1 Three-phase voltage regulator

2 WARNING! HIGH LEAKAGE CURRENT: first onnet to earth! The rgf00 is a voltage regulator for three phase otors whih operates onneted to the three phase ains voltage. The regulator ust be installed by qualified personnel who will onnet the eletri supply, attah the ables in their peranent positions and oission the plant. Inorret installation of the rgf00 voltage regulator or the fan onneted to it ay ause daage to objets or people so ensure the instrutions in this anual and all required seurity easures are read and followed arefully. When reeiving the goods, hek that the paking is intat; in the event of any daage due to transportation, notify the forwarding agent aording to legal requireents. The rgf series of produts shown in this anual has been anufatured to the highest standards. The anufaturer delines all responsibility for aident, loss or daage aused by the use of these applianes. These ust be orretly installed by qualified personnel in onfority with their destined use and, whenever needed, ust undergo orret aintenane whih should be arried out while ensuring the safety of people, doesti anials and goods. The purhaser ust previously asertain the suitability of the produt for the use it is intended for and assue all onsequent risks and responsibility. The rgf00 is a ains voltage regulator whih uses the phase-ut priniple opletely ontrolled over the three phases. It has been designed to vary the effetive voltage on three phase asynhronous otors for fans following a ontrol signal (either A, VDC or Oh). The appliane is anufatured for industrial use and therefore eets the EC standards that relate to industrial environents. Using the appliane for purposes other than the ones desribed above will be onsidered inorret. In partiular, the appliane ay NOT be used to supply ahine tools or any other ahines where the otor torque-speed harateristi is not quadrati. If the equipent is intended for ivil, oerial and/or light industrial use, suppleentary oponents and other types of equipent are required whih an be supplied on speifi request fro the purhaser. In this ase, the purhaser ust provide a suitable design of the plant in whih the appliane is to be installed (opliant with EN / standards regarding disturbane produed by eletrial household applianes and the like. We deline all responsibility for any errors in the atalogues, publiations or other written douents. The inforation in this anual is not binding and we reserve the right to ake hanges to the produts without prior notie, at any tie and in any way that we dee onvenient for prodution purposes or useful for inreasing funtionality and perforane. /5

3 SAFETY RULES! This appliane has been designed to give exellent perforane provided it is installed and used arefully in a suitable eletri environent by qualified personnel. The following rules ust be obeyed when installing the regulator : Follow the instrutions in this anual exatly and observe all safety easures in fore. Do NOT taper with or disasseble the regulator's internal oponents; doing so will INVALIDATE THE GUARANTEE and ay ause unneessary daage. The regulator does not ontain oponents that an be repaired by the user. The regulator ust be suitably and effetively earthed by the installer aording to the standards in fore; earthing is essential for the EC filter to operate orretly. The user ust be proteted fro the eletri supply and the otor ust be proteted fro possible overloads in opliane with the standards in fore. DO NOT supply the regulator without the internal protetion panel ade fro lexan. DO NOT touh the eletrial parts of the iruit when the power supply is onneted under any irustanes. Before supplying power to the unit, hek arefully that the power and earth are orretly onneted. If the ains supply is "disturbed", whih ay be due to other eletrial power oponents ausing irregularities in the supply (power ontators), it is reoended that suppleentary three phase SURGE ARRESTER filters are installed diretly on the regulator supply. Avoid repeatedly onneting and disonneting the power supply to the regulator; a onstant supply keeps the regulator at working teperature and eliinates probles aused by ondensate inside the protetion ase. Alternatively, use the reote terinal board ontat 'B' S = ON/OFF. The S = ON/OFF ontat on the B terinal board does not ut the ains supply and therefore annot be used as a safety swith. Install the regulator out of diret sunlight so that the ontainer annot get overheated and ause a redution in the axiu load urrent. The appliane ay operate at environental teperatures up to 50 C. Do not