2 About CKPG: Central Kentucky Photography Group was formed to have a meeting place for photographers of all levels to network and have fun shooting together. This is a very active and growing group. I hope to meet others who enjoy photography in an informal, non-intimidating setting. I m interested in Landscapes, sports, my kids :) Michael Margolies Moving to the area from Milwaukee and many other places. I'm a commercial photog, advertising, and marcom ops guy. Looking for a few groups to help me appreciate all the beauty and many historic locations here in KY, learn a little, teach a little. 1-

August: About 16 members spent time photographing horses at Old Friends Farm.

A living history museum of horse racing, the farm attracts nearly 20,000 tourists annually that get up close and personal with such stars

Commentator, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and the losingest horse in the history of racing, Zippy Chippy.

The topic for this year's August showing was Hidden Kentucky. The members photographed hidden treasures from around Kentucky.

The class was mostly about getting the new photographer up and running. Basic camera operation and CKPG website navigation was covered.

We will create advocates for the preservation of Shaker Village by building lasting relationships with guests, partners and donors.

Out and About with CKPG Old Friends provides a dignified retirement to Thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end. A living history museum of horse racing, the farm attracts nearly 20,000 tourists annually that get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders Cup Champion Gulch, Hollywood Gold Cup victor and multiple stakes winner, Rail Trip, Whitney Handicap Winner Commentator, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and the losingest horse in the history of racing, Zippy Chippy. In what has become an annual event the Paul Sawyer Public Library once again showcased photographs by CKPG members. The topic for this year's August showing was Hidden Kentucky. The members photographed hidden treasures from around Kentucky. A general orientation class for new photographers and members was given by Tim Harrod. The class was mostly about getting the new photographer up and running. Basic camera operation and CKPG website navigation was covered. Twelve of our members went on a photography tour of Shaker Village. We will create advocates for the preservation of Shaker Village by building lasting relationships with guests, partners and donors. That is the mission of those who preserve and maintain the site of the Shaker community which once existed at Pleasant Hill. September: Two members experienced military & civilian life during the Civil War on one of the best-preserved Union Army Supply Depot and Recruitment sites in the nation. This site is were the Union Army turned the rolling pasture land of Jessamine County into an enormous base of operations. If you've never been to a Zombie Walk the only way to explain it's a photography blast! A lot of the participants are in professional level TV / Movie Zombie gear. The Zombie Walk is free to everyone. The walk in Cincinnati was just that for those who attended. -2

5 Advanced 24 Advanced 24 is a project series designed to develop compositional, technical and editing skills of the photographer. This project is designed to be challenging to the developing photographer and force them to consider subject, light, composition, settings, and post process- Project 2 - Style Mimic using the Golden Triangle Project 4 - Black and White using Rule of Odds Project 3 - Pick 2 using the Golden Spiral Project 5 - Action shot using the negative space rule. -4

Halftone Effect in GIMP Ihad seen plenty of tutorials describing how to create a halftone effect using Photoshop but none on how to do the effect in GIMP.

Halftone in GIMP makes use of the Newsprint filter: Filters>Distorts>Newsprint. It s important to be familiar with some of the features of Newsprint Cell size is controlled here.

You can change the shape of the cells here. Round is used most of the time but it might be fun to use other choices. Oversample will control how sharp the spots are.

6 Halftone Effect in GIMP Ihad seen plenty of tutorials describing how to create a halftone effect using Photoshop but none on how to do the effect in GIMP. So back in 2007 I figured this out and wrote a small tutorial that I posted on my deviantart page. I m expanding on that tutorial here and I hope some will find it useful. Halftone in GIMP makes use of the Newsprint filter: Filters>Distorts>Newsprint. It s important to be familiar with some of the features of Newsprint Cell size is controlled here. The size will Be determined by the size of your image. A size of 8 to 12 works well. These control the color of the cells. Setting all to zero will create black spots. You can change the shape of the cells here. Round is used most of the time but it might be fun to use other choices. Oversample will control how sharp the spots are. A low value makes the spots more pixelly. I set this at its highest setting to get the sharpest spots possible. Halftone backgrounds are easy using GIMP. The basic steps are to create a black to white gradient and use Newsprint to create the spots. The spots will be larger where the gradient is black and will get smaller as the gradient goes to gray then white. 1. Open a new canvas: File>new set the desired size. 2. Create a gradient with the gradient tool. You should experiment with different shapes. 3. You can do a Gaussian Blur here if you like but it will work without one. Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the blur to 25 to Run Newsprint: Filters>Distorts>Newsprint. Experiment with the settings. 5-

8 Halftone Effect in GIMP Cont Now let s have some fun putting some halftone behind a subject In this case Tony Hawk. I found this photo on the web and cut Tony out of the background. There are many tutorials on how to cut a subject out using GIMP. A web search will find them. I opened a new white canvas of 800x800px and pasted Tony into the center after adding a transparent layer. 1. Move to the Tony layer and add a drop shadow: Filters>Light and Shadow>Drop Shadow. Set Offsets X and Y to zero, Blur radius to around 70 and Opacity to 100. Uncheck Allow resizing. 2. Merge the drop shadow down: Right click on the drop shadow layer and select Merge Down. 3. Run the Newsprint filter. 4. Click: Colors>Color to Alpha. Make sure the color is set to white. This will remove the white from the background so that you can put the image on any color background.
