2 Descrpton These extremely compact DC-DC converters ncorporate all necessary nput and output flters, sgnalng and protecton features, whch are requred n the majorty of applcatons. The converters provde mportant advantages such as flexble output power through prmary current lmtaton, hgh effcency, excellent relablty, very low rpple and RFI nose levels, full nput to output solaton, neglgble nrush current, over temperature protecton, and nput over-/undervoltage lockout. The converter nputs are protected aganst surges and transents occurrng on the source lnes. The converters are partcularly sutable for rugged en vron ment, such as ralway applcatons. They have been desgned n accordance wth the European ralway standards EN 5055 and EN All prnted crcut boards are coated wth a protectve lacquer. The outputs are contnuously open- and short-crcut proof. An solated output Power Good sgnal and LEDs at the front panel ndcate the status of the converter. Test sockets at the front panel allow for a check of the man output voltage. Full system flexblty and n+ redundant operatng mode are possble due to vrtually unrestrcted seres or parallel con necton capabltes of all outputs. In parallel connecton of several converters, automatc current sharng s provded by a sngle-wre nterconnecton. As a modular power supply or as part of a dstrbuted power supply system, the extremely low-profle desgn reduces the necessary power supply volume wthout sacrfcng hgh relablty. A temperature sensor dsables the outputs when the case temperature exceeds the lmt. The outputs are automatcally re-enabled, when the temperature drops. The fully enclosed, black-coated alumnum case acts as a heat snk and an RFI sheld. The converters are desgned for 9" DINrack systems occupyng U/ TE only, but can also be chasss-mounted by four screws. Fttng an addtonal heat snk or orderng optons wth ftted heat snk s possble as well. 6 Functonal Descrpton The converters are desgned as forward converters usng prmary and secondary control crcuts n SMD technology. The swtchng frequency s approxmately 00 khz under nomnal operatng condtons. The bult-n hgh-effcent nput flter together wth a small nput capactance generate very low nrush currents of short duraton. After transformer solaton and rectfcaton, the output flter reduces rpple and nose to a mnmum wthout compromsng the dynamc ablty. The output voltage s fed to the secondary control crcut va separate sense lnes. The resultant error sgnal s sent to the prmary control crcut va a sgnal transformer. Double-output models have the voltage regulaton of output relyng on the close magnetc couplng of the transformer and the output nductor together wth the crcuts' symmetry. The current lmtaton s located at the prmary sde, thus lmtng the total output current n overload condtons. Ths allows flexble loadng of each output for unsymmetrcal loads n the range 0 to 90% of the total output power. In applcatons wth large dynamc load changes, we recommend connectng such a load to output. If output s not used, t should be connected parallel to output. Both outputs can ether be seres- or parallel-connected (see Electrcal Data). In normal operaton, the nternal control crcuts are powered by a thrd wndng of the man choke (except 8Q models). Start-up s ensured from the nput voltage by a lnear regulator. Note: When the output voltage s much lower then the nomnal value, ths lnear regulator s actvated, generatng consderable power losses. 0a Out OK+ 8 Prmary control crcut montor control 8 6 Out OK T R S+ 0 Vo+ Input 6 Vo+ flter flter 8 Vo Fuse 0 Vo C y 6 Isolaton C y S 0 Leadng pns Potentometer for opton P Do not connect for models xq0 or wth opton P Do not connect Fg. 6 Block dagram of a sngle-output converter 0a Out OK+ 8 Prmary control crcut montor V o control 8 6 Out OK T R 0 6 Fuse Input flter C y flter flter Isolaton C y S 0 Leadng pns Potentometer for opton P Do not connect for models wth opton P Do not connect Fg. 7 Block dagram of a double-output converter Vo+ Vo S+ Vo+ Vo Page 6 of

