5 About BIM and OpenBIM

6 What is BIM/openBIM? There is not really a clear consensus of what BIM is Many presentations still includes a What is BIM -section Most common perception of people is that BIM is a software or a process, a model,... The One that I like is: BIM is a Technology that enables transition from human readable data to machine readable data Drawings are graphics (appearance important) BIM data consists of objects that contain geometry and attribute information (structure important)

7 What is BIM/openBIM In BIM/openBIM we have a possibility to: Choose the tools for our needs Transfer data between tools by utilizing Digital Workflow in the lifecycle Develop very specific tools independent of any platform Use open standard data formats (IFC, CityGML, LandXML, ) for communication So, for me today s BIM means that it is always also open for digital data flow

10 Standards Development is not easy, Without saying anything about implementing or taking them into use in real-life project work But it is extremely important!!! Requires collaboration on a global basis Requires consensus by many organizations Requires give and take Requires certified, repeatable process But in any case, there s many of them going on

11 To Manage the Whole Lifecycle Information Requires Interaction with Multiple Stakeholders & Datasources In Sweden IFC alignment is a requirement from construction Has anyone ever estimated the annual cost / potential of lacking interoperability in and between BIM and GIS on the global level? IFC is used by Norwegian & Finnish Road Authorities in Bridge management CityGML & InfraGML based data provides important source information for Civil projects InfraGML 1.0 * has recently been published and work on 2.0 is starting *InfraGML is one of Landinfra encodings Terrain models & Machine Control data is often in LandXML files

We see a change in the mindset: from a project oriented BIM, where the model is created for one project to Enterprise BIM, a business centric model what is kept alive and updated continuously to be the Digital Twin of the physical thing like the whole or a part of road network The digital twin can use real-time data and other data-sources to enable learning, reasoning, and better decision making