install it where this teperature ay be exeeded or the integrity of the regulator will be oproised and the appliane ay ake the user appliane operate at full load (00%) with all onsequent effets. The appliane ust be stood vertially to enourage heat dissipation and to ensure there is a suffiient air irulation and free spae easuring 50 above and below the regulator. If several regulators are to be grouped together on a single eletri board, provide fored air irulation with a fan or ooling unit of suffiient power. Use the holes on the lower and power terinal board sides of the appliane, for entrane of the onnetion ables. This will prevent water, dust et. fro getting in and will ensure the IP55 protetion level is aintained using adequately sized ables and sheaths of suitable quality. Reasseble and hek the over of the external protetion panel is properly losed. DO NOT alter or daage the identifiation stikers on the equipent. DO NOT fore the triers to rotate beyond their set ehanial travel. Only alter the triers intended for regulation. Under no irustanes alter the triers arked with the spot of red paint. WARNING! 5 .0 PRESENTATION THANK YOU for hoosing an rgf00 series three phase voltage regulator, designed speifially to give the axiu yield and greatest ease of use. Like all our produts, it has been built to the very highest quality standards using eletroni oponents of the utost reliability whih have undergone funtional tests that guarantee use of the produt for at least 0,000 hours of ontinuous operation without proble. The rgf00 regulator is a power unit designed to eet requireents of quality and flexibility of use in plants and ahines in whih proportional variation of the speed of rotation of the fans is essential. The regulator is housed in a GEWISS GW Plast 0 C ase (fig. ) whih guarantees high heat resistane during ordinary use (0 C), inreased ehanial ipat resistane (IK = 08) and a protetion level (IP55) that allows the regulator to be installed out of doors. Inside the ase there is a lexan protetion panel displaying instrutions for use and oissioning of the rgf00. The A rgf00 is shown in fig.. Vd A NTC fig. Before installing the devie, you are invited to read this anual whih desribes the neessary proedures for orret installation and oissioning of the ahine. rgf00 5/5

6 Like all our produts, the rgf00 series bears CE arking as required by diretive 89/6/ECC and its subsequent odifiation EEC/9/ on eletroagneti opatibility. Sine all these produts are not used as "stand alone" applianes but inorporated into other plants or ahines, the standards' opatibility test was arried out under typial operating onditions. The essential requireents of the diretive are satisfied by onfority to "generi standards" for heavy industry. 11 . PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The rgf00 series applianes are voltage regulators that use the phase utting priniple totally ontrolled over three phases. The regulators, also referred to as speed ontrols, have been designed to hange the average voltage on the following types of equipent, aording to a ontrol signal: asynhronous three phase otors onneted to fans, pups, agitators, ixers; eletrial resistor devies with setioned single / three phase. Regulation ours as a result of utting of the input sinusoid. Regulation does not generate any torque knok or pulsation and is partiularly quiet. Any voltage loss is ontained within a axiu liit of %. Fig. 6 shows a blok diagra of regulator rgf00. It is atually well-known that, while the starting urrent in axial fans is equal to or ties the rated urrent, the sae urrent in entrifugal fans an have values around 7 or 8 ties the rated urrent. As far as the hoie of otor is onerned, it is advisable to hoose otors suited to the type of regulation. As a general rule, the best suited are: otors with high slipping resistive otors defluxed otors tropialised otors CLASS H otors as these allow better perforane to be obtained with speed hanges, they are quieter and start with lower urrent. When hoosing a otor, it is always advisable to ontat your own supplier and order a otor whih is suitable for speed ontrol by voltage hange. Subsequently, pratial trials should be arried out on the otors or prototype ahines in order to hek their orret operation. After hoosing the otor, the speed regulator ust be ordered aording to the rated voltage, axiu power required (load-aperes) bearing in ind the starting urrent. /5