8 Input Fuse An ncorporated fuse n seres to the negatve nput lne protects aganst severe defects. The fuse s not externally accessble. Reverse polarty at the nput wll cause the fuse to blow. Note: For models wth no nternal fuse, see opt. F. The customer must provde an approprate external fuse or crcut breaker. Nomnal battery voltages n use are:, 6, 8, 7, 96, and 0 V. In most cases each nomnal value s specfed n a tolerance band of 0% to +5%, wth short excursons to ±0% or even more. In some applcatons, surges accordng to RIA are specfed n addton to those defned n IEC or EN The power supply must not swtch off durng these surges, and snce ther energy can practcally not be absorbed, an extremely wde nput voltage range s requred. The Q Seres nput ranges have been desgned and tested to meet most of these requrements. See also Electromagnetc Immunty. Input Under-/Overvoltage Lockout If the nput voltage falls outsde the lmts of V, an nternally generated nhbt sgnal dsables the output(s). Inrush Current The nherent nrush current value s lower than specfed n the standard ETS 00-. The converters operate wth re latvely small nput capactance C (see table ), resultng n low nrush current of short duraton. As a result, n a power-bus system the converters can be hot-swapped, causng neglgble ds tur bances. Input Stablty wth Long Supply Lnes If a converter s connected to the power source by long supply lnes exhbtng a consderable nductance L ext, an addtonal external capactor C ext connected across the nput pns mproves the stablty and prevents oscllatons. Actually, a Q Seres converter wth ts load acts as negatve resstor r, because the nput current I rses, when the nput voltage V decreases. It tends to oscllate wth a resonant fre quency determned by the lne nductance L ex t and the nput capactance C + C ext, damped by the resstor R ext. The whole system s not lnear at all and eludes a smple calculaton. One basc condton s gven by the formula: L ext P o max dv C + C ext > ( r = ) R ext V mn ² di R ext s the seres resstor of the voltage source ncludng the supply lnes. If ths condton s not fulflled, the converter may not reach stable operatng condtons. Worst case condtons are at lowest V and at hghest output power P o. Low nductance L ext of the supply lnes and an addtonal capactor C ext are helpful. Recommended values for C ext are gven n table, whch should allow for stable operaton up to an nput nductance of mh. 13 Parallel and Seres Connecton Sngle- or double-output models wth equal output voltage can be connected n parallel wthout any precauton, by nter connectng the T-pns for equal current sharng; see fg. 9a. Double-output models wth ther outputs connected n parallel behave exactly lke sngle-output models and are fully regulated. There s no nconvenence or restrcton usng the R-nput wth sense lnes. Sngle-output and/or double-output models can be connected n seres. For double-output models wth both outputs connected n seres, consder that the effect va sense lnes, R-nput or opton P s doubled. 14 Redundant Confguraton Fg. 0a shows a crcut wth ORng dodes D R n the postve output lnes, formng a redundant confguraton. For accurate output voltage regulaton, the sense lnes are connected after the ORng dodes. The T pns should be connected together to produce reasonable current sharng between the parallel-connected converters. If one of the converters fals, the remanng converters can delver the whole output power. Note: The current-share logc can only ncrease the output voltage margnally and remans functonal even n the case of a falng converter. Fg. 0b shows a qute smlar crcut wth ORng dodes D R, but wth dfferent output loads. To compensate for the voltage drop of the ORng dodes (f necessary), an auxlary crcut s added to each power supply consstng of a small dode D S and a small resstor R S. We recommend a current of approxmately 0 ma through D S and R S. Only Load 0 benefts from a secured supply voltage. The current sharng may be mproved by nterconnectng the T pns of the converters. Ths crcut s a bt less accurate, but more flexble and less senstve. Cauton: Do not connect the sense lnes after the ORng dodes, but drectly wth the respectve outputs. If for some reason one of the converters swtches off and the ORng dode s blockng, a reverse voltage can appear between the sense pn and the respectve output pn and damage the converter b b R p T Vo+/Vo+ D R R p T Vo+/Vo+ D R Out OK+ S+ Out OK+ S+ D S Out OK S Vo /Vo Out OK S Vo /Vo R S Load Vo+/Vo+ Vo+/Vo+ Vo /Vo Vo /Vo T Vo+/Vo+ Out OK+ S+ Out OK S Vo /Vo D R Load T Vo+/Vo+ Out OK+ S+ Out OK S Vo /Vo D S R S D R Load Load 0 Vo+/Vo+ Vo+/Vo+ + Vo /Vo + Vo /Vo Fg. 0a Smple redundant confguraton of double-output models wth parallel-connected outputs. 