4 QGIS News The February 22 nd QGIS meeting was called to order at 11:30. Chris Hurley presented Quilts of Valor and certificates to Mike O'Neil who served in the Army from 1966 to 1968 and was stationed at Camp Red Ball in Vietnam. To Benny Banayote, Jr. who served in the Air force from 1954 to 1962 and was first Sargent when the Berlin crisis broke out. To Charles Callahan Jr. served 1068 to 1969 in the Air Force71 st Special Operations Squadron in Vietnam. All the men were appreciative of the honor and the quilts. Mr. Callahan talked about his group being the only group to go to Vietnam and everyone came home. Jackie Foster and Martha Roblee invited the group to begin making charity quilts for Preemies. These quilts are to be 18 inches by 18 inches with no batting and minimal quilting. This year there will be two Charity Quilt workshops. The first is March 17 th at the Irving United Methodist Church on 30 N. Audubon. Time is 9-3 with a pitch in lunch. The second will be on March 24 th at the Little Sister of the Poor s St. Augustine Home on 86 th Street. Time will be 9-3 with a Pitch in Lunch. Karen Tyler Presented a new pattern for block of the month stating she has 40 blocks for month of January. She will be making the block of the month blocks into a quilt for charity. This month s colors are red and white. Call or Karen for more information. Show and tell had 6 presenters Janet Bagley Kathy Shain, Kay Ahr, Barb Schieb, a Quilts of Valor, Sheryl Ohere and Carol Henke. There were 38 members and two guests. Forty-one dollars was donated to Friedens United Church of Christ. Linda Semon made a request for anyone interested in making gowns for families who have suffered the loss of their Angel. If you have a wedding gown to donate please contact Linda lgws115@gmail.com Five door prizes were awarded to Rosanne Gillespie, Carol Decker, Marsha Brinson and Cathy Steele. The group then participated in a quilt-in. Margie Lindeman had prepared 50 blocks which needed to be sewn. Everyone was encouraged to try sewing a block by hand and putting sashing on two sides with a blue star corner stone. Margie will sew the finished blocks together and the quilt will be quilted by Kathy Shain and then presented to Chris Hurley as a quilt of valor. QGIS would like to do some service project each February. The next meeting will be March 22nd. Gloria Stahlhut will discuss Wide Backs and Quilters Market. She will be bringing an assortment of colors and patterns that you might want to purchase.

5 QGIN News The attendance and participation from QGIN has been great in 2018! Don t forget to bring in the current QTOM, the disappearing Nine Patch. I ll show pictures of a great variation made by Bonnie Borntrager. Topic for April will be Hexies. Lead by Judy Barmann and Pam Durant with help from Maureen Wheflen. Please bring any quilt or quilt top with Hexies for a special Show and Tell. Quilt Top of the month assignment for May will be the free pattern Fakie Hexie top from abrightcorner.com or any new Hexie Quilt top baby quilt size or larger. Keep it for a future present, or turn the top over to become a charity quilt. The speaker for May will be from the quilt shop The Scarlett Thread from Twelve Mile, Ind. I would like to have a mini schoolhouse session sometime this year. I need someone else to do one of the ~15 minute demonstrations. Charity Quilts Report 2018

7 Hello Quilters Guild of Indianapolis! President s Letter As I am writing this we have intermittent snow showers fallowed by burst of bright sunshine. Guess it is true stick around for 15 min and the weather will change. At the last QGI we all made a special efforts to say hi to each other. One of my goals is to make this guild known as a friendly and welcoming place to be because that is what we are. I have been so blessed to have many wonderful friendships because of the guild. At all the meeting you attend please make an effort to say how, how are to someone you do NOT know. Maybe that person will become one of your new best friends. Please take a class to help make those new friends and to learn a new technique or just to brush up on some old ones. I always wish we could have more time just to sit and visit and chat. I always get to the meetings I hour before start time so if you want to come early and chat please look me up. I look forward to hearing from you all. Thanks, Cathy President 2018 Quilts and the Indiana State Museum This classic Indiana Amish Botch Handle quilt was finished in April 79 years ago in LaGrange County by Susie J. Christner Yoder. The scrap blocks in blue, green, cream, brown and mauve are set against a black background with a narrow lighter blue inner border. Various quilting patterns enhance this carefully planned quilt; the alternating blocks are quilted in stylized tulips; a rope twist is quilted into the inner border, and a large cable appears on the wide outer border. The pattern blocks are quilted in parallel lines about one inch apart. Stitched into the corners of the black inner field is the inscription H.B. April 27, The back is blue cotton. Susie made the quilt for her son Harley Bontrager, who had just married in February of that year.