12 After the otor harateristis have been heked, the following should be defined in order to identify the type of operating ode and appliation... Operating ode The rgf ontrols allow two different types of operation depending on whih type of input is available: operation as REGULATOR (also alled ASTER) the phase utting regulators is diretly onneted to one or ore sensors; the phase utting is a funtion of the values seleted for: #" Set-Point P (trier or entesial swith) #" Proportional band P (trier) operation as POWER UNIT (also alled SLAVE) In this ase, the rgf is set up to be ontrolled by an external aster regulator whih deides the phase utting of the voltage by sending the ontrol signal to the slave. The inoing ontrol signal to the rgf00 regulators an be: For a ASTER (A Vd) Ative sensors with ontrol in urrent (A) or voltage (Vd) For a ASTER (oh) NTC sensors with ontrol in C/oh ( 0 5 C ) For a SLAVE (A Vd) Control signals in urrent (A) or voltage (Vd).. Appliation It is generally possible to onnet one or two sensors/ontrol signals to all ASTER and SLAVE odels; with two () sensors-signals onneted, the regulator autoatially selets the greater or lesser signal. In the ase of ative sensors, this an be diretly powered (4Vd / ax. 40 A). The prinipal appliations are for easuring pressure (bar), teperature ( C), huidity (%RH), delivery (u./h), superpressure (.), stati pressure (Pa), superteperature (destratifiation) et. in plants and ahines. ASTER SLAVE fig. 7 /5

13 .4 ELECTRIC OTORS Three phase asynhronous otors an be onneted to the rgf00 regulator in appliations where the torqueotor speed harateristi is quadrati. This ainly allows phase utting appliation with axial and entrifugal fans used for ontrol purposes. The orret eletrial onnetion and the supply voltage are given on the otor's speifiations plate. The sense of rotation of the otor an be altered by swapping the onnetions of two of the three supply ables. It is iportant to keep the otor power supply able as short as possible to redue the level of interferene and leakage urrents to a iniu (0 / 5 t); if the able has to be long, an auxiliary three-phase filter of exatly the sae power as the regulator ust be installed on the regulator output. The figure below shows the star and delta onnetion onfigurations. U V W U V W Z X Y Z X Y STAR CONNECTION fig. 8 DELTA CONNECTION The rgf00 regulator an ontrol several otors onneted in parallel but the absorption of the otors' total urrent ust never exeed the rated urrent as given on the rgf00's speifiation plate. The speeds of the otors vary at the sae tie though any differenes in behaviour during start up and at low speeds are due to slight differenes between the otors even if they are of the sae type. However, if the required speeds of the otors are different, otors ust be used with different rated speeds. Bear in ind though that otors with very different harateristis reate different eletrial situations and these ay ause probles on start up and at low speeds aused by different resistanes of the stators whih require different voltages on start up and at low speeds..4. agnetotheral protetion rgf00 devies ust be proteted by a agnetotheral swith fitted upstrea of the utting regulators. Installation of agnetotheral protetions is the responsibility of the installer. 16 .0 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. POWER CARD ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS For supply and load onnetion, referene should be ade to the diagras shown in fig. 8, aking sure the setion of the ables is adequate to the onneted load. The power ables (supply and load) ust be installed separately fro the ontrol ables (analogue inputs and ON-OFF inputs/outputs) keeping the axiu distane possible between the ondutors. Do not plae power ables with signal ables in the sae raeway. If the ables ross one another, ensure it is at 90. ATTENTION : onnet the earth ondutor to the srew plaed purposely beside the dissipator. Use heat resistant ables able to withstand teperatures greater than 90 C. SURGE ARRESTER : eletri protetion plaed between the regulator supply and the earth to protet the devie fro transitory ains exess voltage. ATTENTION : disonnet the PE faston ontat fro the earth referene, in the 'ELECTRIC STRENGTH TEST. The rgf00 regulators allows onnetion of three-phase loads without requiring onnetion of the NEUTRAL. This siplifies installation and failitates the star or delta load onfiguration. It is advisable to provide a by-pass swith to allow load ativation even when the utting regulators is faulty (eergeny by-pass). When onneting the by-pass, the following preautions should be taken into onsideration: i) onnetion ade through the by-pass swith ust keep phase orrespondene unaltered so as to avoid destrutive shortiruits and aintain the otor's sense of rotation. ii) before supplying the load with axiu voltage, supply to the regulator should be disonneted, therefore: it is advisable to use a three-position anual swith as a outation devie if autoati outation is arried out by eans of ontators, ake sure there is soe delay (at least seonds) between regulator disonnetion and load ativation operations. Eletrial onnetion of the supply and load, for rgf00 regulators is shown in fig. 9 U V W PE R S T BY-PASS PE L L L 6/5