15 Voltage Regulaton The dynamc load regulaton s shown n fgure. The statc load regulaton measured at the sense pns s neglgble. Correct connecton of the sense lnes almost elmnates any load regulaton; see Sense Lnes. In a symmetrcal confguraton the output wth open R nput s regulated to V o nom, regardless of the output currents. If the load on output s too small (<0% of ), ts voltage wll rse and may actvate the overvoltage protecton, whch wll then reduce the voltage on both outputs. A fully ndependent output voltage montor (second control loop) lmts the voltage V o or V o to approxmately.5 V o nom (n doubleoutput models, the nd output s montored). Ths crcutry further protects the load n the unlkely event of a malfuncton of the man control crcut. There s no specfc bult-n protecton aganst externally appled overvoltage. 16 Current Protecton All outputs are fully protected aganst contnuous open-crcut condton or contnuous short-crcut by an electronc current lmtaton located on the prmary sde. Sngle-output models and seres- or parallel-connected double-output models have a quas rectangular constant current lmtaton characterstc. In double-output models, only the total current s lmted, allowng free choce of load dstrbuton between the two outputs, up to I o + I o I o max. However, a small current should reman on both outputs to guarantee good voltage regulaton. In case of overload (I o + I o > I o max ) both output volt ages are reduced smultane ously. Current dstrbuton n overload s dependent upon the type of overload. A short-crcut n one output wll cause the full current flow nto that output, whereas a resstve overload results n more even dstrbuton and n a reduced output voltage. 17 Hold-up Tme The Q Seres converters provde vrtually no hold-up tme. If hold-up tme or nterrupton tme s requred, use external output capactors or decouplng dodes together wth nput capactors of adequate sze. However, the relatonshp between T A and T C depends heavly on the operatng condtons and the ntegraton nto a system. The thermal condtons are nfluenced by nput voltage, output current, arflow, and temperature of surroundng components and surfaces. T A max s therefore, contrary to T C max, an ndcatve value only. Cauton: The nstaller must ensure that under all operatng condtons T C remans wthn the lmts stated n the table Temperature specfcatons. Note: Suffcent forced coolng or an addtonal heat snk mproves the relablty or allows T A to be hgher than T A max, as long as T C max s not exceeded. In rack systems wthout proper thermal management, the converters must not be packed too densely! In such cases the use of a 5 or 6 TE front panel s recommended. A temperature sensor generates an nternal nhbt sgnal, whch dsables the outputs, f the case temperature exceeds T C max. The outputs are automatcally re-enabled when the temperature drops below ths lmt. Ths feature s not ftted to 8Q models. Operatng BQ GQ models wth output current beyond requres a reducton of the ambent temperature T A to 50 C or forced coolng. When T C max s exceeded, the converter runs nto ts thermal protecton and swtches off; see fg. 7a. Note: Accordng to EN 5055, Class OT, the con verters BQ GQ can be operated wth P o nom contnously at T A = 70 C, and then for 0 mn at T A = 85 C wthout shutdown. A non-connected pn 8 wll be nterpreted by the nternal logc as an actve nhbt sgnal and the output(s) wll reman dsabled (fal safe functon). An nhbt nput enables (logc low, pull down) or dsables (logc hgh, pull up) the output, f a logc sgnal, e.g. TTL, CMOS s appled. 