4 A Jewel of a Card! I used the new Stampin Up! Basic Pearls for the first time with this card. I also accented the top background layer with the Sizzix Embossing folder, Perfect Polka Dots. These two elements really make this card come together nicely. The stamp set is what I termed an oldie but goodie, as I ve been using it for at least 4 years. But it has stood the test of time (enough clichés for you in one blog post?). Because it s an old stamp set, it s only sold as a wood mounted set. So you really do have to use the Stamp-a-ma-Jig for this two-step stampin technique. I made this card in August. In December I had the chance to pre-order some of the 2011 Occasions Mini Catalog items, and couldn t wait until Valentine s Day to try out some of the newest Red Glimmer Paper. So I tried out a Christmas Card, and even included some Glimmer Brads to really get things sparkling! 24

5 Some More of that Two-Step From my July 7, 2010, Blog Post: One of this year's Level 2 Hostess sets uses one of my favorite techniques, 2-Step Stampin'. It's called Fast and Fabulous and rightly so! You can get this Fabulous watercolor look as fast as stamping twice. The outline image is one stamp and the watercolor fill-in color is another stamp. To make this floral image I used Rich Razzleberry and one of the In Colors, Pear Pizzazz (boy, there are a LOT of zzzzzs in those names!). I applied ink to the outline stamp using a Classic Stampin' Pad and then used Stampin' Write Markers to color in the petals and leaves of the fill stamp. Presto (no, FAST!) a fabulous look. I finished off the stamped layer with a greeting from the continuing Stamp Set, All Holidays, and a separate little flower that I cut out to overlap the Pear Pizzazz edge. I texturized the card front with the Perfect Polka Dots Sizzix Embossing Folder, and added a little insert punched with the Scallop Edge punch to accent the Pear Pizzazz ink in the stamped image. Cool, huh? And simple. It took me no time at all to make with all the wonderful tools that Stampin' Up! has available! The card below uses the same basic layout as the one above, but it has a portrait orientation rather than landscape. Since I was using Designer Papers for the main background, I cut it 1/4 smaller all around to allow a bit of the blushing bride card to show around the edges. Don t forget you don t have to use the layout as is! 35

6 Just Relax! As I ve been putting this book together, I ve been rereading a lot of my blog posts. I do believe that my August 23, 2010, blog post bears repeating almost in its entirety. It just about sums up why I enjoy making cards so much it s relaxing!! Last week, I was so bogged down with a bunch of different complicated projects that I needed some time just to make something simple. Some rectangles with one mat layer each stamp, stamp, stamp. No ribbons or knots or bows or funny angles. With that attitude, it took me no time at all to make this card. I didn't agonize over where the flowers were going to be and where the stems would land. On the other hand, I was using the Cottage Garden Stamp Set in the clear mount form. So I could see pretty well where the flowers were being stamped. I wasn't quite so accurate with the stems. But remember that this was supposed to be simple and I was NOT going to stress over it! Here's a stamper's hint: When you're a bit too relaxed, you might just get a little sloppy. We all do. When quickly thinking out the colors for this card, I intended for the darker of the three flowers to be in the center and coordinate with the color in the stamped sentiment (also from the Cottage Garden stamp set). But I started flinging things around and, oops! I got a smudge on the bottom of the Daffodil flower strip. Sigh. But not to worry (this was a "no worry" day). Just rearrange the flowers, and suddenly that smudge gets covered up by the sentiment strip. Any time you want to make something simple, just cut the stamped paper the size you want it, then add 1/8" to the height and width to get the size for the mat layer. So simple! For this particular layout, the only stamped layer that you need to be a bit more careful about is the center vertical layer. Lay your card out on your working grid paper (or put a ruler up against the top edge) and find the center of the card (at 2-3/4"). Then arrange that center vertical layer so that ITS center is at the card's center. Then arrange the two outer vertical pieces the same distance from the center piece. 44

7 Greeting Cards Section 2 Squares and Other Unusual Sizes Many of the cards in this section are cut from 12 Square Card Stock to make more efficient use of my card stock. The first four pages provide some suggestions for cutting 12 Square Card Stock. Mailing Considerations for Unusual Sizes Not all cards in this section are accepted by the U. S. Postal Service for Mailing, and some of them require extra postage because of their shape. Here is a summary of the Postal requirements as they relate to sending greeting cards (called letters in Postal Service regulations). For the correct postage for any card that you make, refer to the USPS website, The width of the card must be greater than its height. The minimum width is 5 ; the maximum width is 11-1/2 The minimum height is 3-1/2 ; the maximum height is 6-1/8 Cards that do not meet either minimum will not be accepted for mailing. Cards larger than either maximum fall into the category, Large Envelope and the postage is different. Check the USPS Website ( for more information. Practical applications for your card making: If you have a 3 x 6 card, put it in an envelope that is at least 3-1/2 high and 6 wide. The Stampin Up! Small Open-End Envelopes meet this requirement. BUT remember to write your address along the longer side, which is considered the width of the envelope. You may not mail a 3 square or 4 square card unless you put it in an envelope that meets the minimum for both height and width. Square Envelopes (minimum 5 x 5 ) require extra postage (at this writing 20 ). Don t forget other regulations related to weight and thickness! 50
