December 2-5, 2003 MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas Autodesk Revit : Burning CDs That Even Your Contractor Can Use Speaker: Assistants: Paul Francis Loreto, AAC, OAA, MRAIC Clyne Curtis Peter Funk Course ID: BD43-1L Course Description This session will teach you how to bridge the gap between the design process and the development of construction documentation. You will learn how to implement your legacy DWG and DGN files into any Autodesk Revit project. About the Speaker: Paul Francis Loreto is the president of Paul F. Loreto Architect Inc. a diverse architectural design firm located in London, Ontario, Canada. The firm s portfolio includes both commercial and industrial projects and is known to be the first architectural design firm in Canada to use Autodesk Revit as the only software in its practice, having implementing Autodesk Revit into his practice in June Paul is also the president of Loreto Design Consultants, the first Autodesk Authorized Consultant / Revit Specialist in North America having obtained the designation as a Revit Solutions Provider from Revit Technologies in May, Paul brings to his clientele his clear understanding of the requirements and concerns of operating an active architectural company along with his real world AEC experience of how Autodesk Revit s parametric modeling capabilities can be used to realize time and cost-savings throughout each stage of a project. Course Outline: 1) Topic One: User Interface: Right Click Menus, Primary User Interface and Design Bars 2) Topic Two: Parametric Building Elements: Walls, Doors, Windows, Ceilings Floors, Ceilings & General Components 3) Topic Three: Detailing The View and Adding Detail Components 4) Topic Four: Creating Drafting Views and Importing DWG Files 5) Topic Five: Filling The Document Sheet
Topic One: Using Model Geometry The development of all Autodesk Revit projects are achieved through the use of parametric model geometry such as walls, windows, floors, roofs, etc. and the Detail Level in which these element s properties are to be viewed. When a building in its simplest form has been developed during the design stage, each modeled element used possess elemental properties which not only shows the 3D design feature of the element but also the 2D lined drafting representation of the wall s individual components. It is this characteristic that enables a project s Model Geometry to be used to transform from the Design Phase of a project into Construction Documentation in a moments time The most evident example of this is shown in the First Floor Level View below of a one-storey building using a simple wall construction. When the Detail Level of this Floor Level has been set to Course, the walls show up as a two-lined drawing. Floor Plan Level One Detail Level Level Set Set To Course To Course with with Corresponding Wall Section Wall The transformation of design drawing to construction document occurs once the Detail Setting has been set to Fine which then shows all of the wall components within the wall as a 2D drawing. As shown below, the same compound wall with the Detail Level found within the Section View s Element Properties being set at Fine and the Scale Value set at ¾ =1-0, now shows the total construction of the wall, which can be further enhanced to create part of the Details used for your Contract Documentation. Detail Level Set To FINE With Corresponding Wall Section 2
Topic Two: Creating Section Views and Callout Views Creating Sections in Plan View is the first step towards developing a strong set of Construction Documents. While the plan views show relationships between elements in 2D, it is the Sections and Call Out Details that show how these elements relate to each other in both 2D and 3D. By showing proper building sections in conjunction with their corresponding Call Out Detail, it is no surprise that the construction of a particular component can be clearly display and the design intent maintained. Good detailing reduces errors in interpretation of what is required to be built and therefore saves money on the construction site. Creating Section Views From the View tab of the Design Bar pick Section and draw the section line on the floor plan where the desired section is to be taken. Note that the first point / click indicates where the section head will be set and the last click indicates where the tail end of the section line is to be. Should you wish to change the tail into another head, then choose Modify and highlight the section line. From the Options bar, choose Properties to open the Element Properties Dialogue Box. You will add a tail and set the display of the section line to include a gap in the segment. From the End2 mark drop-down list, select Tail. Place a check mark in the Gaps in segments check box and choose OK. The section line should now resemble the image below. Section Properties With Defined Parameters And Its Corresponding View. To view the corresponding section, simply double click on the section arrowhead and the corresponding section view will open. Creating Callout Views While in an open section view from the View tab of the Design Bar choose Callout. From the Options Bar, set the Scale to 1 ½ = 1-0. Create a callout around the left side of the foundation sill by dragging a rectangle around it. To reposition the callout head, choose Modify and select the border of the callout. The callout view will highlight and display drag handles. Select the callout drag handle and move the head to the bottom left side of the view as a shown in the image below. 3
