2 13 th Annual Winter Lace Conference This is the 13 th annual Winter Lace Conference and, if you ask me, things just keep getting better. I think you will agree we have another great selection of classes. Back by popular demand are Louise Colgan, Susie Johnson, Elizabeth Peterson, Allie Marguccio, and Jean Doig. New to our slate of teachers are Loretta Holzberger who brings her expertise in needle lace to the program and Sylvia Fellows who is offering our first Beginning Bobbin Lace Class. Our new Beginner s class holds a special place in my heart. We are pleased to use a portion of our raffle proceeds to underwrite the new Betty Ward Scholarship, designed to support those new to lace making. Betty was always there to support anyone learning a new skill many of us reading this learned to knit or a multitude of other needlework skills from Betty. Betty s scholarship will cover the class registration for those either brand new to bobbin lace or those who have been on their lace journey for a year and want to improve. I can t think of a better way to honor Betty. Kicking off the weekend are the highly successful mini classes. In addition to our popular Milanese and Bucks/Withof mini classes, Elizabeth will be teaching how to make her exquisite leaves in variegated thread and Jean Doig will leads us through the steps for blocking our beautiful lace knit. Back again is our vendor hall packed with lace supplies, an educational and fun-filled banquet presentation, and all the fun you can pack in one weekend. I look forward to seeing you in February 2019! Belinda The Weekend at-a-glance Friday, February 15, 2019 EXTRA CLASSES Milanese Workshop with Louise Colgan OR Bucks, Withof, & More Workshop with Susie Johnson OR Variegated Leaves Workshop with Elizabeth Peterson OR Blocking and Finishing Your Lace Knitting with Jean Doig R&R Registration and Reception Vendor Hall Opens Saturday, February 16, 2019 Classes Vendor Hall Luncheon Sunday, February 17, 2019 Breakfast Classes Vendor Hall Banquet Monday, February 18, 2019 EXTRA: Add-on another day with your teacher! Special Presentation Knitting and Knitted Lace A History by Jean Doig Jean Doig will lead us on a journey of knitting history from where knitting began to the present, with a focus on lace. We will explore the first country to knit, learn about the Wedding Ring Shawl origins, travel all the way up to Herbert Niebling knitted art lace, and discover some of the new art shawls coming out today. On our journey we will get a brief a tour of the countries knitted laces came from, and we will be treated to a fashion show, illustrating a shawl from each country. This is definitely a presentation you don t want to miss! For information on Jean s background, see her class description. 1

3 Special Pre-Conference Workshops Special Pre-Conference Workshops Friday, February 15, 2019 Do you want more time at your lace? If your answer is YES, you will want to sign up for one of the following EXTRA Friday workshops. We will limit the size of the group so each student will have greater opportunity for more personal attention and in-depth study. Get your registration in early to reserve your seat! ADVANCED and INTERMEDIATE MILANESE With Louise Colgan (full-day workshop) Louise Colgan's Friday class is offered for students wishing to work on larger pieces already in progress or to start an advanced piece requiring additional time beyond the standard conference days. BUCKS, WITHOF, and More With Susie Johnson (full-day workshop) Susie Johnson s Friday class will provide students with more opportunity for in-depth discussions than is possible in a regular class day. This class is not for students beginning a lace that is new to them, but is suited to all continuing people who would like to have a day where they would have more teacher time and as many questions and answers that can be crammed into one day, along with technical discussions and lots of theory in addition to tweaking their work. This class is also ideal for those wanting to finish (or start) a project. VARIEGATED LEAVES With Elizabeth Peterson (full-day workshop) This class, inspired by Christine Springett, will teach how to make leaves and then make them consistently to produce these two patterns. The small circle will give the experience necessary to make the heart. In the oneday class, students will complete the circle first. The heart will be started next and possibly even finished. Threads will be provided. Bring your pillow, bobbins, pins and other basic supplies. BLOCKING AND FINISHING YOUR LACE KNITTING With Jean Doig (full-day workshop) Want to learn how to block to make your work look professionally finished? Don t have the Tools/Equipment you think you need to finish your pieces? In this one-day workshop, we will learn how to block with blocking wires, cord and pins, mats, or just pins and a tape measure. Strange shaped pieces? No problem. Bring them along. 2

