2 Join us for lace classes, vendors, special speakers, and a LOT OF FUN for the... 7 th Annual WINTER LACE CONFERENCE! Every year we think we have a stellar slate of classes, and we don t think you will be disappointed this year. As you look at our class descriptions, we think you will agree the choice of which class to take will be hard. These are the teachers whose classes are next to impossible to get at IOLI and we are bringing you not one but six of the very best. We are excited to present the lineup for the 7th Annual Winter Lace Conference: Louise Colgan, Laurie Waters, Galena Khmeleva, Susie Johnson, Ulrike Voelcker, and Sandi Woods. Once again, we will have a vendor hall packed with lace supplies, an educational and fun banquet presentation, plus Special Friday workshops for those wanting one-on-one teacher time in MILANESE, WITHOF and sgravenmoerse, and Orenburg lace design. Our traditional Sunday brunch. The early opening of the vending hall on Friday evening! We know you will not want to miss the special banquet presentation by long-time lace collector, lacemaker, and author of the LaceNews blog, Dr. Laurie Waters, on Sunday. Once again, we look forward to bringing you this fun-packed event and to seeing you in February 2013! This is a year you will not want to miss... Friday, February 15, 2013 EXTRA CLASSES Milanese Workshop with Louise Colgan OR Withof Workshop with Susie Johnson OR Orenburg Knitting Design with Galena Khmeleva R&R Registration and Reception Vendor Hall Opens Saturday, February 16, 2013 Classes Vendor Hall Luncheon Sunday, February 17, 2013 Brunch Classes Vendor Hall Banquet and Special Presentation Belinda Belisle and Betty Ward Special Banquet Presentation Dr. Laurie Waters Lace in the Information Age Monday, February 18, 2013 EXTRA: Add-on another day with your teacher! Lace, the most complex of the textile arts is fully equal to the challenges of today s digital society. The increasing availability of information and the ease of communication influences our field in ways that are not always obvious and sometimes not welcome. A large part of the future of lacemaking also depends on our ability to speak the information language of the young. Dr. Laurie Waters writes the LaceNews blog and will give her perception of how lace is now being represented in the new media and how it can best adapt to an increasing variety of digital tools. 3 The Classes Hungarian Tape + Color Techniques for Traditional Laces All Levels Teacher: Louise Colgan This class offers students the option to choose a project from two diverse topics: Hungarian Tape or Color Techniques for Traditional Laces. Hungarian Tape designs are formed with a graceful and always interesting blend of features. Elaborate pieces can be made with relatively few pairs of bobbins. Tape sections are made up of curving trails, turns, and connections using a variety of stitches. Plaited fillings are often added to decorate spaces between the tapes. Projects will be offered to suit all skill levels. As an alternative, students may choose a project that focuses on the use of colored threads in traditional laces. Projects will cover a range of styles, including Torchon, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point, and Tape. Students will learn the techniques that will allow them to explore creative options for incorporating color into traditional designs. NOTE: For the Color Projects, solid skills in the chosen lace style will be needed. The Teacher will assist students with selecting an appropriate pattern. Continuing projects are welcome! Point de Gaz All Levels Teacher: Laurie Waters The great Continental needlelaces such as Point de Gaze, Alençon, and the Venetian points have several hundred years of technical development behind them. This class will give the student an opportunity to study the history of these laces, systematically review the stitch structure, and attempt a pattern in Point de Gaze. It will be a raised rose pattern collected by the instructor from the Zele lacemaker in Above all, the traditional hand position will be emphasized, which is rather different from the more commonly discussed position used in English speaking countries. Dr. Laurie Waters is a long-time collector, lacemaker, and author of the LaceNews blog. She is the only American to have studied at the Atelier National du Point d Alençon. Lace Knitting All Levels Teacher: Galena Khmeleva Relax... take a deep breath... now repeat after me: I can learn to knit lace! If just the sight of laceweight yarn has always caused you to break out in a rash, this class is for you. With her unique, inspiring, fun-loving teaching style, Galina will unravel the myths and mystery about the complexities of knitting lace. She will have you knitting continental before this class is over, wondering what all the fuss was about. Saturday will focus on Continental Knitting and Mooshky Madness (aka Dimensional Knitting Russian Style), and Sunday will explore the intricacies of Orenburg-style knitted lace. Finally, Galina will help individualize a lace knitting project that s just right for you. You can and will learn to knit lace. Monday Workshop Grafting With a Russian Twist and More Those innovative Russian knitters devised a simple, yet effective method for grafting. If it seems your seams are anything but seamless, this is the class for you. And MORE.... From start to finish without breaking a sweat! Galina will teach creative cast-ons to fit every knitting occasion, with a unique Russian bind-off that will leave you breathless. Page 3
