1 June 2017, VOL. 14, Issue 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello, fellow quilters! It is graduation time again and if you have a graduate, I know you are extremely busy with all sorts of preparations --- like parties, who gets to attend the graduation ceremony, what sort of gift to give your graduate (or graduates in the "family & friends" circle). Have you thought of a wallhanging or a quilt as a gift? There is still time, there are lots of fast, easy patterns out there. Maybe a t-shirt quilt, utilizing the many, many tshirts your graduate has accumulated over the four years of high school. I made my oldest granddaughter a t-shirt quilt 3 years ago, to take to college with her. She was very particular about which t-shirts I was allowed to use --- she lettered in volleyball, soccer, softball and basketball, along with marching band and symphony band, so she had an abundance of shirts to choose from. Seemed like every sport had multiple shirts, so each of her chosen sports was represented in her quilt. It took me some time to assemble, but I was pleased with the finished quilt in the end. She loves it and it is on her bed at college all year! She will be a senior in college and will graduate in May 2018; then, four more years of grad school to become a veterinarian. We are so proud of her! Enough bragging, on to other items. As a guild, we have pledged ourselves to make, donate & deliver at least (30) thirty quilts for our Quilts of Honor program this year. They will be presented at our County Fair on Saturday, September 30th, Irene Towler & Jeanette Perdue cut fabrics for twenty-five (25) kits, to be assembled into Quilts of Honor for our Veterans. As far as I know, all kits have been distributed, but contact Irene if you would like to help in any way. I have one in progress, and put the binding on another last week. It is my understanding that 5-8 more Quilts of Honor nominations were turned in at the May meeting -- most, if not all of these nominations are WWII Veterans. If your Veteran is on the list, be assured that if they don't receive a quilt this year, they go to the top of the list for next year. Remember, these WWII Veterans should take precedence & if you have a "special need", let Irene know well in advance. Our Veterans deserve these quilts, please help us if you have not already done so. We were pleased to welcome Linda Williams of Nimble Thimble and Laurie Perez of Quilts and Things to our Affiliate Night in May. They had lots of wonderful things, both have extensive lists of upcoming classes and many new items in their shops. They both reminded us about the upcoming "Shop Hop by the Bay", which runs from June 21st through June 25th. It piggybacks with this year's Row by Row Experience, which also begins on June 21st. Check them out, it is fun to visit the thirteen (13) different shops, check out different fabrics & notions, pick up a Row by Row pattern (or kit) and remember -- you can do the 13 shops on the weekend if your weekdays are committed to other activities (like work, ugh!!!) The Shop Hop is featuring a Mystery Quilt pattern this year which should be fun! All shops are open both Saturday & Sunday for your convenience. Please patronize our local shops -without us, they will not be there. Fun things coming up for our guild! June 20th is Roundabout Demo Night and Election night. We have six (6) demo volunteers! Demos will be reasonably short so the meeting won't run too long (in case you want to get an early start for the Shop Hop the following day). Please join us, have a great summer and KEEP QUILTING!!! 3 ********** UP-COMING EVENTS ********* June 2017 General Meeting Tuesday 6/20/2017 Social 6:30PM General 7PM The Veteran's Memorial Building, 649 San Benito Street, Hollister, CA -- Demo Night! -- Learn (or teach) a couple of new quilting skills from your fellow quild members. We are a talented bunch so this meeting is not to be missed! -- Quilt Guild Board Elections --- VOTE and consider volunteering for a position on the board to make a difference in your guild. We will also vote on the budget and by-law changes. At every meeting -- Shop at our Boutique, try your luck at our raffle baskets, and enjoy (or participate) in our "Show and Tell". Sign-up for our first Bi-Monthly Quilt Challenge -- Go to page 5 for more information! A hint -- let your imagination shine! Save the Date Saturday, July 1st -- Opportunity Quilt Raffle at Corbin Hollister Factory. Bring any outstanding proceeds and tickets to the June General Meeting. Tuesday, July Guild BBQ. Bring your spouse and enjoy some good food with your fellow quild members! Guest passes will be available for $5/person. GUILD OFFICERS -- Open positions: Tuesday, October 17th -- Guest speaker Mel Beach will give a trunk show and encourage you to "Challenge Yourself!". Donations/Baskets -- Manage donations of quilts/food items. Create fun raffle baskets. Boutique Co-Chairs -- Manage and run the fabric and notions boutique at the General Meeting. Volunteers will be trained! Unless we get volunteers, the boutique will go away and you will lose a great source for inexpensive quilting fabric and notions. See any board member if interested! 