3 Context of the research activity New construction or renovation projects need customization (will be enhanced if customized) with owners and involved contractors and professionals capabilities and management attitudes: their workflow, as well as the information exchanges among them are often very different; used design tools, as well as building technologies must be updated, or made flexible, to be optimized for every specific building and retrofit project organization. At one end of the spectrum there are big scale projects realized by large group of contractors (or a vertically integrated big firms) using state-of-the art tools and softwares; at the other end, there are entry-level workflows and technologies, small scale renovation works by smaller or individual contractors, barely using digital equipment, with low tech, traditional craft and human intensive works, unable to access top grade technologies because of cost and training requirements, often struggling for surviving in a non-innovative and low-cost bidder environment. The PhD will work toward the optimization and customization of work flows and applied technologies to the specific market segment of schools (across their various types)., in the framework of BIM4REN, a H2020 project ( Innovative & accessible BIM tools for all the building renovation value chain ).

4 Motivation and objectives of the research The PhD research is about the renovation of educational built assets its retrofit, in terms of energy efficiency, seismic vulnerability and other hard, building envelope and building services performances, and in terms of effectiveness. Its objective is the development of digital driven collaborative workflows and work process models for school building retrofit and management across their entire life cycle. The workflow will integrate and propose commercial and open technologies to assess the cost and benefit of the applied design and aims to automate and simplify the application of sustainability metrics protocols and other performances for the assessment of the effectiveness of a renovation strategy, during the entire life-cycle of the renovated building (e.g. operation and management) The Candidate will test BIM4REN project deliverables (BIM Bots, in particular for the USGBC LEED for Schools protocol). The PhD work will give to the project an occasion to go beyond commercial environmental protocols and confront their results with wide and deep analysis at a life cycle assessment scale.

5 Educational objectives and skills that the Candidate will develop The candidate will develop skills and be directly exposed to experts in: Construction processes Retrofitting Digitalization Energy Simulation Facility Management Environmental Impact Assessment metrics Business models and market analysis Sustainability protocols Digital twins An interesting part of the studies will be the opportunity to compare and contrast two build-ings of the Venice school retrofit where in one building innovative construction processes and technologies will be applied and in another building where they are not. Publication opportu-nities are foreseen..

6 Methodologies and research plan The methodology and activity plan for the PhD candidate will closely mirror BIM4REM work plan and expand its scope to include the full construction life-cycle, while narrowing its focus to the school market segment (building type and actors working upon them). The various technologies are to be aligned into a one-stop access platform that make available and help navigate for users data collection services, design services, BIM, monitoring & reporting and facility management.

7 Job opportunities The PhD has the direct likelihood of leading to a staff member position within R2M Solution with the intent to help the company target public buildings and in specific schools for retrofits and new build where NZEB and Decreto BIM are requirements. R2M has recently founded an ESCO with the direct intent of targeting innovative NZEB retrofits. Moreover, this specific doctoral program will provide the candidate with good theoretical and practical background in managing interdisciplinary teams and construction projects and a digital tools proficiency that will be very attractive for job positions in public institutions, contractor as well as engineering and architectural firms, as well as in University teaching, in particular, for practical digital skill transfer.