Callout Drag Callout Head Relocated Callout Placement Select Modify and double-click the callout head. Once the callout head view is open, choose View Properties from View Menu and change the View Name to Wall Sill Plate. Topic Three: Detailing The View and Adding Detail Components Once a detail view has been created, you can now begin to enhance the model geometry through a number of different methods. The first method we shall explore is the detailing of the view through the use of Filled Regions and by adding Detail Components. Filled Regions: The use of Filled Regions allows the user to create different 2D patterns for specific representation of items being documented. In this example, we are going to use Filled Regions to represent the sloped grade at the foundation wall s edge. To create the sloped grade, from the Drafting tab of the Design Bar, choose Filled Region, which will place you into Sketch Mode. Once in Sketch Mode, from the Design Bar pick Lines. From the Type Selector drop down list that is located at the top left of your screen pick Wide Lines and begin to sketch the boundaries as shown in the illustration below. Detail at Slope Grade and Wall Detail in Sketch Mode 4
Once the sketched boundary has been completed, pick Region Properties form the Design Bar. Click Edit / New to access the Type Properties. Select Duplicate to create a new Fill Pattern Type. Name the new type Earth and click OK. Detail at Slope Grade and Wall Element Properties- Select Edit/New Duplicate Elemental Properties top Create New Earth Filled Region Detail Components: The use of Detailed Components is crucial to developing section details and plan details of a project. Detailed Components are used only when 2D representation of a specific object is required. Detailed Components enhance construction documentation details by providing exact dimensions of various construction elements to the geometric model. In this section of the training, we will begin to add Detailed Components such as Dimensional Lumber, Plywood Flooring and Wall Board, Anchor Bolts, Insulation, and Gypsum Board. From the Drafting tab of the Design Bar, click Detail Component. Select Load from Library from the Options Bar. Open the folder Detail Components\Structural\Wood and choose the file, Dimensional Lumber-Section.rfa. Choose Open to load the family. From the Type Selector, choose Dimensional Lumber-Section: 2 x 10. Place the 2 x 10 Lumber as shown in the image below. Section Detail 2 x 10 Dimensional Lumber Added Detailed Components Menu and Type Selector 5
Now repeat the same similar steps to add both a 2 x 4 dimensional lumber to the detail and by opening the folder Detail Components\ Plywood select the plywood component and place it above the last 2x10 added to the geometric model as shown below: Detailed Components Plywood Added By using similar instructions, we will now begin adding Detailed Components such as anchor bolts, lap siding, and interior gypsum board wall finishes. To add the anchor bolt, click Detailed Component and select anchor bolt from the Type Selector. Place the component similar to the image below. Detailed Components Anchor Bolt Added The final detail component will be added and then arrayed. Click Detail Component and select Lap Siding from the Type Selector. Place the siding against the plywood on the exterior face of the wall. To create the rest of the siding, choose Modify and select the siding component. From the Edit menu choose Array and from the Options Bar, set the Number of Items to 4. (Remember that Creating an Array is a two-click process. The first click establishes the location of the component s array reference point. The second click establishes where that point will be arrayed.) Using the image below as a guide, click first on the bottom-right endpoint of the Lap Siding. The second click should be at the topmost point of the Lap Siding component. Immediately after the second click, the numbers of arrays will appear and you have the opportunity to edit it. Make sure the number of arrayed components is set to 4 and press <Enter> on the keyboard. 6
Detailed Components Lap Siding Added Detailed Components Lap Siding Arrayed Completed the Detail: Adding the final required elements including, insulation, Filled Region as gypsum board and the use of Detailed Lines can complete the detail. To add insulation, from the Drafting tab click Insulation. From the Options Bar enter in the Width of 0-3 and an Offset of 0-1 ½ to center. Starting at the top of the inside edge of the plywood detail component, sketch the insulation as shown below. Enhancing The Detail Rigid Insulation Added 7
