We will help owners and their AEC consultants answer three key questions: what data do I need, who is going to use it and how will I maintain it? We will also examine tools designed to help owners access and utilize this data to operate their portfolio more efficiently. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS BERT JONES is responsible for all capital outlay construction for the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). He and his staff provide technical and administrative support for all activities related to facilities and construction at 23 colleges with 40 campuses. Prior to VCCS Mr. Jones served as the Director of Engineering and Building for the Department of General Services where he was the state building official. In that role he was responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of over 6.5 milliom sq. ft. of buildings and parking facilities. For more than ten years, JEFF VAN FLEET has worked to provide services and solutions to a wide variety of including government, higher education, healthcare and corporate markets. It is critical that any data that is produced during the design and construction process be able to be utilized by the maintenance staff that will ultimately be responsible for the building If the data is not easily accessible it WILL NOT be used Remember the maintenance staff are not, for the most part, computer whizzes. The PM work order format for the worker should include all data necessary for them to go to the location, with the right tools and supplies and do the work. Several trips back and forth are not productive. This is not and should not be rocket science It is building maintenance. Follow the KISS principle. Keep it Simple Stupid or it will not get done. 5

8 Know your FM system Once you have decided how to use the data, you need to know what data your system needs to produce the desired results Know what your design/construction team can deliver The AEC teams level of BIM sophistication will greatly impact their ability to deliver the data you have asked for Does someone else have data you need PeopleSoft, SAP, BAS, etc. Define responsibility Define who will be responsible for gathering the information and hold them accountable Don t gather more data than you are willing and able to maintain. For new buildings, the data should be directly downloadable into a CMMS and a building information databases. Anything that requires double and triple keying is wasting time. We have technology, we should be able to use it to simplify our workers lives not make it more complicated The data that is collected and transferred must be the important data. Transferring Gigs of data that is of no use for maintenance and operation just creates confusion as it must be sifted through to find the important stuff Technology should be easily cross-connectable. Yes, even between competitors. As the Owner, to have to spend money for expensive crosswalks makes me crazy.
