2013 McGraw-Hill Business Value of BIM: WHAT IS BIM? Geometry + Data = BIM Essentially 2
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING INFORMATION MODEL The model contains all the information and generates all the drawings VIEWING THE MODEL 3
MODEL (ONE OR MANY FILES) CONTAINS EVERYTHING GENERATES THE DRAWINGS 4
GENERATES EVERY VIEW GENERATES ANY STYLE GENERATES CONTRACT DOCUMENTS 5
SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE COLOURED SECTION / ELEVATION WORKING DRAWING 6
MYTH EVERYTHING IS IN 3D A construction detail typically starts with a detail view from the model, which consists of the basic materials & geometry of the wall assembly. MYTH EVERYTHING IS IN 3D 2D line work is applied over the basic geometry, clarifying some of the less-defined elements and adding finer details not present in the model. MYTH EVERYTHING IS IN 3D Finally, dimensions & annotations are added to complete the construction detail. 7
MAA BIM SUBCOMMITTEE: BIM MYTHS: 1) Everything is in 3D. 2) BIM is one model. 3) BIM will do all my coordination for me. 4) BIM will make me more efficient. 5) The Technological Factor is more important than the Human Factor Large-Scale Value Clash Detection Constructability Review Analysis Fabrication Operations / Asset Mgmt Cost Estimating Modeling & Design Visualization Procurement Health/Safety Planning Scheduling / Programming Drawings & Schedules Specifications This is what you can do with BIM. (Defined as BIM GOALS in the Penn State BIM Execution Plan). The Wheel of BIM 8

PLAN (maybe 12 clicks): 1) DRAW THE FRAME 2) COPY THE FRAME 3) DRAW THE LEAF 4) DRAW THE SWING ELEVATION (maybe 14 clicks): 1) DRAW THE FRAME 2) DRAW THE LEAF 3) DRAW THE DOOR 4) DRAW THE SWING The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) What did we do in 2D? SECTION (maybe 8 clicks): SPECIFICATION: 1) DRAW THE CUT FRAME 2) DRAW THE CUT LEAF 3) DRAW THE FRAME IN ELEV SCHEDULE (Word doc or drawn in CAD): The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) 11
How did we make 2D better? Creation of standardized cells / blocks to reduce the 34 mouse clicks Library of content to just place on drawings Updating of content could be applied to an entire file Master specifications doors / door hardware Standardized schedules The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) How does BIM make it better? Door placed parametrically (cutting holes in walls as well) (2-4 clicks) Parametrics allow for control of glass, frames, rough opening, etc. The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) How does BIM make it better? Graphically door is placed in 3D, so one placement applies for plan, section and elevation Materials assigned to door for rendering / visualization The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) 12
How does BIM make it better? Schedule information added to the door component Schedule information seen live interactively with the model The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) How does BIM make it better? Classification metadata attached to all components to provide a linkage to specifications Tools like SPECWAVE can look into the model, scan components, view the Classification field, and then harvest the required specifications for the project The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) How does BIM make it better? Place the component once, utilize it for visualization, plans, sections, elevations, schedules and specifications Parametric data allows for easy updating of geometry and data Confidence that everything modeled will appear in the schedule no more missing a door The Story Of A Door (encore from RAIC 2012) 13

Different tools, different styles, different effects, same goal: Review of Tool Similarities 15
Revit: Floor elevations defined within the tools Components placed within the defined floor elevations If elevations on the project change, components and relationships will change accordingly This only works if consideration is given up-front to define floor elevations Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Levels Walls can be generic or compound (made if of various material layers) Walls automatically join and mitre Walls carry automatic hatching for 2D representation Revit: Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Walls Floors can be generic or made up of multiple material layers. Floors can be structural or architectural. Floors can FLOOD within walls and thus when walls move, the floors adjust to suit. Revit: Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Floors 16
Doors are parametric so data entries affect dimensional values. Doors carry data which can be utilized for door schedule generation. Doors automatically punch holes in walls and become associated to the walls they are inserted into. Revit: Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Doors Windows / Louvers are parametric so data entries affect dimensional values. Windows / Louvers carry data which can be utilized for door schedule generation. Windows / Louvers automatically punch holes in walls and become associated to the walls they are inserted into. Revit: Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Windows / Openings Revit: Curtain Walls are parametric so data entries affect dimensional values. Curtain Walls carry data which can be utilized for door schedule generation. Curtain Walls automatically punch holes in walls and become associated to the walls they are inserted into. Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Curtain Walls 17
Revit: Roofs FLOOD the top of a structure and become associated to the walls they sit on. As the structure moves, the roof adjusts accordingly. Roof slopes, shapes and overhangs are parametric and thus can be adjusted by entering desired values. Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Roofs Revit: Stairs are parametric and created based on dimensional constraints Railings are associated to the stringers of stairs and dynamically adjust with the stair Bentley: Revit / AECOsim Stairs & Railings Drawings can be created dynamically within both applications, so when the model adjusts, the drawing automatically do as well. Static representations are also possible Export from Revit to AutoCAD, or use Extractions within AECOsim. Revit: Bentley: Revit / AECOsim View Creation (Dynamic) 18
