2 ACCESS STAIRS For road, rail and utilities for aess to maintenane works via an embankment. 1. Sope This doument gives basi guidane on the installation of modular aess stairs and handrails supplied by Stanton Bonna under normal onditions. When irumstanes vary, for example varying landing stages, supplementary instrutions may be required and should be provided by the overall sheme designer. The system omplies with Highways Ageny Regulations and an be adapted to DDA (Disability Disrimination At) standard on request. 2. Site Preparation Ease of assembly means that, subjet to learane of an embankment s vegetation, the stairway modules an be installed on rough terrain with the minimal amount of preparatory groundwork. The fixing pins are 400mm with approximately 200mm inserted into the ground so the risk to buried servies is minimal. The use of CAT san equipment prior to work ommening is seen as good pratie and may be required, subjet to the site loation. 3. Delivery and Handling The system is delivered to site on pallets of no more than 1 tonne per pallet. Assembly an be managed by hand with the assistane of light duty lifting equipment, as neessary. Please note the angle of the risers will vary subjet to the angle of the slope. Page 3 of 8

4 5. Stairway Installation Step 1: Prepare string line Step 2: Grade the formation. Lightly ompat. Remove soft spots, plae lean mix onrete blinding, if neessary. Step 3: Install Kiker Beam. Step 4: Position Strings with Assembly Pins (2 per flight) using hammer. If onrete base used drilling will be needed. Page 4 of 8

5 Step 5: Install Risers. Chek the level. Step 6: Fit and tighten Tie Bars Step 7: Repeat proess for eah subsequent module. Fill steps with either onrete or MOT type1. If handrail is required, fit this before filling the steps (see next setion). 6 6. Handrail The Stanton Bonna Aess Stairs an aommodate a variety of hand rail formats inluding galvanised steel and GRP, to industry speifi requirements. We have adopted a tube lamp system that is quik and easy to install. The posts an be supplied pre-assembled whih helps redue installation time. The base-plate an aommodate 22 to 45 o angles from horizontal and 42.4(C)mm or 48.3(D)mm tube type an be used. The top and middle handrails slide through all the onnetions on the posts to minimise utting on site. Fittings are available to adapt to the site needs eg. Elbows and bends for landings and turns. 7. Handrail Installation 7:1 Base-Plate and Posts The Aess Stair stringers have a number of preformed holes to aommodate the base-plate. Three on eah stringer, left and right. Eah base-plate is supplied with two bolts, two loking or seurity nuts, and four washers two small and two large. Position the first base-plate at the bottom set of stringer holes with the resent shaped hole at the top. Plae the large washer on to the bolt and plae the bolt through the bottom hole (inside to outside). Pass through the bottom base-plate hole then plae the smaller washer and nut on to the bolt, hand tighten. Repeat this with the top bolt. One both bolts are in plae lightly tighten and insert the post. Make sure the post is plumb and fully tighten the nuts, if using seurity nuts tighten until the head snaps off. (Photo shows how the base-plate fitting is bolted to the string and then the post inserted and seured). Page 6 of 8

7 Upright posts an be set at 825mm or 1650mm entres: > If working to 1650mm entres then the bottom two holes on eah stringer should be used. When at the top stringer then use the top set of holes as well. > If working to 825mm entres then use top and bottom set of holes. The system an terminate in a stair return or it an ontinue on to a landing that is straight, offset or turned. 7:2 Handrails One all the posts are seure thread the handrail tube through the top set of tee s. These may need loosening to get the orret alignment. Lok the handrail into position by using one or two of the grub srews in the tee s. On longer runs of stair the tube may need to be jointed using internal joins supplied. Repeat this for the mid rail. 7:3 Handrail Return Plae a return on either the top or the bottom of the stairway handrail ensuring that it is lined up with the end of the top and the mid rail. Repeat at the other end. Trim to size as needed ensuring that any exposed or sharp edges are smoothed off and safe. One the onfiguration of handrails and return are orretly aligned tighten all the grub srews on all of the lamps and fittings. Page 7 of 8