19 Current Sharng The current sharng faclty should be used when several converters are operated n parallel or redundant connecton. Ths feature avods that some converters are drven nto current lmtaton and thus produce excessve losses. As a result, the stress of the converters s reduced, and the system relablty s further mproved. Smple nterconnecton of the T pns causes the converters to share the output current. The current tolerance of each converter s approx. ±0% of the sum of ts nomnal output currents +. In n+ redundant systems, a falure of a sngle converter wll not lead to a system falure, f the outputs are decoupled by dodes; see fg. 0. Note: T-functon only ncreases the output voltage, untl the currents are evenly shared. If n a redundant system, one converter fals, the remanng converters keep sharng ther currents evenly. Snce the T pns are referenced to the pns S, the S pns of all converters must have the same electrcal potental. Double-output converters wth both outputs connected n seres can also be paralleled wth current sharng, f pns Vo of all converters are connected together, see fg. 9c. If the output voltages are programmed to a voltage other than V o nom by means of the R pn or opton P, the outputs should be adjusted ndvdually wthn a tolerance of ±%. Important: For applcatons usng the hot-swap capabltes, dynamc output voltage changes durng plug-n/plug-out must be consdered. Programmable Voltage (R-Functon) Ths feature s not avalable on models wth. V output or wth opton P. Note: Models wth. V output or wth opton P: The R-nput must be left open-crcut. The converters offer a programmable output voltage. The adjust s performed ether by an external control voltage V ext or an external resstor R or R, connected to the R-nput. Trmmng s lmted to the values gven n the table below (see also Electrcal Data). Wth open R-nput, the output voltage s set to V o nom. Wth double-output models, both outputs are affected by the R-nput settngs. If output voltages are set hgher than V o nom, the output currents should be reduced accordngly, so that the maxmum specfed output power s not exceeded. a) Adjustment by means of an external control voltage V ext between R (pn 6) and S (pn ); see fg. 0. It can be used for control functons such as data protecton, central system montorng or as a part of a self-testng system. It can be connected to get a centralzed fault detecton or may be used for other system-specfc applcatons at the prmary or the secondary sde of the converter. Connectng the Out-OK as per fg., V OK <.0 V ndcates that the V o or V o of the converter s wthn the range V t low V t hgh. V t low corresponds to V o nom, V t hgh to.0.05 V o nom. Note: Usng the R-nput or the opton P, the montor level s trackng the programmed output voltage. In an error condton, f the output voltage s out of range due to overload or an external overvoltage, V OK wll approach V p. The output s formed by an NPN transstor. The emtter (Out OK ) can be connected to prmary or secondary Vo to get an open-collector output. 21 Sense Lnes Ths feature allows for compensaton of voltage drops at the man output across connector contacts and load lnes. If the sense lnes are connected at the load rather than drectly at the connector, the user must ensure that the dfferental voltages (measured on the connector) V S+ (between Vo+ and S+) and V S (between Vo and S ) do not exceed the values n the table. Table : Voltage compensaton by sense lnes Nomnal output voltage V S+ V S _ Sum of V S+ + V S _. V, 5. V Unt V, 5 V V V Applyng generously dmensoned cross-secton load leads help avodng troublesome voltage drops. To mnmze nose pck-up, wre the sense lnes parallel or twsted. For unsymmetrcal loads, we recommend connectng the sense lnes drectly at the female connector. To ensure correct operaton, both sense lnes must be connected to ther respectve power output. Wth double-output models, the sense lnes must be connected to output only. Cauton should be exercsed, f outputs are seres-connected, as the compensated voltage s effectvely doubled. Because the effectve output voltage and output power are ncreased by the sense lnes, the mnmum nput voltage rses proportonally to the compensated output voltage. Cauton: Sense lnes should always be connected. Incorrectly connected sense lnes may cause an overvoltage at the output, whch could damage the output load and actvate the second control loop. The sense lnes can handle only small currents. Note: Sense lne connecton n a redundant confguraton s shown n fg. 0. Test Sockets and LEDs Test jacks (for pn dameter mm) are located at the front of the converter and allow montorng the man output voltage at the sense lne termnals. The test sockets are pro tected by nternal seres resstors. Double-output models show the sense lne voltage of output at the test jacks. 