1 AMA CHARTER No. 312 FLIGHT LNES MAY 2009 From your Club President Well, mother nature has finally took a turn for us. The evenings are a bit longer and the weather is starting to come around. The club has had a very busy last month. We successfully installed our new layer of runway material. Once the sun hit it a couple of days in a row it has stretched out nicely. I want to personally thank everyone who was involved with getting this task accomplished. With all of the reschedules I know it was difficult to shift your time around. Also, if you haven t noticed there is a new addition to the field. Darrell Watts has donated the use of a full size propeller which has been mounted above our signage. Thanks Darrell. Training nights have gotten off to a fairly good start, we are having a few students each night. I have also dropped off fliers at Hobby Haven to help promote our club and Training Program. Thanks to all of the trainers and ground crews. We also participated in the Spring Community Day event at Midale Farm location in Edgerton. This park is part of the Johnson County Parks system and we were more than happy to give back to the park. Although the turnout was not great the weather probably had a bit to do with that. We were still able to get in a few flights and show off for some of the kids. We are still continuing to move forward with more community programs this year. The next event is just around the corner. On May 12th we will be participating in the Johnson County Library Science Night. We will be setting up a static booth and showing off our airplanes how they work etc. If you are interested in joining us please let me know. CRL09FamilyScienceNight.pdf for more information. Thanks everyone for a great month. All of the hard work will make things smoother throughout the summer. 4 FLIGHT LNES LIGHT INES Page 4 Meeting Information What a Great Way to End the Fall/Winter Meetings B-24 Pilot Presentation On Thursday evening April 9 th we had a nice turnout for our final meeting at the Senior Center for this spring. Approximately 60 people were present to hear an interesting and entertaining presentation by Leonard Porter, who was a B-24 pilot in WW-II. We were pleased to have guests from the Wyandotte Co. Rangers, Lawrence Jayhawk Model Masters, KCRC, Hillsdale Barnstormers and two modelers from the Topeka clubs. A native of the KC area, Mr. Porter told about how he was selected to be a pilot, about his training and about his combat experiences. He spent his time as a pilot in the Pacific theater. His story about a near crash during training was hair raising as well as some of his stories relating to specific bombing missions. He also told of a couple of mission experiences which turned out to be very funny. One I can relate here: On one mission his aircraft was under heavy Japanese fighter attack. The top turret gunner was quickly tracing and firing at a fighter when two bullets pierced the top turret bubble passing on each side of his head. Simultaneously, the gunner had quickly shifted the gun position and the recoil of the gun had hit him between the eyes. The gunner started yelling, I m hit, I m hit. Blood is running down my face and down my legs. As soon as they cleared the attack, Capt. Porter instructed his navigator to go check on the gunner. Soon he heard loud laughter. It turns out the gun recoil had cut a minor gash in the gunners forehead which was bleeding rather profusely but what was running down his legs wasn t blood. Before adjourning, we had a nice break to visit personally with Mr. Porter, check out the beautiful P-47 model that Craig Williams had brought and to enjoy the nice refreshments (edit. Note) Again, the programs this year have been really interesting and fun. If you are missing them you are really missing out. When the Senior Center meetings start back up in the fall do plan on attending!
