1 552 S. Murphy Avenue Sunnyvale., CA (408) Fall 2015 Vol 33 No 3 Our New Exhibit Thread Around Holes When most people think of lace, they think of something white, fragile and old. The Lace Museum s current exhibit, Thread Around Holes, hopes to dispel that idea. Twenty contemporary lace artists working in a variety of media from wire to ceramic to cyanotype as well as traditional thread are featured. Pieces are vibrant in color and several incorporate beads. They range in size from a few centimeters to a life-size human figure and a life-size tree. Bobbin lace, needle lace, knotted lace, knitting, crochet, tatting, ceramics and 2-D art will all be seen in a new light at this exhibit. A student s corner showcases lace made by school-age children in lace museum classes. Many of the guest artists are from the Bay Area, with a few from other parts of California, Texas, Washington and Oregon. Come and see how modern artists are re-thinking the art and craft of lace making. The use of color, the use of unusual materials and the use of lace in other media such as ceramics is extending the visual appeal of lace. The exhibit also features a small exhibit entitled, Make Lace not War!, featuring 20 th century anti-war and patriotic themed pieces of lace and lace-making tools. The exhibit runs through October 31, The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free except for group tours of 6 or more where we ask for a small donation of $3.00 per person. 4 4 The Lace Museum & Guild (408) MUSEUM NEWS CORNER Visit The Lace Museum Gift Shop We have two new bookmarks and a new postcard in The Lace Museum gift shop. The new bookmarks are Italian bobbin lace and Point de Gaze and the bookmark showcases our spectacular sparkle tatted Victorian collar. These items make wonderful gifts. Lace of the Quarter Fall 2015 Chrysanthemum Lace The current exhibit features two pieces of Chrysanthemum lace. This is a modern style of bobbin lace with a disputed history. Cathleen Belleville published a book on the basics of this style of lace and included several patterns. According to her it was developed in the early to mid 1900s and nearly every European country claims to have created it! It is similar to Russian and Milanese style laces. This lace is made in lovely curving petal like units made of cloth or half stitch, a pivot and split spider ground work joined with a raised rib. Kay Asahi, a well-loved bobbin lace teacher in Southern California made a round doily from one of Cathy s patterns in the traditional white bobbin lace thread. But as a teacher, she also created one more unit than needed so that she could demonstrate to her students how the individual units work. The lace museum s own Eleanore Schwartz also worked the same round doily pattern but she choose to use to shades of rose color thread which gives a more contemporary look to the piece. Both doilies and the chrysanthemum lace unit are in the Thread Around Holes exhibit as is Kaye s pricking pattern. Kay s pieces are in the permanent collection of the Lace Museum and were donated by her estate. Eleanore s piece remains in the private collection of its maker and was exhibited at the 2015 San Mateo County Fair.

6 6 The Lace Museum & Guild (408) MORE MUSEUM NEWS A Heart-felt Thank-You The Board of Directors of The Lace Museum would like to extend a sincere thank-you to all those listed on the right who helped out at the San Mateo County Fair, Saturday, June 6 through Sunday, June 14. Thank you to each and every one of you for all your help in promoting the museum. We could never do it without you. Karen Alger Sandy Baker Arlene Essex Suzanne Fouche Donna Jeffrey Donna LaVallee Debra LaVergne Teresa Mize Elis Nielsen Eleanore Schwartz Pat Wootten Fun at Hands On The Arts a recap by Pat Wootten After a bit of a cloudy start, May 16 th turned into a bright sunshiny day. It was the 30 th anniversary of the City of Sunnyvale s Hands on the Arts program. There were 33 art booths surrounding the lake at Remington Park. After the children purchased their wrist bands they were free to choose any of the arts projects. This year The Lace Museum offered a braiding project called fill the gap. The braid was designed as a backpack clip. Octagonal looms and thread kits were prepared in advance. Each loom was identified with a sticker with the museum s name and address. The children could take these looms home and continue braiding. We had several wonderful high school helpers who learned the technique very quickly and then taught it to the younger children. Over 280 children had a wonderful time with this project.