4 The Classes Bucks Point - Old Becomes New, Withof and More All Levels Teacher: Susie Johnson (U.S.) Bucks Point is a beautiful, elegant English bobbin lace with net ground and prominent gimp to draw the eye to the design motifs. This year students will have the opportunity to work patterns that have been reconstructed from Susie s personal collection of old lace. These lovely old pieces have some fascinating quirks not normally seen in the patterns in the commonly used Bucks books. While these patterns are best suited to those with previous Bucks experience, beginners to Bucks will be welcome and will begin with more traditional patterns. The flow and rhythm of Bucks patterns make it a pleasant lace to work! Anyone who wishes to either begin or continue Withof is welcome to join this class. For those whose interests lie elsewhere, other possibilities include Torchon bookmarks or Christmas ornaments, Ulrike s gold stars, s Gravenmoerse, and Brussels Duchesse. In addition, upon request and with approval, students are welcome to pursue other laces, which includes help with UFOs and long-awaited projects requiring help to start. Since she started making lace in 1981, Susie Johnson pursued the serious study of many different types of laces with different teachers from a number of different countries. She is best known for her work in Withof, but almost as soon as she learned to make lace, Bucks Point became her favorite lace and she spent many years studying it with a variety of teachers. She has also been teaching variety of other laces for almost 30 years at events such as I.O.L.I. conventions, The Winter Lace Conference, the Finger Lakes Lace Days in Ithaca, and Lace at Sweet Briar as well as twice-weekly classes at home. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she has been the co-coordinator of the International Poppy Project. She is also on the IOLI Proficiency Journal Committee. Milanese and Hungarian Tape Lace All Levels Teacher: Louise Colgan (U.S.) This class will offer students the option to learn about Milanese or Hungarian Tape Lace. Both of these types of lace include unique characteristics while also sharing features in common. We will be able to explore their similarities and differences. Milanese is a freeflowing tape-based lace characterized by special decorative Braid stitches that become integral features of each design. Adding color and metallic threads allows lacemakers to make their own distinct pieces from the selected patterns. Hungarian Tape designs are also formed with a graceful and elegant blend of stitches. Elaborate pieces can be made with relatively few pairs of bobbins. Plaited Fillings are often used to decorate open spaces surrounded by the tapes. The creative nature of both of these types of lace make them suitable for traditional and contemporary interpretation. Projects will be offered to suit a variety of skill levels. A solid foundation in basic Bobbin Lace skills is required. Ability to read diagrams is also recommended. Louise Colgan is a lacemaker, designer, and teacher with experience in a broad range of Bobbin Lace techniques. She began making lace in 1985 and has been teaching for 30 years. She has served on the Board of the International Organization of Lace, Inc. as President and is currently Chair of the Proficiency Program Committee. Louise has taught Bobbin Lace classes at many I.O.L.I. Conventions, plus workshops for U.S. members of O.I.D.F.A. and regional guilds. Louise has exhibited her work both locally and internationally and was a participant in the renowned International Poppy Project. Her designs have been included in the LACE EXPRESS magazine and the I.O.L.I. BULLETIN. Additionally, she has published three books of original patterns and has made an instructional video on Milanese Lace. 3 Milanese Hungarian Tape Lace

