How technology is changing the way we deliver Structural Steelwork Brenden Picton Phil Shanks
Presentation Outline Project Introduction & Process Description From the Engineers Perspective From the Detailers Perspective From the Client & Contractors Perspective
Project Introduction GHD was engaged to provide Architectural and Engineering services for an Art Gallery / Interpretative Centre for Fraser Coast Regional Council. The building consists of a braced steel frame with some tilt panels, large glazing windows and twisting soffits. The construction time on the project is unrealistic, so to save time, we undertook a delivery method by which we engaged Jackson Roxborough in the design phase to shorten the lead time on the structural steel
Fraser Coast Cultural Centre
The Process The Revit model was set up like all other models within GHD with all disciplines working on 1 central file. The Architects set up the initial model with the Structural team modelling the Structural Components (Columns, Framing, Foundations) Once the structure had been completed, the model was then transferred to Tekla using the Tekla Exporter in Revit. The result is an.ifc file which JR imported directly into Tekla along with all the sizes and spatial arrangement. Once transferred in Tekla, JR connected all the structural elements using design provided by GHD through the use of DWF files.
The Process JR then provided an.ifc file back to GHD with all the connections added. This file was then imported into Revit and then exported into Navisworks and connections were checked for clashes with other disciplines. This process was repeated several times over the course of the project.
From the Engineers Perspective Brenden Picton
From the Engineers Perspective Limitations Deliverables Benefits Downsides Other things to consider
From the Engineers Perspective. Limitations Tekla doesn t like the Shared Coordinate system. Grids don t transfer across Conversion of the IFC export from Tekla to Revit makes for a big file (200Mb) IFC file isn t an update from the previous file, it s a brand new file Round objects don t appear the same Structural Connections don t transfer across seamlessly Bolt size didn t transfer across
From the Engineers Perspective. Deliverables Tender: Plans, Elevations & Sections (GHD) BOQ (Jackson Roxborough) A copy of the Steel detailers model was provided to tenderers Construction (Contract Award) Plans, Elevations & Sections (GHD) No detail connection drawings were created 500+ Fabrication drawings (Jackson Roxborough)
From the Engineers Perspective. Benefits Less Documentation time Coordination of the steel detailing model happens during the design phase and highlights areas of concern earlier in the project phase We review a model rather then interpret drawings and it can be coordinated with other design disciplines Allows for Steel detailer to provide input into the design
From the Engineers Perspective.
From the Engineers Perspective. Downsides A little more care is required for the modelling of elements Time saved in less documentation is taken up in model management QA procedure is brought forward before the model is sent to the detailer The building design has to be frozen prior to sending to the detailers
From the Engineers Perspective. Other things to consider.. This only works if everyone is comfortable in a model environment Setup export views in Revit for both Tekla and Navisworks Communication is the key. The more you can do via the model the better (live Revit Model) The more information you can give to the detailer, the better! Don t attempt this on your first Revit project Once drawings are created in Tekla, the process of change is a costly one.
From the Detailers Perspective Philip Shanks
From the detailers perspective The Project The Detailing Process IFC File Conversion to Tekla Connection Design Revision Control Tekla Improvements A number of points to consider, hopefully will be answered by this demonstration: Is this a paradigm shift? Why do some of us want to see 3D models as a design medium? Who benefits? What are the risks? Where are the savings? What are the pros and cons? Is this process gaining ground?
The Project A real project with targets A process adopted and accepted to be used on this project No design drawings as in hard copy format GHD system of using DWF files for connection design
The Detailing Process How do we receive the model?
The Detailing Process Filtering the IFC file Production Steelwork
IFC file conversion to Tekla Profile and material mapping Build a library on the run Simple conversion process select and process
Connection Design Tags applied to members showing connection intent DWF viewer is free communication process a t no added cost
Revision Control IFC Revision Control
Connection Design Connected Steel Detailing Model
Tekla Improvements Export IFC for Design Review more advanced - Property set definitions allow Detailer to populate IFC export file with additional model data. - Data can be added to steelwork for design review purposes - Data can be added to bolts for design review purposes - Both Steelwork and bolts can be scrutinised in the IFC output file - Use Navisworks for review?
Tekla Improvements IFC Change Management System still in Beta phase.
In closing From a Detailer s perspective Why do this? Economy is driving Tech Innovation Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) - Early Engagement Preservation of data Data flow Economy for project Shop dwgs ready at time of award Pros and Cons
From the Client & Contractors Perspective
From the Client & Contractors Perspective. Client: Benefits Decreased Construction time A more refined price on steel with no chance of variation between Tender and Construction Downsides Upfront cost implications if the project doesn t proceed past design
From the Client & Contractors Perspective. Contractor: Increased efficiency..structural steel is on the critical path now and thanks to the design value of having shop drawings approved as part of contract documents we are ready to erect at least 60% of structure. Typical design process with Build only contract. Based on executing contract date of and then Sub contract procurement and letting of Structural steel supply and install package. PBS would of only have 90% of shop drawings complete and estimate around 60% approved by Client and at the best only 10% manufactured if lucky. So the benefits of completing the shop drawings up front will be a considerable factor on mitigating delays. (Wayne Ahrens, PBS)