Detail Lines: Detail Lines are 2D lines that can be used to illustrate complete components or individual elements of components such as a vapour barrier and / or elements found in the background. For this example we will use Detail Lines to draw the vapour barrier, the finished floor material, a base board and the wood floor joist sitting on the 2 x 10 blocking. To create the finished floor material, a baseboard and the wood joist, from the Drafting tab click Detail Lines. From the Type Selector pick Medium Lines. Draw a line from the inside edge of the 2 x 10 vertical dimensional lumber towards the right hand of the detail to create the wood joist. To create the baseboard and the finished floor material, select Medium Lines and draw the materials as shown in the picture below. Detailed Lines Added Creating the Vapour Barrier Line Type: Next you will add a detail line to represent a 5 mil vapour barrier. Before adding the line, you will create a new line style to represent the vapour barrier. From the Settings menu, choose Line Styles. Choose Create New and type the new line style name, Vapour Barrier and choose OK. Modify the Vapour Barrier s Line Weight to 3, Line Colour to Black and Line Pattern to Dash. Choose OK to complete the new line style. 8
From the Drafting tab of the Design Bar, Choose Detail Lines. From the Type Selector, choose Vapor Barrier from the drop-down list. Sketch a vertical line to represent the vapour barrier and place it ½ from the wall s interior face as shown in the image below. Enhancing the Detail - Vapour Barrier Added Completing The Construction Documentation Through the use of Filled Regions and Text we can complete the detail section to be placed on a standard sheet. From the Drafting tab, select Filled Region to be used to create the required gypsum board finish. Under Region Properties select Edit / New and then Duplicate calling the new Element Property Gypsum Board. Under the Fill Pattern type selector pick Gypsum Board (Drafting) and then OK Filled Pattern Menu and Fill Pattern Selection of Gypsum Board Material 9
Next, draw the boundaries of the Gypsum Board as shown on the picture below and click OK. Insulation Filled Pattern Sketch Mode Insulation Filled Pattern Completed From the Drafting tab pick Text. From the Type Selector choose 3/32 Text and document the drawing as shown below. Completed Detail Topic Four: Creating Drafting Views and Importing DWG Files From the View menu, select New, Drafting View. A dialog box will appear which will allow you to enter the View Name and the View Scale. Enter Rail Detail as the view name and from the View Scale drop-down list, select Custom. Enter 1:1 for the scale value. Choose OK. Next you will import a completed detail in DWG format. From the File menu, choose Import / Link, DWG, DXF, DGN. Navigate to the Training folder and choose Rail Detail.dwg. Choose the import option of, Preserve Colours. Select Open. The detail will initially come in as an Import Symbol. To modify an Import Symbol, it must be exploded. Once exploded, the DWG elements are converted into Autodesk Revit elements. Choose Modify and select the imported detail. Right-click the Import Symbol and select Explode Imported Instances from the popup menu. (You may get a warning that a line is too short. Choose Delete Element to explode the Import Symbol) 10
Importing And Exploding DWG Files Once exploded, the lines are converted into detail lines and text is converted in Autodesk Revit text. Notice that the text has retained the dwg layer colour. To increase readability, you will change the text colour to black and add text leaders. From the Design Bar, click Modify select all the text blocks. You can also select all the detail components and from the Options Bar, Select Filter to filter out everything except the notes. From the Type Selector drop-down list, choose Text: 3/32 text. Text Types Click Properties from the Design Bar. Click Edit / New and click Colour. Select black and click OK twice. Select the text note, Metal Stud Framing. From the Options Bar, choose the Add Left Leader option. Use the drag handles to place the leader as shown. Repeat this step for the remaining text as shown. Drafted Detail With Text Notes Added 11
Topic Five: Filling the Document Sheet Once the details and sections have all been assembled it is time to create the construction document sheet. From the View tab pick Sheet. From the Select a Title Block Menu choose Load \Titleblocks\22 x 34 and select OK. On the title block itself fill out all project information as required including the Project Name, Address, Drawing Title and Sheet Number. You will note that the scale of the drawing will be filled out once the views have been placed on the drawing sheet. Placing the Views On The Sheet Once the drawing sheet title block information has been completed all required views shall be place on the sheet. Simply highlight the required view from the Project Browser and drag and drop the view onto the designated sheet. In this case, from the Project Browser, click on Floor Level \ Level One and drag and drop onto Sheet A101 Training Sheet. Repeat this step to drag and drop Section 1, Section 1, and the Wall Section Sill Plate onto Sheet A101 Training Sheet. You will notice that once the drawing views have been placed on the sheet that the reference tags for the corresponding views have been filled in to correctly show where the views are to be located. It is this automatic coordination aspect of Autodesk Revit which makes this software save hours of manual coordination during the end of the construction administration process.