5 The Classes (continued) Decorative Stitches in Idrija Lace Beginning and Continuing Teacher: Allie Marguccio (U.S.) In this course, students will learn and/or review the basic skills required to make Idrija Narrow Tape Lace, including the narrow tape, double stitch, half stitch, various corners, gentle curves, picots, plaits, and sewings. They will also be introduced to some of the fascinating decorative stitches used in this lace, including slince, štručke (small loaves), and various spiders. Each student will receive a packet of diagrams that correspond with all class patterns. Prior to the class, students will receive a list of patterns, including optional but highly recommended skill patterns for those new to Idrija lace. Alexandria Marguccio (Allie) is the great-granddaughter of a Slovene bobbin lacemaker and is committed to carrying on this family tradition. She studied bobbin lace in Slovenia under the tutelage of Metka Fortuna, director of the Idrija School of Lace and Stana Frelih, Master Teacher. Allie s lace work and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant study project was showcased in 2009 as part of a Slovenian Cultural Heritage Celebration. In the summer of 2013, her lace work was part of an Ethnic Crafts exhibit at the Bottle Works. Her lace work was also featured in a 2016 exhibit at the Governor s mansion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 2017, Allie was one of four fiber artists featured in a PBS documentary titled, Pennsylvania Traditions: Woven Together. Gros Point de Venize Needle Lace Beginning and Continuing Teacher: Loretta Holzberger (U.S.) Gros point de Venize is a very dimensional needle lace dating back to the 1500s, with heavily padded contours and embellishments. Learn the special techniques and stitch a beautiful butterfly. You may choose the weight of thread to use depending on your experience and eyesight. Patterns will be in sizes for two thread weights: #80 tatting cotton or Guttterman silk 100/3. Bring small tapestry needles, #24 or #26, your thread choice in white or ecru, sewing thread in any color, small sewing needle, your favorite magnification, and a personal portable lamp if you have one. Patterns and instructions will be provided. Loretta Holzberger has been doing needlework since she was a child and needle lace for over 30 years. She is the author of Needlelace and Stumpwork and Silk Flowers to Dye For, both on Amazon. She has been an active member of the Needle Arts Guild of Puget Sound for over 30 years, the Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery International Guild, Inc. since its inception in 1992, as well as the Lacemakers of Puget Sound. Loretta serves as the president well as the International Organization of Lace, Inc. Our Raffle Needs You! 6 The Classes (continued) Lace Knitting Teddy Bear Shawls Beginning and Continuing Teacher: Jean Doig (U.S.) Never finished a shawl in a knitted lace class? Here is your chance. Knit a Faroese Island Lace Shawl, and a Shetland Lace Shawl to fit a seated 14 Teddy Bear in this class. These two shawls will be produced in the traditional methods from start to finish. You will start and finish both shawls or at least finish one and know how to finish the other. These are easy fun shawls that will provide you with the knowledge to finish any shawl you have started but are not sure how to finish. Jean Doig says, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. My mother started my love of fiber arts with knitting and crochet at 5 years. She had me do my needlework over and over until it was correct. From there I learned Embroidery and Needlepoint, then ridged heddle and card weaving. By age 15, I was also tatting, spinning, and dyeing. At 21, I learned Bobbin Lace, and when I was expecting my first child, I learned Netted Lace. There are so many variations to fiber arts that I am always learning something new. Bedfordshire Lace Bruges Lace Bruges and Bedfordshire Lace Beginning and Continuing Teacher: Elizabeth Peterson (U.S.) This class is designed for those wishing to explore and perfect either Bruges or Bedfordshire lace. Bruges lace students will learn the basic tape, plaits and picots, several types of flowers, leaves, and the scroll. Continuing students will learn how to navigate the fillings and some additional Bruges techniques. Those working on Bedfordshire lace will have an introduction to this traditional English lace. You will learn plaits, picots, 9-pin edge, trails, bouncing plaits/leaves off the trail, crossings, and the basic Beds leaf. Continuing students will learn adding/discarding pairs invisibly, the Beds kiss, and raised and rolled tallies. Students will be able to work at their own pace with patterns provided or bring patterns to discuss and explore possible working solutions. Both are fun and traditional laces to make come learn some new tricks to add to your lacemaking skills. Elizabeth Peterson started making lace in 1985 and teaching in She has attended several I.O.L.I. conventions and area workshops, taking classes from many teachers, both nationally and internationally.
