1 Bits and Pieces The newsletter of the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis August 2018 August Program Chris Kirsch In days gone by, Chris tools of trade were the sterilized instruments of a dental hygienist. Time and passions changed all that when, in 1987, she somewhat impassively took her first quilting class and came away enthusiastically addicted. Chris began quilting with traditional pieces, working by hand and with a machine. She collected antique quilts for their charm and link to the past. She eventually began designing her own pieces and a passion for art quilts evolved. Today Chris instruments of choice are sewing machines, scissors and a multitude of handy quilting gadgets. Her award-winning quilts have been displayed throughout the world, including: AQS Shows, Paducah, KY & Nashville, TN Museum of the American Quilter, Paducah, KY IQA Festival, Houston, TX Quilt Expo Europa World Quilt & Textile Show, Christchurch, New Zealand Having had no formal art training, Chris understands the delightful discovery of creative talent. She teaches quilting and design at Wisconsin s Waukesha County Technical College. 2 Happy August Birthdays!

3 QGI 2018 Program Schedule Please consider taking one of the amazing workshops that the Guild provides. I had the pleasure of taking the Wolf with Pam Holland. What a delightful woman and an amazing class. There are 4 more opportunities to learn and grow as quilters this year. It is a shame to not take advantage of one of the benefits of being in the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis. See the Programs Committee to sign up at any meeting. Or call Leigh Layton.

4 QGIS News The QGIS Meeting was called to order at 12noon. We celebrated one birthday for June 31. There were 29 members and 3 guests. The charity quilt team presented examples of Preemie Quilt Squares 18X18 flannel Backing with no batting. The group was encouraged to bring these to a meeting. There were two charity quilts which needed to be tied. Members took them by the end of the meeting. No new program at the general QGI Thursday, July 12 th meeting. There will be a Garage sale and our president Cathy Franks will do a demo on binding a quilt. (bring binding and material so you can practice at the meeting) Karen Tyler and Kathy Shain made a presentation of the Block of the month Quilts that they have made for Hope For Cure.org which lines up donners with children with Cancer. We will know who each child is who receives our quilts. Karen and Kathy encouraged the membership to make extra blocks so that more quilts can be made. Block of the month for July will be a pin wheel of blue and white fabrics. Karen talked about the procedure and noted that there is a web site for further instruction. You can pick up instructions or Karen Tyler. The Quilt of Valor top made by QGIS was taken by Kathy Shain. Leigh Layton will be giving a presentation on My Grove at the July 26 th QGIS meeting. Diane Olson gave an update on the Retreat. Retreat will be at Clifty Falls September Diane was able to secure more rooms. Everyone was encouraged to fill in the form. Payments can be made. The sewing room will be available at 10:00 on Friday and until 2:00 on Sunday. Margie Lindeman told the group that Friedens is going to be doing some remodeling and has a capitol campaign in progress. She encouraged all members to donate something toward this effort. The dollar donation at the door goes to the church, but extra funds would be appreciated by the capitol planning team. The program for the meeting was a presentation given by Always in Stiches owner Capi Saxton and Stephanie Coy-Lykes Fresh finishes for Unfinished Quilt Tops. Capi talked about the three B s Borders, Binding and Backs. She said that with multiple borders, it is a good idea to remember that once you have determined the needed width. Make the first border 1/3 of the total width and the second border 2/3. We were encouraged to Think outside the Box. A small touch of color added with the binding creates interest. She also said that backs need not be boring. Try using a banner or additional blocks not used on the front. Capi also emphasized the importance of a label. The label could be a block from the front or just a corner of the quilt back. Just don t forget it. She has many quilts which were donated to her shop with no label. Then Stephanie talked about the long arm machine that was set up in the front of the room. All were encouraged to come and try their hand at the long arm. Several members brought quilts for Show and tell: Karen Tyler, Margie Lindeman, Jeanette Bagley, Marine Weflen, Marsha Brinsoquilt, Martha Roblee and Cookie DeCourcy. Quilters Hall of Fame induction for Xenia Cord will be July All were encouraged to attend. Margie Lindeman displayed the hand pieced and quilted quilt that her bee, Holy Spirit bee, had created for the 2018 Church festival July 12, 13, 14. All were encouraged to donate a dollar and fill in a chance. Upcoming programs: July 26, 2018 Gloria Stahlhut will be presenting fascinating stories about the 2018 June Fabric Mart. Come see what is coming to your favorite quilt shop this fall and winter. Exciting stuff!! August 24, 2018 Barbara Triscari hands on workshop We will all be dyeing fabric using ink, crayon and other materials. Fabric and material will be provided. Bring gloves if you wish. September27, 2018 Lynn Hodge of Quilt Expressions will do a demo with Brother Scan N Cut. This is a presentation that Lynn has given to several quilting groups. She says, It will be a fun day for one and all. October 25, 2018 new owner of Sew Crazy will introduce herself and do a timely program. More information is to follow. November 29, 2018 Pitch-in; Pitch out. Terri s Ten Top Tips. Submitted by Karen Nealis and Margie Lindeman, co-chairs

Evelyn was a very active, longtime member of QGI and my best friend until her death in May, Her fabric, books, notions, etc. have been and continue to be shared with the guild in charity quilts and the Peony Shop. The Bernina 1230 machine has a wide range of practical and decorative stitches, programmable buttonholer, and an alphabet. The carrying case, standard accessories in their box, foot control unit, sewing table, presser foot lifter, and two manuals and a book are all included. Also there are a quarter-inch foot, a walking foot, and a cut-and-sew attachment plus many bobbins and spools of thread. It is in excellent condition. The asking price is $700. The wooden cabinet has an electric lift, an insert to fit the Bernina 1230, four drawers on the right side, a thread holder on the left side, and lots of table space on both sides of the machine. The doors and top extensions can be closed to make a nice console. The asking price is $500. We would like to sell the machine and cabinet together at a discount for $1,000. A Create-A-Space wooden cutting table and cutting mat are also for sale. The table folds out to 72 x 40 inches to accommodate the large full-size cutting mat. The table folds down easily to 40 x 14 inches for storage. The asking price for the table and mat is $250. I also have a Singer 301A sewing machine with instruction book, bobbins, and a new zippered carrying case to sell. It was made in the 1950's and is a slightly larger "cousin" of the Singer featherweight and uses the same parts. It is in excellent condition, and the asking price is $150. Contact Peggy Greene at (317) or jpgreene62@gmail.com if you are interested or have questions. Please pass this information on to anyone you think might be interested. Evelyn (and I) would be pleased to know a fellow quilter is enjoying her things.