22 ..4 Reote onnetion for a urrent (A) or voltage (Vd) ontrol signal Connetion of an external ontrol unit (for SLAVE, V) If regulator ontrol fro an external unit is required, hoose one of the following versions: SLAVE when the external ontrol unit uses a urrent ontrol signal (0-0 A), or SLAVE V when the external ontrol unit uses a voltage ontrol signal (0-0 Vd). This onfiguration allows a grid of several regulators to be ontrolled via a single regulation ontrol signal in either A or Vd, even if the regulators are a ixture of single phase and three phase. It is therefore possible to ontrol totally and autoatially several ventilation units and, if neessary, to release one or ore regulators fro autoati regulation that, using a loal anual ontrol signal (only with 0-0 Vd ontrol), are regulated to the requested voltage. The nuber of inputs available for differentiated ontrol is with priority going to the greater value. See fig. 4 for the layout of the onnetions. 24 ..5 Connetion of the rgf ULTIDRIVER ontrol In this onfiguration, the rgf00 regulator is able to guide other single or three phase rgf regulators through the A 9 (OUT) and A 0 (GND) terinals. The ontrol output ontrolled by juper J6 allows a signal to be sent to several SLAVE ( or V) units. The signal takes aount of the work settings on the ain rgf00. Using a single ontrol / sensor, it is therefore possible to ontrol several single or three phase regulation units, that at both siultaneously and proportionally, starting fro the transitted regulation ontrol signals. 26 S: AUT / AN (B B terinals) S = OPEN S = CLOSED operation with variable speed regulation (Led heat-pup = OFF) ANUAL operation at fixed speed (Led heat-pup = ON) The S ontat allows the regulation to be outated fro "AUTOATIC OPERATION" (power supplied aording to the ontrol signal) to "ANUAL OPERATION" with fixed supply power. Ativation of this funtion is displayed by the heat-pup Led lighting up. Appliation exaple : WINTER / SUER OPERATION of heat pups. The fans, onneted to the regulator, an be ativated depending on the teperature or pressure deteted; or, by swithing S= CLOSED, voltage to the fans an be kept onstant, equal to the value set with P4 (00% - 0%), for the required tie. CALIBRATION: swith the S ontat to CLOSED (Led heat-pup = ON) and regulate the position of the P7 trier to the desired voltage; then open S (Led heat-pup = OFF). This will reset the autoati speed regulation on the basis of the ontrol signal. The operation desribed here an be ahieved by eans of eletroehanial devies. However it is extreely siple if the utting regulators is ontrolled by an external regulator (e.g. Energy Light - type Eliwell), whih an autoatially ontrol the S ontat. S: STOP (B 4 B 5 terinals) S = OPEN S = CLOSED Regulator operational Operation stop With S = CLOSED operation of the utting regulators is stopped via a reote ontat. This is useful, for exaple, to stop fans during defrosting or to link fan operation to ativation of a entral unit (e.g. opressor) or an alar (e.g. ax./in. teperature). S: SP / SP (B B terinals) S = OPEN Autoati regulator operation with SET-POINT S = CLOSED Autoati regulator operation with SET-POINT The S ontat allows the referene Set-point to be outated fro SP to SP. With S = OPEN, the regulator works with SET-POINT. With S = CLOSED, the regulator works with SET-POINT. Ativation of this funtion is displayed by the SP and SP Leds lighting up on the optional RGFPB0640 ard. This funtion is useful, for exaple, for day / night or winter / suer operations. Seletion is ade by eans of an external ontat in autoati or anual outation ode. N.B. : this ontrol is only operative if the optional RGFPB0640 ard is present on the regulator. TK: TK TK (B 6 B 7 terinals) TK = CLOSED Regular operation (Led TK ALAR = OFF ) TK = OPEN Operation stop (Led TK ALAR = ON ) Intervention of an external safety devie opens a 0 V potential ontat and halts operation of the regulator. Led TK ALAR (ON) is lighted up. In plants with fans in parallel, individual protetion devies ust be used for eah otor onneted so as to redue the risk of a total stop.
