1 Pieces & Patches April 2014 Volume 29 Issue 8 President s Message If you missed our March meeting, you missed a wonderful celebration. We celebrated the talented members of our guild, who gave us our most successful show ever. As an old retailer, I can tell you that success in this kind of business is when you can beat your previous year. Our guild does this with every show. Take a look at the reports in this newsletter to see just how incredible quilt show 2014 was. And following the theme of talented guild members, a very special thank you goes to Willa who stepped up, with very short notice, and presented a very special program. Willa transported us back to a time when red work and penny squares were the rage. Willa is not only an AQS author. She avidly works to preserve our quilting heritage. The antique and not so antique quilts that she shared were amazing. Thank you, Willa. The evening was capped off with a cake presented by the show chairs, and time to hang out and spend some time together. So what is next, you ask. We are quilters, there is always something. In April we will approve our budget for next year, and we will vote for our new officers. All the info you need to make informed decisions is in this newsletter. At the April meeting we will also have the registration forms for Quilt Escape This is shaping up to be an event you will not want to miss. More details to follow. Our 2015 guild challenge has been announced. Check out the article in this newsletter, and go shopping for fabric!!! See you all soon, Caryl

3 It was THE PERFECT STORM Quilting by the Gulf XV 2014 Festival of Quilts CONGRATULATONS on a GREAT SHOW!! We did it - we knocked it OUT OF THE PARK!!!! We would like to extend a hearty thank you to everyone in the VAQG who helped to make this the Best Quilt Show EVER! We profited over $42,000 and had over 2,600 paid attendees. We couldn't have done it without the help of every one of you. Thank you for making our job that much easier. Andrea Shlasko Quilt Show Chair Betty AuKee Quilt Show Co-Chair A HUGE message of appreciation goes out to Andrea and Betty for doing such a great job with this year s show. THANK YOU, ladies!! Jann Nohe s quilt A Florida Wedding won Best of Show. She also won Best Machine Applique award. Congratulations Jann!! 3 Congratulations to Lunetta Knowlton. Her Over the River quilt won both Viewers Choice and Men s Choice.

4 Our Raffle Quilt Winner By now our gorgeous raffle quilt seemed like part of our family. It was hard to see it leave our care. But despair not! It was won by a lovely lady in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio who is a quilter and her name is Carolyn Call. We can rest assured it is in good hands. The winning ticket was sold by Bonnie Riggles. In case you missed the announcement at our last meeting, this quilt was appraised at $6875. Many members had a hand in creating this beautiful quilt and you should all be proud. Speaking of beautiful quilts, guild member Elaine Ellison has been asked to exhibit her 22 mathematical quilts in a gallery show at Stony Brook University for April and May. She has been invited to give a talk at the university on May 9th. Congratulations, Elaine. Also, Irene Piggott had a showing of her quilts at Deborah s Quilt Basket this past weekend. She also had a display of her quilts filling one entire room at the Englewood Art Museum this past fall. Kudos, Irene! Please remember not to wear perfume to our general membership meetings. Thank you! COMMUNITY SERVICE The Seam Ripper circle will be taking over Community Service duties officially on June 1 st. However to make the transition go smoothly, they are already helping Bonnie and me at the general meetings. So please stop by the Community Service table and meet your new committee members. They have some great ideas for future Headstart and hospice quilts. Bonnie and I will deliver 35 hospice quilts to Venice Tidewell in April. Thank you. Linda Richter 4

6 The new nominees for our Board are: Mary Johnson President Fourteen years ago this May, I went to my first VAQG meeting. That summer I attended the workshops and in Sept. I officially joined. Learning to quilt from many of you was a great gift. I am an active member of the Moose; love to play cards and travel. I live with my husband, Bob, of 49 years; have three grown children and five grandchildren. Along with various school volunteer positions, I have been a V.P. of VAQG. I look forward to serving a wonderful organization. Leslie Lacktman 2nd Vice President After living in Wisconsin all my life, I moved to Siesta Key in '92 with my two boys. And now I m retired to do whatever I want! First on my list is to come back to sewing. I sewed garments since I was 8. Now I am excited to learn about quilting and embroidery from all of you most knowledgeable ladies, and make new friends through the Venice Quilt Guild. Barbara Shapiro Secretary I moved year round to Venice with my husband, Jerry, in July 2002 from Grand Rapids, Michigan where I had lived my entire life. That August I joined the guild and a circle. Besides being secretary for several years I have also served as the guild web master and member at large. I have also gone on several of the guild quilt escapes and entered quilts in our shows. Dawn Moore Treasurer After a career in the life insurance business, I retired in 1995 to live on a 42 foot boat in the Keys. My other interests include breast cancer advocacy and promoting slow and sensible growth in beautiful Sarasota County. Since joining the guild in 2005, I have served as President and chaired the Bylaw and Finance Committees, and the 2012 Quilt Show. I worked on the conversion of our bookkeeping system to Quickbooks in I m looking forward to another two years as your Treasurer. Sue Hamilton, Director at Large I am pleased to be nominated for a second term as Director at Large. As Non-Circle Rep I can keep the newer members and those not in Circles informed and up to date with our news. I have made about 30 quilts and wall hangings, as well as many placemats and napkins, during the last 20 years. In the 12 years since joining. I have participated or done the Show booklet four times and the directory four years. Thanks to the Guild, some of my works have been displayed in homes around the country. 6
