3 TEC634 ARCHITECTURAL CAD I 3 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Students will explore architecture through residential planning and design. This course is appropriate for students in grades who are interested in pursuing careers and further education in architecture, interior design, construction trades, as well as future homeowners. Students will use architectural drafting procedures, practices and symbols to produce and plan elevation and detailed drawings that are required by UBC (Uniform Building Codes) for residential construction. Separately we assess students to gauge progress and inform instruction. Benchmark assessments for students in grades 9 through 12 are administered in the form of a midterm and final exam for full year courses. *Special Note: Only final exams are administered at the end of quarter courses and semester courses. Using architectural AutoCAD software, students will explore all necessary commands needed to produce two-dimensional drawings and threedimensional renderings. Students will produce a complete set of house plans customized to their individual designs. RATIONALE The present curriculum, approved in 1990, reflects drawing practices of that time. Many of these practices are now outdated since students are now learning to draw using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software (AutoCAD). This updated architectural drawing curriculum reflects the architectural standards (ANSI*) currently used today. Students will use architectural graphic standards, and national and local building codes to design their projects. This curriculum is in alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for 21 st Century Life and Careers, and Technology; it is also aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English Language Arts; Science and Technical Subjects. *ANSI = American National Standards Institute
4 TEC634 ARCHITECTURAL CAD I 4 THE LIVING CURRICULUM Curriculum guides are designed to be working documents. Teachers are encouraged to make notes in the margins. Written comments can serve as the basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in the classroom and to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for curriculum reforms as needed. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION During the development of this course of study, particular attention was paid to material which might discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or creed. Every effort has been made to uphold both the letter and spirit of affirmative action mandates as applied to the content, the texts and the instruction inherent in this course. MODIFICATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS For guidelines on how to modify and adapt curricula to best meet the needs of all students, instructional staff should refer to the Curriculum Modifications and Adaptations included as an Appendix in this curriculum. Instructional staff of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) must adhere to the recommended modifications outlined in each individual plan.
5 TEC634 ARCHITECTURAL CAD I 5 GENERAL GOALS The students will: 1. produce a set of house plans to architectural standards and local building codes. Types of drawings will include floor and foundation plans, elevations, wall sections, electrical plans and three-dimensional views. 2. learn about the development of residential house styles by studying the history of architecture. 3. be able to identify house styles and incorporate these into their own designs. 4. learn about house construction methods, be able to identify structural members of a house and then use them correctly in their own design. 5. learn how to plan for electrical and plumbing services within the home. 6. study careers associated with architecture. 7. Learn the proper use, maintenance and safety of desktop computers and CAD software.
6 TEC634 ARCHITECTURAL CAD I 6 GRADING PROCEDURES Daily short-term assessments, which may include the following: 20% Active engagement in-class activities Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of course material Written and oral reports Quizzes Homework Work folder Substantial assessments, which may include the following: 80% Worksheets Sketches CAD Drawings Tests The final examination (12% of the final grade) will include: Written exam (50%) CAD Drawing and/or authentic assessment problem (50%) Final Grade Full Year Course Each marking period shall count as 20% of the final grade The midterm assessment will count as 10% of the final grade, and the final assessment will count as 10% of the final grade.

The student will be able to: 2. plan, design and draw individual rooms of a house considering the purpose of the room, location, furniture and appliances used. 3. use the principles of design (symmetry, rhythm, balance) to design the exterior of their house. 4. identify the factors influencing the style of houses and incorporate these into the design of their house. 5. identify common roof types and incorporate these into their house design. 6. identify common window types and incorporate these into their house design. 7. recognize basic house types and shapes in order to choose appropriately for their own design (e.g., ranch, bi-level, split, etc.). 8. develop a design brief (a list of requirements) for their individual house. 9. design a house utilizing approved architectural standards. 10. recognize the fundamental reasons for zoning rooms and areas of their house and the importance of traffic flow around the house. 11. use the principles of modular planning in order to design houses efficiently. 12. plan stairways from main floor to basement and/or second floor. 13. apply building codes to the design of their house. 14. identify differences between site, landscape and plot plans. 15. orient the house on a building lot taking into account the topography and prevailing elements. 16. develop a finished floor plan from initial room designs and planning. 17. develop a minimum of two elevations based on chosen design. 18. develop a foundation plan based on chosen design. 19. develop a typical wall section based on chosen design. 20. plan, design and draw an electrical system for their house taking into consideration the service requirements, circuits needed and appliances used, the kinds of light fixtures and safety requirements according to architectural standards and the National Electric Code. 21. plan, design and draw a plumbing system for their house taking into consideration the waste disposal system, general design considerations, hot and cold water systems and main and well supply. 22. identify careers in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction and CAD related areas.

EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT completed drawings of the following rooms to approved architectural standards and assessed using appendixed rubric: living room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, bath- rooms, utility room. Quizzes and tests completed drawings incorporating the learned principles of roof an window design to approved architectural standards and assessed using the appendixed rubric. 17 TEC634 ARCHITECTURAL CAD I 17 S AM PL E AU T H E NT I C A S S E S S ME NT Introduction/Setting As a student architect, you are required to design an electrical plan or the main floor of the house you have planned and designed. Tasks 1. Identify the needs or your electrical system to include lighting and outlets and outline the services (220 or 110 volts) needed for the system. 2. Design locations for these specific services by researching local and National Electric Codes and show these on an electrical plan drawn by you on CAD station. 3. Research the required symbols necessary to draw the plan. RUB RI C Student completes the drawing, including border title block, scale and legend, to architectural and national standards showing location of all appliances, fixtures, outlets and wiring necessary for successful operation of the system. Student completes the drawing, but fails to include required information in title block or the electrical system is not perfectly operational. Student completes the drawing, but is not to required code and omits outlets and fixtures necessary for practical operation of services. Student completes a partial drawing, has missing elements of an electrical system, misrepresents fixtures and/or outlets and system is not operational. Student produces an incomplete drawing, shows complete misunderstanding of electrical needs of the system and does not identify electrical needs or follow codes.
