Contact LE ADAMS President's Message Sue Clarkson / President click here to Sue Welcome to a new year of the Northern New Mexico Quilting Guild! We have a busy year planned for everyone. Details are still being finalized, but there are some things starting to shape up. Although the 2018 Quilt Fiesta made a substantial amount of money for the guild, we have been outspending what we have been taking in the last few years and have gotten to the point where we need to replenish our coffers. Deb Martinez has agreed to head up a committee to explore our fundraising options. Also Kitty Squire, our guild treasurer, will be walking everyone through the proposed 2109 budget at our January meeting so we all know where we stand, where the money comes from and goes, and what s at stake. Thanks to everyone who completed a survey, the board has a clearer picture of what everyone is thinking, what they expect from the guild, and what they 2/12

3 believe they can bring to the table. The goal of the survey was to see where we maybe needed to change course or do things differently in In short, everyone seems pretty pleased with the guild as it is right now, there weren t any overtly negative comments, lots of minor suggestions and thoughts on what people would like to see slightly more of rather than big changes. The board had a great discussion on the survey results and will be implementing many of your suggestions in the coming months. One of the changes we can start on immediately involves the annual county fair. Since the fundraising opportunity there is dwindling, it was suggested that maybe our booth at the county fair could be used more as an educational opportunity than a fundraiser. Therefore, we d like to put together a committee to create a booth for the county fair that focuses on educating the community at large, possibly including an activity for kids to promote quilting. As part of this, I ll be announcing a President s Challenge at the January meeting of 12x12 pieces for a display to attract people to this booth. Since this is all in the beginning stages right now, if you have an interest in helping with this initiative, please let me know. We could really use someone (or someones) to head this up and be our liaison with the county fair staff. In conclusion, please don t think the survey was the only time we want to hear from you. As we go along, making decisions and fleshing out details, everyone on the board definitely wants to hear your thoughts and ideas as well as give everyone the opportunity to jump in and help out. We can definitely have a great year, but we need your participation to make it so. See you at the January meeting! One of the comments that appeared on the survey more than once was the guild should have more quilting "bees," where there's no workshop but is more geared toward socializing and trading tips. The guild currently has a weekly stitch-in, every Thursday in the classroom at Santa Fe Quilting. This is open to any guild member to come and work on any project they presently have. I know I've seen the participants often go to lunch afterwards, so this is a great opportunity to informally socialize with other guild members. Presently only the morning stitch-in is being held from 10 a.m. to noon. Later in the year when people won't have to drive in the dark, we'll be reinstating the afternoon stitch-in from 4-7 p.m. So if you're one of the people looking for a quilting bee, check this out. 3/12

If so, the first program of 2019 will enlighten you. Resizing Any Block is a skill-building talk by Cindy Barfield that will follow our regular business meeting. Cindy will share with us tips and techniques for up- or downsizing some of your favorite blocks. Bring a notebook to take notes and a camera to capture visual samples. MARCH meeting March 18 6:30pm-9:00pm Santa Fe Woman s Club Karen Kay Buckley will be our guest speaker with the topic To Border or Not to Border. Arrive on time for this meeting as Karen will present her program BEFORE the regular business meeting. Karen will teach two classes while here; both the Tuesday and Wednesday classes will be held at the Nancy Rodriguez Community Center on One Prairie Dog Loop. *KAREN BUCKLEY CLASS: Modern Dahlia Tuesday, March 19 9:30am-12:30pm Nancy Rodriquez Center Modern Dahlia, a hand applique class, still has seats available for $40. The pattern fee for this class is $17 and will be paid directly to Karen on the day of class. *KAREN BUCKLEY CLASS: Circles Squared Wednesday, March 20 TIME??? Nancy Rodriquez Center Circles Squared, a machine applique class, still has seats available for $40. The pattern fee for this class is $30 and will be paid directly to Karen on the day of the class. *Contact Deb Martinez to schedule for either class, which will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis until February 15 when the remaining seats in the class will be made available to non-guild members for a cost of $60. Scholarships are available for members of the Guild if you are unable to afford a class; please contact Sue Clarkson to apply. MAY meeting May 20 6:30pm-9:00pm Santa Fe Woman s Club Show and Tell! Bring a quilt you made from one of YOUR favorite quilt patterns. If you ve made two from that pattern and they look very different due 4/12

As an added bonus for this meeting, if you make a QOV quilt in red, white, and blue and donate it at this meeting, you will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a $100 prize. Quilts eligible for the drawing must be complete OR include a top and back, ready to be quilted. Because of the huge demand for QOV quilts needed by May 1 st, if you wish to donate your quilt before our program, please do so! You will be entered in our drawing for each completed quilt you submit (or for each top and back you submit) before the May 20 meeting. Need help getting started on a Quilt of Valor? Saturday, February 2, is National QOV Day! Join the QOV mini group 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at Santa Fe Quilting. Stop by to learn more, help a lot or a little, and be inspired! The full package includes three nights and ten meals. Both shared (double) and individual (single) rooms are available. $224 for a double room $357 for a single room Other options to accommodate individual schedules, including day sewists, are identified on the registration form. Dining is family style with retreat-center-planned meals. Some special dietary requests can be accommodated. All rooms and buildings are handicap accessible. 10 Helpful Bits The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council is offering free professional photography of your 2019 Fiesta entries! The photography dates are: January 24-25, 2019 and February 21-22, 2019, from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The schedule on the first day (January 24 and February 21): Beads, Crochet, Lace, and Polymer Clay in the morning session; Knitting, Sewing, Rug Hooking, and Weaving in the afternoon session. The schedule on the second day (January 25 and February 22): Dolls, Embroidery, Felting, Mixed Media, and Silk Painting in the morning session; Quilts in the afternoon session with the understanding if we don't get enough signups for morning session we can bump up the quilts into the morning. Sign up forms will be available on the council website by January 5, 2019, so watch for them! Have you started a "Crown Royal" project or been wanting to? Le Adams has lots of those little purple velvet bags ready to go into a quilt or two, all washed and some prepared for patchworking.
