Whoops, I ve been driving by the field, and haven t seen a lot of activity. I believe it might have hit 70 degrees today, but is still a tad breezy. I did hear that Darrel Cordle has been working on a new large P-51 Mustang, and it may have already had the maiden. Hey, I just had a guy pass me today on what appeared to be a B-2 Bomber bike. You know, a bike dressed up like a B-2 Bomber. I didn t get a real good look at him, but I did throw my camera lens in that direction. Now home, I swear that photo looks just like Hank Darnell. Float Team So, some of you guys, like me, are wondering, how the St Patricks Day Float is coming along. Hank Darnell and Jim Morris, the project leaders, sent me the following photos.

This class kicked-off today, and I stopped by to both observe and to help if needed. It looked like the school team had everything under control.

3 Float Team So, some of you guys, like me, are wondering, how the St Patricks Day Float is coming along. Hank Darnell and Jim Morris, the project leaders, sent me the following photos. Obviously this is Snoopy and the Doghouse. School RC Indoor Class Most of you know by now that Suman is sponsoring an RC Class at Lawrence High School. This class kicked-off today, and I stopped by to both observe and to help if needed. It looked like the school team had everything under control. Suman gave brief introductions and outlined what was planned for the class. The LHS class instructor is Charlie Lauts. She is the CAD teacher and specializes in industrial arts. About 10 high school students attended the first Saturday class on March the 12 th. They were given an opportunity to fly one of the Embler electrics in the gym. They will learn to build a foam electric airplane, and acquire a basic radio aptitude regarding radio control aircraft. All are invited to attend our flying field to learn from there as well. Here are some of the guys working on the related Red Barron Float. Here is Suman giving basic flight instruction above and making introductions below. We appreciate all the work The Float Team is doing to get ready for the St. Patrick s Day Parade this coming Wednesday. I believe we will be giving away candy and some of the left-over foam airplanes. I m sure Hank and Jim will recognize who the team is at the club meeting this Saturday. 3

4 Here is Dave Alexander giving pointers to Charlie Lauts (left) the school sponsor and instructor. March the field I had just enough time to run out to the field before the KU-Texas game yesterday. Darrel Cordle was flying his OS 1.60 powered Extra 300. Jim Denning had his Super Sporster cranked-up and flying well. Gary Weber was also found flying his E- Flite Katana. I personally was able to get a maiden flight on the MiniWave electric ducted fan aircraft that drug home from the SMRCC swap meet last December. I was pleasantly surprised as to how smooth it flew. It needed very few adjustments. Wichita Auction The students seemed very interested, so I trust this class will be successful, and perhaps create some new interest in radio control flying. Float Team New Photo I just got this photo from Hank Darnel. This is the nearly completed Red Barron aircraft. I talked to Darrel Cordle yesterday who attended the Kansas auction with Fred Heinecke. They said the selection quality of aircraft was down greatly. Sellers and buyers were down as well. They said it looked like everyone pulled there old dusty Beaters out of the attic and brought them to the auction. That s too bad, I wonder if this is a reflection of the economy. Feb. 19 Club Meeting Dave Alexander reporting Jayhawk Modelmasters Meeting Notes, Feb. 19, 2011 My did these guys get a lot done yesterday on the Red Barron Vehicle. Have I seen that motor before? Perhaps it was on last years Bi-Plane? We started the meeting with Show and Tell. First up was Jim Denny, with his Great Planes Super Sportster which he bought at a swap meet and rebuilt. He told an interesting story about how he and Bill Jennings (JMM member who passed away many years ago) both bought Enya stroke engines when they first came out, but Bill s suffered some damage and was never flown. Jim acquired an Enya 120 recently and discovered that it had the same damage, and Jim is pretty sure it is Bill s old engine. He repaired it and installed it in the Sportster, which had not yet flown as of the meeting. 4

