1 August 2017, VOL. 14, Issue 5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Happy July all quilters!! Wow, can you believe that July is more than half over??? What have you been doing this summer? Pinnacle Quilters just had our annual barbeque this past Tuesday, July 18th. It was awesome, as usual --- lots of great dishes and a great turnout (I counted 50 in attendance by the time we all arrived). And, we gained a new member (more about that from Carol, our Membership Director). Oh, and we were done with everything and on our way home by 8pm ---- yes, I did say EIGHT PM!!!! How can you beat that??? The BBQ would have not been possible without the efforts of Jeanette and Berry Perdue (our Hospitality Directors for the event), Diane & Wayne Mezerkor (our BBQ chefs), and to all of our members who brought the amazing side dishes, appetizers, and desserts. THANK YOU SO MUCH -- we couldn't do it without you! At the BBQ... We presented the 2017 Opportunity Quilt "Sunrise in the Pinnacles", to Cathy Warrick (member from San Jose), who was THRILLED ---- she said she "loves" the red backing, too!!! We welcomed Ingrid Leitenberger and Patty Kneebone as Co-Directors of Baskets/Donations for the upcoming year, and Karen (& Rod) Twitchell as Boutique Director. Welcome to the Board!!! Charms were also presented to the members of the Board for their participation in keeping the guild on track and making decisions to present to the guild. Diane Mezerkor, on behalf of the guild, presented our "non-quilting" bookkeeper, Ann Strickland, with her kingsize, reversible, peacock-themed quilt as payment for her hard work this past year. It was cut and pieced by members of the Wednesday Sip 'n Sew mini-group, which meets at Bev Hanagan's home. Thanks to all "Sip 'n Sewers"!!! We had an abbreviated business meeting and a small "Show & Tell" --- amazing work, as usual!!! We do have quite a few talented guild members --- talk to them, pick their brains, learn new things. There are many more exciting things planned for the remainder of this year come to guild meetings to find out so you can join in the fun!!! Take a class, join a mini-group, visit a new quilt shop!! Expand your horizons!!! Be a part of the guild, not just a member!!! JOIN!!! In closing, we are having a great year, doing amazing work for ourselves as well as for our charities, and will strive to continue to help our community with our quilts and service. Thank you for allowing me to be your President this year, and I look forward to another great year in !!!! Happy quilting, Dianna Smith, President What's Happening! 4 ******* Community Service ******** Serving the community through charitable activities involving quilting. On-going Services Quilts for Chamberlains Children's Center We are always in need of twin size quilts for boys and girls at Chamberlains (should be at least 60" x 90") and crib size quilts for babies. If the quilt you donate can't fill the requests needed at this time, it will be saved until a suitable home can be found for it. Food Drive for Community Pantry Bring non-perishable food items to the Guild Meetings and you will receive one ticket toward the raffle basket of your choice. Community Pantry is struggling to fulfill the needs of those less fortunate in San Benito County. (One raffle ticket per Guild Member, please.) Community News Earlier in the month we took four quilts to Chamberlains Children Home and four quilts to Emmaus House. We took seven quilts to Emmaus House this week along with many other items that our members donated. The stuffed animals were well received as they have many children at the home just now. We have many more quilts in the works too! Thanks to all the members who have worked so hard to provide these quilts to all these children. Keep Quilting! Bev Hanagan, Community Liaison DONATIONS Donations of fabric and other quilting supplies are always welcome! We have raffle baskets available at each meeting -- buy a ticket or two and try your luck! Remember that a donation for Emmaus House (household items) will earn you a free ticket. You can also earn a free ticket with any donation of blocks, fabric, quilts or pillow cases for Quilts of Honor. Happy Quilting! Irene Towler quilts of honor Join us in honoring members of our active military and veterans by showing them how much we appreciate their sacrifice and service with our Quilted Hugs of Gratitude. These quilts will be presented to our veterans at our County Fair on Saturday, September 30th, Reminder -- Help us out with quilt tops and bindings at the August meeting's "Sew Night!" 6 Janice Goodman askes the questions, you get an insight into the life of one of your fellow quilters! This month, Janice speaks with Dianna Smith of Salinas, CA. Dianna is Pinnacle Quilter's current President. JG: Lets start with an obvious question, how long have you been a quilter? DS: I have been actively quilting since 2000; but have known about and participated in creating quilts since I was in high school. I have been a member of the Pinnacle Quilters of San Benito County since it was in its beginning stages. I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the charter founders and members when it was being planned. What is (or was) your day job? My "day job" was Deputy County Recorder for the county of San Benito (for 13 years). What is your earliest "quilt" memory? I remember my paternal grandmother coming to visit us and she would always go through my Mom s scrap bag for pieces she could incorporate into another quilt. Tell me about the first quilt you made? I think I made my first quilt in about it was a crazy quilt and was baby-sized, for my nephew. By the way, I am in the process of replacing a few of the crazy patches in this quilt due to wear. My nephew will be 43 next October! Do you work from patterns or do you design your own quilts? I mostly work from patterns. But am always "doodling" if something catches my attention and I don't necessarily like the whole pattern. I have done one of my own design --- it was a guild challenge a few years ago. I won the challenge that month, I was very pleased. What is your favorite quilting technique? I think my favorite method of piecing is by machine; I get impatient to see the finished product!! Are you a "one project" gal or do you have many projects going at once? Usually, I have more than one project going at a time. I recently sat down & wrote out by category, what I have fabric for, what stage it is in, & approximately when I may get to it. I was totally flabbergasted to discover that I have fabric enough for 73 projects! What do you like most and least about quilting? Color, design, selecting fabric --- these are the most enjoyable aspects of quilting to me. I enjoy binding the quilt, it is relaxing for me. My least favorite thing is the tedious task of putting the whole thing together. Sometimes I wish I could wiggle my nose like Samantha the Witch and the quilt would be all together & ready to quilt & bind!!! Do you have a quilt experience you would like to brag about? I have been sewing since I was ten years old; started in 4H with a 30-minute apron and progressed to entering the Monterey County Fair each year until I matured out of 4H. I still have scraps from the first shirtwaist dress I entered in the MCF, which took a 1st place ribbon! I was so proud of that ribbon! Have you had any quilting heartbreaks? Sadly, I had to sell my first Featherweight after I was newly married because we had car trouble & needed the $$$$. I have since purchased another Featherweight from John & Janet Locey and it is my special machine. Lastly, why do you quilt? I believe as a quilter I am a creator of memories and hope that those who have been gifted with one of my quilts will remember me fondly each time they see/use the gift. Page 6 of 11
