THE WESTRALIAN ARTIST West Australian Society of Arts Inc. Established 1896 Patron: Her Excellency The Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO, Governor of Western Australia OCTOBER 2015 NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to you all. The winter months have seen the resignation of some very old friends who through age, ill health now find it impossible to drive at night. We are sorry to see them go and wish them well. VALE Lynette Allen I am sorry to advise that Lynette passed away in August 2015 after a long period of ill health. Lyn was a regular and loyal attendant at our Meetings and functions and was a pleasure to know and a good friend to all. We extend our condolences to her family. I hope that with the warmer weather we will see you turn up in greater numbers as we miss your company. ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS The Annual Subscription of $40.00 for the 2015/16 year is now overdue. Please pay as soon as possible to the Treasurer, Dale Smith if you have not paid. Her postal address is: 18A Cobell Street, Yokine WA 6060 Or if you wish to pay by bank transfer: BSB Account please reference your name for identification. I must remind you that under our Constitution non-payment by 30 September technically leaves a member subject to termination of membership. We do not wish to see this eventuate so please expedite payment if you have not already done so.
Our Annual Subscription of $40.00 is one of the lowest of any of the societies, particularly when you take into account what is available to you. A great number of you are probably not aware of the benefits that you can avail of as a member at generally no additional cost. These include: Newsletter A Newsletter is forwarded to all members every month except January when we are in recess. This gives information regarding coming events and other matters relating to the Society. You can utilise the Newsletter by providing information about awards you have won, forthcoming exhibitions that you are participating in (even with another Society) and any information that you consider would be of interest to members. We also publish photos of your work from winning in the White, Blue, Gold and Platinum and also awards at our Annual Exhibition. The Newsletter is filed in the records of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, The State Library and most importantly The National Library, Canberra. This means that records of your paintings and achievements will be available for perusal by generations to come on a national level. Website Our Website includes in addition to other information a section for member artists to provide their CV and also display six (6) of their paintings. These can be updated whenever you wish. This facility is provided at the moment FREE. Most Societies if not all charge a fee for this in addition to the subscription. Visit the site and see those artists already listed. If you wish, as we hope you will, you can put up a gallery by contacting Sue Moss and giving her relevant information. This website is visited frequently by outside sources. Facebook The Society s Facebook is now available for members who are signed up to Facebook. Like our Facebook page to receive regular updates on what s happening at the society. If you wish to contribute any information or photos etc. to the site please contact Sandy Ng by and she will arrange it for you. This is another free service which you may avail of. Page 2 of 9

Val Brooks pastel from her Rottnest series titled Early Walk won best pastel and also best in show at the Dalwallinu Art show. MEMBERS EXHIBITIONS The Watercolour Society Exhibition in which many of our members will be exhibiting will be held at the Italian Club, Fremantle from October 15 to 18 inclusive. WHITE, BLUE, GOLD AND PLATINUM COMPETITION The Committee has reviewed the White, Blue, Gold and Platinum Competition and resolved the following: Points Awarded In Each Category o First place 2 points o Runner Up 1 point In the event of a tie for 1st Place, 2 points will be awarded to each artist however there will be no runner up point awarded. A minimum of 2 paintings must be exhibited in a category for points to be awarded. Points required to move to the next category: o White to Blue 6 points (previously 2) o Blue to Gold 6 points o Gold to Platinum 8 points The object of this competition is to have as many artists as possible take part. cornerstone of our founding charter is: ENCOURAGE - EDUCATE - EXHIBIT The By entering your paintings you are honouring the above with the principle of Show & Tell and you are encouraged to discuss your own and other peoples work with your peers for mutual benefit. This is why time is set aside before the General Meeting and in the supper break before the demonstration for this purpose. As an incentive to members to enter paintings and progress through the categories it has been decided to reward those who by participating over a long period have reached the Platinum level. On achieving Platinum an artist will receive a Certificate making them a Fellow of the Society. They will be entitled to use the letters FWASA after their name that they are a Fellow of the West Australian Society of Arts. Page 4 of 9
This is a reward not for their painting ability, though this is undoubted, but for the contribution that they have made to the Society and to the other members over a period of time by attending Meetings and exhibiting their work. A new list has been prepared for each category. It is your responsibility to look up your name and ensure that your painting is displayed in the correct category. WHITE SECTION Winner: Kshanti Wikramanayake Runner-up: Gayle Russell & Geoff Lucey BLUE SECTION Winner: Andy Conlin Runner-up: Rayma Reany GOLD SECTION Winner: Florence Reisenger Runner-up: Mary Cowell Page 5 of 9
PLATINUM SECTION Winner: Paul Drury Runner-up: Tim Sewell & Dave Conlin DEMONSTRATION Paul Drury Paul s demonstration was titled Watercolour Fast & Loose. He said that he was influenced by Ron Ransom who whilst not one of the great water colourists had the philosophy follow the rules but otherwise have a good time go out and paint and enjoy the setting. To make your painting interesting it is important to achieve impact and contrast. This is accomplished by including the following passages in your paintings where applicable: o Light/Dark o Warm/Cool o Texture/Plain o Detailed/Loose o Strong Contrasts o Busy/Empty o Focal Point Paul had prepared a visual presentation with the main points projected onto the screen which was most effective. He first outlined the enemies of a good painting which are: o Mud o Monotony o Overworking These can be avoided by our friends o A Big Brush o Hairdryer Page 6 of 9
o Pure Colour o White Paint To overcome our enemies know in advance what you are going to paint so that you can finish it in one session. Using a large brush, a limited palette and covering the paper as quickly as possible with pure colour. He then covered the following: o Setting the Mood o Daytime Bright/Sunny/Strong Primaries o Evening/Early AM Grey Tones When painting Fast & Loose be prepared to use strong washes, let accidents happen, let paints mix on paper with other colours by floating paint. In the short time left to him Paul painted a waterscape with juicy washes and used a dryer to contain certain passages. In a very short time he created a vibrant painting which embodied all the elements of the demonstration Fast & Loose. Thank you Paul for reminding us of the magic of watercolour when you are brave and loose. Peter Page 7 of 9
DEMONSTRATION Sue Hibbert-Arnautovic Sue Hibbert-Arnatautovic who demonstrated an atmospheric painting of a scene from her overseas travels has kindly provided us a photo of her finished painting. GENERAL MEETING The next General Meeting will be held at The Palms on Thursday 15 October 2015 at 7.00pm. There will be a White, Blue, Gold and Platinum competition and a demonstration. The next Committee Meeting will be held at the Pavilion on Monday 19 October 2015 at 2.00 pm.