This is a foamy, electric ducted-fan park flyer (32 span), which originally flew on a small brushed motor and NiCd batteries. Hank has upgraded it to a brushless motor and LiPo batteries and closed the cheater hole on the belly, and it should fly pretty well according to web reports. Hank and the Wattage Mig 15 The first item of business was the treasurer s report from Richard Sharp. Tom O Brien s safety report was fairly brief, given flying conditions, but he did tell us that on a recent doctor s visit, he had several skin lesions removed on the top of his sparsely-covered scalp. He made a plea for pilots to wear hats and sunscreen, and pay attention to unusual skin spots. Joe Gadzia, a dermatologist in his other life, seconded Tom s plea, and mentioned that several members have recently had skin cancers removed, including two cases of malignant melanomas, which can be fatal. He again emphasized hats with brims and sunscreen reapplied every hour with a minimum of SPF 30 (higher SPF s only add a small percent increase in protection and are not cost-effective unless roughly the same price as SPF 30). He mentioned that until recently, sunscreens were not very good at protecting against both UVA and UVB, and that Neutrogena now has a sunscreen that protects well against both. Hank Darnell reported on plans for this year s St. Patrick s Day parade. The idea is to build Snoopy s doghouse on one riding lawnmower and the Red Baron s triplane on another riding mower, and have them dog-fight down the parade route. The structures will be built out of foam and will hopefully not require any modifications to the mowers. Building will occur at Hank s house on Saturdays before the parade. Hank called for volunteers to help build and donate materials or cash. Former treasurer Jerry Foree presented a summary of the past year s income and expenses. Jerry s summary showed that for the year, we spent about $858 more than we took in. Considering that we have about $900 in unsold clothing inventory polo shirts, jackets, sweat shirts, caps we appear to be in pretty good shape financially. Let s buy up those shirts and jackets, folks! 5

6 Jerry s report stimulated discussion of newsletter expenses, and why with , we are still spending nearly $500 per year on newsletters. A lively discussion ensued, but no action was taken, because the newsletter editor was not present to explain exactly how the money was being spent. The from Vice Prez Dave Alexander to members about the idea of funding particular projects by member pledges led to a wide-ranging discussion of priorities. A proposal by several members to pay for the installation of a Web camera raised some concerns about obligating the club to pay the monthly fee in the future, given that this item ranked fairly low on the members priority survey. After discussion, based on a motion from Gary Webber, the club voted in favor of letting a group of members install a Web cam as long as they cover all costs, including monthly fees. There was general agreement that the top-ranked items in the survey (runway and parking lot maintenance) should get the most attention, and these will most likely be part of a club work day after next month s meeting. Drainage problems were discussed, and George Jones is going to get survey data to Fred Heinecke, so Fred can determine what can be done to fix the drainage. A number of members also raised publicity-related issues, such as the need to better promote and publicize our events, and the need for our members to attend the events of other surrounding clubs so that they come to our events. The up-coming electric fly-in was mentioned as one that needs special PR effort, since this is a fast-growing area of the hobby. Some members prefer to fly off grass, and others were worried about possible maintenance problems, but since Joe is planning to get the petromat regardless, the club voted to try laying petromat on the alternate runway (the smaller, west N-S runway), and try it out. Joe will try to get enough petromat to cover parts of the other runways, and we will store it in the shed at the field until we decide whether we want to lay it on the main runways. Gary Webber pointed out that the latitude/longitude coordinates for our field on the AMA web site appear to point to a location in Missouri. He has been corresponding with an AMA representative to try to get that fixed. Hopefully this will be taken care of before the next meeting. Jim Denny won model of the month, and Robert Sharp s B-17 was voted the 2010 Model of the Year, for which he received $100 (I think) in club vouchers ( funny money ). Four pilots who had flown at club day last month were present at this months meeting, and Dave Alexander won the Gal-O-Fuel (actual winnings to be determined!) Jim Morris won the monthly raffle of a Great Planes.46 size model of a Shoestring race plane. Jim Morris and the Shoestring Next, Joe Gadzia described information he has gathered about using petromat fabric to make hard-surface runways. Joe found a company in Kansas City, Vance Brothers Asphalt, that is willing to donate leftover ends of rolls of petromat for free. 6
