2 Agenda Understanding why some trades may lack BIM capability and what can be done to integrate them into a collaborative environment. Hearing how inaccurate models or post-fabrication design changes can cause distrust of BIM and how to re-engage those contractors. Revealing the best practices in BIM for Multi-trade prefabrication: what further efficiencies can teams make?

3 Budget for BIM Review CD set, specifications, square footage, BIM XP, schedule, use cases and level of development. Generate the estimate and include in the bid. Don t depend on securing budget after the contract has already been awarded. Build the model per the CD set and secure additional budget when a change occurs in the CD set. Tie the budget to specific tasks and monitor Refine Scope at Project Kick-off Set expectations with your internal team and align with the expectations with the GC and the rest of the trades. Building Information Model Include code and installation clearances Include flanges, insulation and other elements that will need space Include hangers Model everything that you care about. If it isn t in the model you may need to tear it out and re-install it.

4 Building Information Model cont d Model equipment to the submittal specifications Model the equipment and review with the superintendent and manufacturing. Include the information in the model that will be necessary for manufacturing and installation. If your location or route is waiting on approval model an alternative option too. Coordination Do your own coordination between coordination meetings. Do not rely only on the GC to identify clashes and installation clearances Create allies and good cooperative working relationships with the other trades. Demand formal sign-offs Secure copy of the federated model at sign off Be leery of conditional sign-offs Shop Drawings Identify the use case for your shops. If they are going to be utilized for installation include all of the information in your model elements as you build it. Going back after the fact is inefficient and burns budget. Tie the shops to a system that will control the revisions for the field

5 Manufacturing and Installation Through out the BIM process tie the field and manufacturing together Identify the technology that the field is using and tie it to the to the technology that is used to develop the building information model Bluebeam PlanGrid ERP Navisworks Revit AutoCAD and other 3 rd party applications Leica Total Station Total Station Electronic Points Include points in families/blocks Build a process to get the points from the model to the total station in the field Include the points in the field model Model and coordinate sleeves and all other slab penetrations to avoid labor and perishable tools required for coring. Prefab Use the BIM to prefab underground stub ups, panel racks, feeder and sleeve assemblies, headwalls and devices for typical rooms.
