, please me at deelia@kos.net before the September guild meeting. If the level of interest is high enough, I ll set up an initial meeting with information and tips for you to end up with an amazing quilt. I will provide you with the supplies list and more details so you can get organized and start by Oct 1 st. Once the new 365 Day Challenge begins again in 2017, you can join the worldwide support group and get the blocks ed to you directly. Check out the photos of blocks and quilts in progress on their Facebook page 365 CHALLENGE QUILT BLOCKS and UKQU 365 Challenge This activity is not part of the Guild s Challenges. Deelia Johnson Evans NEWSLETTER This is the last newsletter for me. Bill Stearman will be taking over starting with the Autumn issue. He has been given free rein to make any changes to the newsletter, so if you have any suggestions, please forward them to him for his consideration. Deelia Johnson Evans RAFFLE QUILT The winner of our raffle quilt is D. Scott from Dundas, Ontario. The quilt has been shipped to him, but we haven t received a photo of him and the quilt yet.