8Q models have no test sockets. 8Q models exhbt a green LED In-OK to montor the nput voltage. Important: If the nhbt functon s not used, pn 8 () must be connected wth pn () to enable the output(s). Do not open the converters, or warranty wll be nvaldated. Long nput, output and auxlary lnes, or lnes wth nductors, flters or couplng/decouplng networks may cause nstabltes. See Input Stablty wth Long Supply Lnes. Due to hgh output currents, the Q00/0 models offer two nternally parallel-connected contacts for both, the postve and the negatve output path (pns /6 and pns 8/0). It s recommended to connect the load to both female connector pns of each path n order to keep the voltage drop to a mnmum. Make sure that there s suffcent ar flow avalable for convecton coolng. Ths should be verfed by measurng the case temperature when the converter s nstalled and operated n the end-user applcaton. The maxmum specfed case temperature T C max shall not be exceeded. See also Thermal Consderatons. Ensure that a converter falure (e.g. by an nternal short-crcut) does not result n a hazardous condton. See also Safety of Operator-Accessble Crcuts. Page 7 of
28 Cleanng Lquds and Protecton Degree In order to avod possble damage, any penetraton of cleanng fluds must be prevented, snce the power supples are not hermetcally sealed. Protecton degree (female connector ftted to the converter): IP 0: All models, except those wth opton P (potentometer) IP 0: All models wth opton P. Standards and Approvals The Q Seres converters correspond to class I equpment. They are safety-approved to UL/CSA and IEC/EN nd Edton. The converters have been evaluated for: Buldng n Basc nsulaton between nput and case and double or renforced nsulaton between nput and output, based on ther maxmum rated nput voltage Basc nsulaton between Out-OK and case, and double or renforced nsulaton between Out-OK and nput and between Out-OK and output, based on ther maxmum rated nput voltage Functonal nsulaton between outputs and output to case Use n a polluton degree envronment Connectng the nput to a crcut, whch s subject to a maxmum transent ratng of 500 V. CB Scheme s avalable. The converters are subject to manufacturng survellance n accordance wth the above mentoned standards and wth ISO 900:05. Ralway Applcatons The converters have been desgned observng the ralway standards EN 5055:07 and EN 50--:06. All boards are coated wth a protectve lacquer. The Q Seres converters have been certfed to the fre protecton class HL to HL accordng to EN 555. Isolaton The electrc strength test s performed n the factory as routne test accordng to EN 505 and IEC/EN The com pany wll not honor warranty clams resultng from ncorrectly executed electrc strength feld tests. The resstance of the earth connecton to the case (<0. Ω) s tested as well. Tested at 500 VDC..8 mm between nput and output. Safety of Operator-Accessble Crcuts If the output crcut of a DC-DC converter s operator-accessble, t shall be an SELV crcut accordng to IEC Table 0 shows some possble nstallaton confguratons, complance wth whch causes the output crcut of the DC-DC converter to be SELV up to a confgured output voltage (sum of nomnal voltages, f n seres confguraton) of 5 V. However, t s the sole responsblty of the nstaller to ensure the complance wth the relevant and applcable safety regulatons. Page 8 of
29 Descrpton of Optons Opton P: Voltage Adjustment Opton P provdes a bult-n mult-turn potentometer, whch allows an output voltage adjustment of ±0% of V o nom. The potentometer s accessble through a hole n the front cover. Wth double-output models, both outputs are affected by the potentometer. If converters are parallel-connected, ther n dvdual output voltage should be set wthn a tolerance of ±%. If V o s set hgher than V o nom, the output currents should be reduced accordngly, so that the maxmum specfed output power s not exceeded. Opton -7: Temperature Range Opton -7 desgnates converters wth an operatonal ambent temperature range of 5 to 7 C. Not for new desgns. Opton B, B: Addtonal Heat Snk Thckness:.5 mm (opt.