4 ******* Community Service ******** Serving the community through charitable activities involving quilting. Quilts for Chamberlains Children's Center We are always in need of twin size quilts for boys and girls at Chamberlains (should be at least 60" x 90") and crib size quilts for babies. If the quilt you donate can't fill the requests needed at this time it will be saved until a suitable home can be found for it. ***** Food Drive for Community Pantry Bring non-perishable food items to the Guild Meetings and you will receive one ticket toward the raffle basket of your choice. Community Pantry is struggling to fulfill the needs of those less fortunate in San Benito County. (One raffle ticket per Guild Member, please.) DONATIONS On-going Services ***** Donations of fabric and other quilting supplies are always welcome! We have raffle baskets available at each meeting -- buy a ticket or two and try your luck! Remember that a donation for Emmaus House (household items) will earn you a free ticket. You can also earn a free ticket with any donation of blocks, fabric, quilts or pillow cases for Quilts of Honor. Happy Quilting! Irene Towler Community News Our Opportunity Quilt has been well recieved by the community and lots of raffle tickets have been sold to suport the programs for our guild! It is now time to raffle it off! July 1st at 4pm at Corbin Hollister Factory 2360 Technology Parkway Please bring your sold tickets and money to our June meeting. We will have the quilt tickets at the meeting so you will still have a chance to buy tickets and win the quilt! Keep Quilting! Bev Hanagan, Community Liaison quilts of honor Join us in honoring members of our active military and veterans by showing them how much we appreciate their sacrifice and service with our Quilted Hugs of Gratitude. Our hope is that these quilts will provide comfort, love and healing to those who have given so much. We have pledged ourselves to make, donate, and deliver at least (30) thirty quilts this year! 5 ***** General Announcements ***** **** 2017 June-July Quilt Challenge **** Here Comes the Sun! In celebration of summer, our first Quilt Challenge will celebrate the sunny days of summer! Be literal or go totally abstract -just make sure the sun shines in your design! IMPORTANT DATES: June 13th -- Sign-up at the June meeting to choose your fat quarter and get all the details of the challenge. Entry fee is $5. One entry per member. August 15th -- Challenge quilts MUST be received by 7PM at the August meeting in order to be considered for a "Viewer's Choice" ribbon! Questions? Nimble Thimble 7455 Monterey Street Gilroy, California *** The Fabric Boutique -- Let's keep it going! *** For June, your Fabric Boutique will have lots of new fabric, lots of crochet thread, and a donated Kenmore sewing machine. The sewing machine weights 17.5 lbs. and would be great for taking to classes, for a beginner sewer. All money raised from the Boutique goes back into the guild for guild programs and events. Unless someone volunteers, this June meeting will be the LAST for the Fabric Boutique. Bradwyn (2 years) and I (5+ years) will be taking a break. 6 *** Proposted Change to Guild By-Laws *** The Pinnacle Quilt Guild By-Laws Review Committee recommends the following addition to By-Laws Article VI, Section 6, Item H-4 to include "and 2 (two) guest passes." Thus, this article shall now read "Shall provide new members with copies by-laws, membership roster, membership card, and 2 (two) guest passes." ******* JUST FOR FUN ******* -- quiting acronym of the month -- PIGS = Projects In Grocery Sacks Usage: "Yesterday I noticed my house is overrun with PIGS!" 7 The Quilter's Last Will and Testament* I,, being of sound mind (a statement which does not bear close examination) do hereby record my last will and testament. Knowing that, my (husband, sister, or friend) hasn't the least understanding or appreciation for, or for that matter, knowledge of my extensive fabric collection, which collection is suitably deposited in the sundry places for safekeeping. Knowing also that has already notified the local dumpster to pick up and dispose of the before mentioned collection "willy-nilly" (the thought of which causes me a most severe case of the hives). Therefore, I do will this collection and all other collections related to it, to my dear friend and fellow fabric preservationist,. It is my wish that she/he, upon hearing of my death and obtaining clear proof that I did not manage, although goodness knows I tried, to take it with me, would come to my home post haste, before the dumpster, and search out my collection which is similarly stored at her own abode. That she/he should rescue said collection and stack it in my quilting studio, along with my sewing machines, frames, old buttons, lace, patterns, quilts, dolls and works in progress. After she/he has done this, she/he should purchase refreshments for my friends not yet departed, which friends are also her/his friends, and every last one shall be in that room and they shall hold a wake and say lovely and kind things about me until they run out of said refreshments and then they shall divide amongst themselves, by lot, my wonderful collection. I shall be hovering over the very spot until it is done. shall then quit this spot and close the door, leaving trivialities to those who do not understand. This is my wish on the matter.
