7 PhD in INGEGNERIA MECCANICA / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Area n. 3 - Engineering Design and Manufacturing for the Industry of the Future Research Field: DESIGN, PROCESSING AND QUALIFICATION OF 4D SMA STENTS DIRECTLY MANUFACTURED BY ADDITIVE PROCESSES Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Interdisciplinary PhD Grant The PhD research will be carried out in collaboration with research groups of the PhD programme in "STRUCTURAL SEISMIC AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING". See for further information. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Additive manufacturing opens new opportunities to the personalization of SMA Ni-Ti vascular stents, e.g. new design of complex and biomorphic shapes, 4D printing, new tailored materials with gradient composition or surfaces with peculiar topography, respectively. However, producing stents directly by selective laser melting (SLM) poses challenging issues in terms of miniaturization, mechanical properties and surface functionality. Aim of the research is to investigate from a design and manufacturing perspective how actual limits of the additive processes can be overcome and personalized stents with target shape/surface/performances can be obtained, through a priori knowledge (process and product modelling) and in line process monitoring and control, enabling significant progress in the research, clinical care, and policy to improve the patient life quality. 1 / 4
8 Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research The two interdisciplinary areas involved in the proposal are: 1) CAD/FEA design/simulation 2) new manufacturing methods throughout metal additive processes (SLM).The main methods in carrying out this research will be: Mechanical design and optimization of the 4D stent structure as a function of mechanical performances and peculiarities of SLM (through CAD and FEA); Design and definition of new SLM methods of producing smart 4D miniaturized stents with the target shape, surface topography, tailored mechanical and biological properties; SLM process sensing, monitoring and control as well as stents inspection and qualification with x-ray tomography as key factors to achieve sustainable zero-defect manufacturing. This PhD thesis is funded by Politecnico di Milano as a co supervised Interdoctoral thesis, with a double supervision of the PhD candidate provided by two different doctoral programmes, specifically the Doctoral Programme in Mechanical Engineering and the Doctoral Programme in Structural Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering. Educational objectives Strong multi-disciplinary training by integrating skills and competences in stent design, Ni-Ti device computational modelling and performance testing (Dept. of Civil and Environment Engineering) together with competences in new additive processes development, sensing and monitoring (Mechanical Engineering Dept.). 18 PhD in INGEGNERIA MECCANICA / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Area n. 3 - Engineering Design and Manufacturing for the Industry of the Future Research Field: SENSORS, MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES, BIG DATA AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR INDUSTRY 4.0 Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field The availability of low cost sensors has changed our world. The IoT increasingly affect the way with which people interact with objects, and industries are facing a significant change within the 4 th industrial revolution. The vision of Industry 4.0 evidences new requirements for sensors and data processing. Machines learning and artificial intelligence are the key to grant a more flexible production, faster times and effective processes.this PhD thesis will aim at producing novel measurement systems and techniques for MSME, compliant with the paradigms of Industry 4.0, i.e.: 1.Full process automation, predictive maintenance; 2. Acquisition of huge amount of data, that cannot be typically analyzed using standard techniques; 3.Cloud monitoring and networked machines; 4.Artificial intelligence and machine learning. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research From one side the availability of new low cost sensors challenges the design of new monitoring systems od machines and even more of production plants. On the other side, traditional data analysis techniques fails to cope with the advent of IoT and the generation of huge 1 / 4
19 amounts of structured or unstructured data. Big data analysis requires new technologies to cope with traditional analytics.the skills that will be provided therefore start from a deep knowledge of sensors and of embedded systems. Big data analysis knowledge will be built on the top of it, developing programming skills, as well as experience with relational and non -relational databases. The candidate will work in cooperation with industries based in the Lecco province, in order to develop innovative measurement techniques and data analysis procedures for next-generation machineries. Educational objectives The candidate, at the end of the PhD programme, will be able to design industry 4.0 compliant systems. The PhD will have skills typical of data scientists, with a strong mechanical engineering background. The multidisciplinary approach will be pursued with an interdepartmental programme focused on the request of SME. According to Forbes, the net salary of big data scientists, before bonuses and compensation, exceeds 100?000 $/year. The skills developed during the PhD programme allow the candidate to work in any R&D department of companies designing and manufacturing machines. The recent PhD candidates have found positions in different sectors, ranging from machines manufacturing to Rolls Royce, as well as foreign universities or research centers.