4 Withof and sgravenmoerse All Levels Teacher: Susie Johnson This class will feature two very different Dutch laces. s Gravenmoerse can be thought of as Torchon with a twist with its characteristic half stitch worked on diagonal rows from right to left. It s very different and a lot of fun to make! Withof is a fine free lace with its roots in the Sluis Duchesse its creator Sr. Judith learned as a young woman. It is an exciting contemporary free lace characterized by fine threads, rolled edges, and light and shadow in highly stylized motifs. This extraordinary lace evolved to become a unique lace which can actually reflect the personality of each lacemaker. In addition, upon request and approval, students are welcome to pursue other laces, which includes help with UFOs and long-awaited projects requiring help in starting. Since she started making lace in 1981, Susie has been studying laces of all types with various teachers from many countries. Although best known for her work in Withof, she has been teaching a variety of laces for over 20 years at events such as IOLI conventions, The Winter Lace Conference, the Finger Lakes Lace Days in Ithaca, and Sweet Briar, as well as twice-weekly classes at home. Teacher from Germany Making Lace Jewelry with Ulrike Voelcker All Levels Teacher: Ulrike Voelcker This class offers you the opportunity to make one of Ulrike's lovely pieces of jewelry. During the weekend, you will learn from this award-winning lacemaker how to start and finish an easy piece of lace, which will end up as a stunning piece of jewelry. Ulrike will teach you how to deal with the material, choose colors wisely, and finish nicely. You can choose from earrings, brooches, hair clasps, and necklaces. The pieces will make also lovely presents for yourself or someone else, because they look handmade, not homemade. The teacher will supply a starter kit for a pair of earrings; cost will be approximately $7. Confirmation of courses and supply lists will be mailed by January 15. Page 4
5 Porcelain Lace Flowers All Levels Teacher: Sandi Woods Lacemakers taking this class will have two lovely projects from which to choose: Porcelain Lace Flowers or Wavecrest. Teacher from England The Porcelain Flowers are a part of a series of designs in which each pattern has been generated from one basic shape, e.g., each leaf has the same pricking. Color is used to describe the form of the leaves and on this occasion is chosen particularly to be suggestive of the Willow Pattern widely found on blue and white porcelain. The Willow Pattern was less commonly produced in green and pink versions and these two alternative color sets are additionally suggested. The colors and tones of the threads are used to describe the form of the leaves and how they are affected by light and shade. The Flowers have been designed to enable the individual lacemaker to choose the level of complexity required to work the pieces of lace. Full instructions, arranged in approximate order of difficulty, are given to allow the leaves to be worked in nine different ways. In terms of difficulty, they range from the most basic of lacemaking techniques to a more demanding selection of Milanese braids: Ribbon, Ovals (plus a variation), Lattice 1, and Kisses. WAVECREST (INTERMEDIATE PROJECT) As the name suggests, the Wavecrest motif depicts three herrings riding the crests of the waves. This course includes many ways in which to achieve painterly effects with colored threads and will explore the use of color when designing and working lace. The fishes are all worked identically, using the Milanese braid Basketweave and have small (no color-change) holes for eyes. Their tails are created by splitting the braid. The main wave has a Milanese scroll worked in color to start, with remaining waves using Cloth stitch and Half-stitch. Within the scroll design, particular attention is [paid to the linking of colors with the color shapes of the leading fish s head THE RAFFLE COMMITTEE CAN USE YOUR HELP... If you have an item or two you would like to contribute to the raffle, please let us know. Your help with the raffle helps us keep our costs down. If you can help, please contact Betty Ward at (714) or Belinda Belisle at (714) or (562) Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel, please tell us immediately so someone else may have your place. 6 Extra Pre-Conference Workshops Special Pre-Conference Workshops Friday, February 15, 2013 Do you want more time at your lace? If your answer is YES, you will want to sign up for one of the Friday workshops. Fee includes one-on-one instruction with the teacher, as well as lunch. Classes have limited enrollment. Get your registration in early to reserve your seat! ADVANCED and INTERMEDIATE MILANESE With Louise Colgan (full day) Louise Colgan's Friday class is offered for students wishing to work on larger pieces already in progress or to start an advanced piece that requires additional time beyond the standard conference days. We will limit the size of the group so each student will have greater opportunity for more personal attention and in-depth study. WITHOF and sgravenmoerse With Susie Johnson (full day) Susie Johnson s Friday s class will provide the student with more opportunity for in-depth discussions than is possible in a regular class day. This class is not for people new to Withof but is suited to all continuing people who would like to have a day where they would have more teacher time and as many questions and answers that can be crammed into one day along with technical discussions and lots of theory in addition to tweaking their work. This class is also ideal for those wanting to finish (or start) a Withof or sgravenmoerse project. ORENBURG LACE DESIGN TECHNIQUES: PLOTTING A STRATEGY With Galina Khmeleva (full day) The basic elements you know... strawberries, honeycomb, cat s paw! Now, what to do with them? The basic design features that are the hallmark of Orenburg knitted lace have evolved over hundreds of years and countless hours of knitting. In this class, Galina will demonstrate how to combine specific elements to form the inner and outer borders, frame, and center sections that all come together to create the visually stunning design mosaic you know as Orenburg lace. This class will be an enjoyable challenge for those who want to see their lace knitting skills taken to a new level. Note: There will be an additional materials fee of $10 to cover color charts and yarn used in class. Awaken the designer within!! Page 6
