1111 CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 5 Issue 12 CPPG Pencil points NOVEMBER 2016: THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA VOLUME 5 / ISSUE 11 Message from the President by Amy Ottilige Awesome! Over 250 people visited the Rohan Fine Art Sale/Show on November 12, and many were amazed and very interested in the colored pencil paintings. Congratulations to the co-chairs Linda Carpenter and Lydia Busch for helping to make our presence known in the southern area of The Villages. Thank you to the greeters, monitors, and artists for participating in making this show successful. Our December meeting will be our Holiday Party. Please don t forget to bring your favorite dish (4-6 people) and a roll of quarters. There will be a cup next to each dish for you to drop a quarter or more. At the end, the member whose cup has the most quarters will win a surprise gift. All the money collected will be donated to the Food Pantry. Also, don t forget your creative holiday cards. The cards will be taken to patients at The Villages Hospital. Let s work together and bring a smile to all the people who need assistance and those who need cheer over the holidays. Please don t forget all those people who took the Cynthia Knox workshop; remember to bring in your picture for the December meeting. During this past year so much has happened not only in my personal life but also with the CPPG organization. Thank you to all members who have supported me and continue to work and support the CPPG organization. Sending you warm wishes filled with love and affection. Have a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year! Amy

The Guild s First Annual Fall Festival Fine Art Sale and Show was held on November 12, 2016, at Rohan Regional Recreation Center. The Festival featured 14 artists who displayed and/or sold their work, and several other services and activities were on display. Jan Jones represented the Guild at the membership table where she shared information about CPPG with guests at the show; Pam Young and Dorée Voychick represented the Lifelong Learning College and its colored pencil classes; Barb Perron shared information about the SEYA instructional program and offered some guests the chance to use colored pencils; and Victoria Peterson spent the day working on a painting so visitors were able to see some of the process. The Festival also offered visitors the opportunity to view demonstrations on DVD. Jane Routte managed the technology and reported more than 20 viewers at some of the demos. Eleven members served as Greeters and Monitors. Thanks to Carol Brady, Suzanne Carroll, Bob Dumas, Diane Dumas, Angie Fox, Doreen Lowther, Ellen Miller, Jill Miller, Amy Ottilige, Marge Phillips, and Susan Watson for welcoming visitors and giving exhibiting artists breaks from their display tables. Organizers of the Guild s first Fall Festival Fine Art Sale and Show called the event a success. More than 250 people came to the show and at least 15 people inquired about membership; although no one sold a lot, everyone sold something. The sale and show met the goal of introducing colored pencil painting at the southern end of The Villages. Greeters give guests a warm welcome. Jan Jones signs up new members. Pam Young and Dorée Voychick present LLC offerings. Barb Perron displays SEYA s activities. Joy and Dave Martin share artwork. Dawn Mastrodonato explains art to a visitor. Linda Carpenter displayed her art. Jean Martin s table helped the Humane Society. Cheryl Gates displays her cards and prints.

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 5 Issue 12 3 Jackie Ullrich s display includes award-winning art. Marsha McGill shares her work at the Festival. Sue Franz s art was very popular with the Fall Festival guests. Kathy Enos offered many beautiful pieces to the visitors. Bea Dale and Linda Bambas shared a table of artwork. Jeanette Robinson displayed a wide variety of colored pencil work. Visitors watched demos from past Jubilees, and everyone was treated to live colored pencil art by Victoria Peterson.

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 5 Issue 12 4 A beautiful fall centerpiece set the mood. The November meeting brought the members up-to-date on the Scholarship Committee, how to effectively use the CPPG website at upcoming bus trips and other topics important to our organization. Please remember that the website is updated constantly, and will provide members with important updates, forms for shows, membership information and calendar. Below: Dolores Paré was recognized for her birthday; Renée Conboy informed us about the website; Diane Dumas held the bus trip vote.

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 5 Issue 12 5 Member contributions to the Christian Pantry Food Bank are looked after by Nancy Bortone, Dotty Anderson, and Bea Dale. Membership Matters The Membership Committee wishes to extend a warm welcome to our newest member, Diana Fendley, who joined our Guild at the November monthly meeting, and to our seasonal members. We want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to seeing you at our December Holiday Party. Bring your donations to the December monthly meeting. Delivery to the food pantry will be made in December. 5 th Annual Colored Pencil Painters Guild Spring Jubilee Show and Sale It is that time again to think about participating in the Spring Jubilee which will be held on March 18, 2017, 9 a.m. 3 p.m. at the Colony Cottage Recreation Center. Cards should be in plastic sleeves along with envelopes (but not IN envelopes. Dawn Mastrodonato (gramadawn403@aol.com; ) has plastic sleeves available, and instructions based on her presentation from last year are available on the Guild s website ( We are hoping members can donate at least six cards, and all those donated will be displayed on a side table at the December meeting. They ultimately will be presented to The Villages Regional Hospital for distribution to patients who are hospitalized over the holidays. You can sign your cards with your name and The Colored Pencil Painters Guild, if you wish. You can also have the Guild s logo printed on the back of your cards, if you bring the logo to Office Depot on a jump drive. The Guild s logo is available for downloading on the CPPG website. Last year we donated over 150 greeting cards to the hospital. We hope to do as well, or better this year as the patients appreciate the gesture. Additional detailed information will be forthcoming.

CPPG PENCIL POINTS VOLUME 5 Issue Product Review: Prismacolor Colorless Blender Marker by Jan Jones Did you know that alcohol can be used as a blender for colored pencils? Well, it can, and one of the things I really like about it is that it doesn t change the color like odorless mineral spirits (OMS) or Turpenoid do. There is a choice for which method you use to apply the alcohol, but I think the most convenient is a marker. Prismacolor produces two styles of colorless alcohol blender markers. Each of them has double tips and a tiny end. Depending upon the style, you will also have either a chisel end or a brush end. I purchased the style that has the chisel end, but I would like to try the marker with the brush end, which I think I might prefer. DK s Dennis Kaminski did a comparison blending demo for me using four different blenders -- the Prismacolor Colorless Pencil Blender, Prismacolor Colorless Marker Blender, Gamblin Gamsol, and are you ready for this?? Kettle One Vodka. Yes, that s right, vodka. You can sip it, then dip a Q-tip in it and blend away. It works equally as well as the marker, but you might be a little more creative using the vodka method.. One of the downsides to my Prismacolor Marker Blender is that it requires the strength of Hercules to remove the cap. I ve said a few nasty words while attempting to get it off and think that Prismacolor really does need to redesign the cap to make it easier to remove. However, the one I have may be faulty because another one of our members has one that was not difficult for me to remove. A note of caution in using the marker: When you blend one color and then move to another, you have to remember to wipe the marker on a spare piece of paper first because color is retained on the tip and will dirty the new one. This is particularly undesirable when going from a dark to a light value. Bottom line: I really like the colorless blender marker for dark backgrounds and think you might find it worth a try. Here is a link to a helpful YouTube video that shows it in use: A Helpful Tip from Dorée As an artist making art work, I always like to extend my creativity when using art media. You can mix together any of your brand-name colored pencils: Prisma, Faber Castel, Caron d'ache, Derwent, Van Gogh, etc. You can also mix with your pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolor crayons. So if you use Prisma pencils and then add your solvent, you may want to add watercolor pencil work on top - that is ok! If you want to add water to the watercolor pencils on top of the solvent - that is ok, too! All of this depends on the "look " that you want for your painting. Try experimenting with layering and working with both watercolor pencils, water, Prisma pencils and solvent - together. Enjoy!
