3 Introdution When eletriity was fi rst generated it reated a need for urrent transformers (CT) used to measure eletriity. In this atalogue we will identify all our CT. Current transformers are used: To identify and seperate individual iruit(s) for measuring / proteting equipment onneted to high voltage lines. To help identify / prevent high urrent transmissions. To redue short iruit urrents down to permissible levels, in sensitive measuring and protetion equipment. To produe proportional seondary signals (0-5 / 4-20 m) to over a given primary range ( ) whih is then onneted to the appropriate measuring / protetion devie. NOTE: Experiene has shown that through improper seletion / installation of measurement / protetion transformers it may reate situations where the devie may not operate properly as well as a ompromise personnel safety during ritial periods. Seletion To orretly selet the measurement transformer (measurement or protetion) the following information must be verifi ed: The appliation for whih it is intended (measurement or protetion) Features of the operating environment, or onditions of use (indoors or outdoors, maximum operating temperature, et.) The speifi ation of the wire(s) that the CT will be installed around: Size of ables or buss bar Primary urrent range to inlude maximum and minimum urrent to be measured Perentage of overload, range and time (if appliable) System voltage (low, medium or high) Short iruit urrent System frequeny Speifi ation of the measurement / protetion devie assoiated with the CT to inlude auray, nominal urrent, onsumption, et. Distane between the transformer and the devie, plus the able diameter used to onnet the CT to the devie The power of a transformer Important Note: In the transformer, the primary urrent has to generate (indue) the power required for the seondary side to transmit the seondary urrent to the measurement devie. Indued power has to be equal to or greater than the losses in the line plus onsumption of the measurement devie itself. Losses in the line, P L : This is the power lost, through heat, generated by the passage of urrent through the resistane R L in the ables, in the transformer s seondary iruit. Fators to be taken into aount: Seondary urrent. P L = R L I 2 Cable diameter. R L is inversely proportional to the square of the diameter Cable length. R L is proportional to the length of abling (there and bak) Power: The nominal apparent power (V ) with a speifi ed power fator, whih the urrent transformer supplies, to the seondary urrent with the assigned 2 urrent when it is onneted to its nominal load, S(V ) = Z I s ording to Standards, for apparent power greater than or equal to 5 V, the power fator is 0.8 indutive. For apparent power less then 5 V the power fator is onsidered to be one (unity). M7-3

5 uray of a transformer The perentage of error, produed in a transformer, is established by IEC In measurement transformers: 25 % and 100 % of nominal power. 6 The transformer when saturated urrent transformer is saturated when the primary urrent, passing through the CT, is greater then the nominal rating of the CT. The linearity of urrent transformation, between the primary and seondary sides dereases, so error inreases. The saturation of the transformer is inversely proportional to the load (Fig. 6). The differene between measurement and protetion urrent transformers is their behavior when an overload ours on the primary side. CT used for measurement are saturated when there is a primary urrent overload. In order to protet the equipment, on the seondary side, Protetion transformers do not saturate until there is a very high urrent on the primary side. Class 5P15 protetion transformer indiates that it has an auray rating of ± 1% and that it does not beome saturated until the primary urrent reahes 15 times the nominal urrent rating of the CT. In measurement transformers, the SFETY FCTOR Fs parameter indiates the exessive amperage on the primary side urrent in relation to the urrent sent to the measuring devie on the sondary side. 14 TRM / TRMC / TRP CIRCUTOR has a large range of urrent transformers manufatured in resin. One of the advantages that this type of transformer has is that the resin inreases the CT s strength relative to: mehanial resistane, high eletrial rigidity, tropial weather, et.). lso, the transformer ore is not aessible in this Series. The TSR an add all the onneted urrents, from several sets urrent transformers, to generate a proportional output. To do this the ratio of onneted CT has to be the same.
