I hope you all had a wonderful break over the festive season and took the opportunity to get some rest, catch up with friends and family and perhaps get a bit of art done. The committee has been working hard to present social night demonstrations and workshops, details of which can be found on our website, under activities. Bob Rennie, our marvelous volunteer maintenance person, has put a lot of time and effort into our facility, his latest gem was to reinforce a shelf in the back storeroom as well as installing another shelf on the back wall. Added to that he has hung all the hair driers on the side of the cupboard by the rear fire door and hung the cable ties on the door. The Autumn exhibition is to be opened by, (to be announced), at am on the 2nd of March, our Featured Member is Tony Wynne. But wait there is more, the committee has bought a heart defibrillator for emergencies and Bob installed the cabinet on the wall by the kitchen. Thank you very much Bob, your work is very much appreciated. Please attend if you are able. Invitations will be sent out in about 2 weeks. Receiving is between 1.30 and 3.30 on Saturday the 23rd February. Selection begins at 1.30 on Sunday the 24th February, hanging at 1.30 on Wednesday the 27th February. The opening will be at am on the 2nd of March. Sitting/open days are Saturdays the 2nd and Sunday 3rd, Saturday 9th, Sunday the 10th, Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th of March. If you can see your way clear to sit at the exhibition with a committee member from 11.00am 3.00pm on any of those days please let me know on adelaideartsociety@gmail.com. Entry forms can be downloaded from our website The defibrillator. This will talk you through the procedure very clearly in easy to understand steps and there are an instruction book and quick help guide in the cupboard. More information will be sent out by soon. He has exhibited extensively with a number of wellknown art galleries in Adelaide and the South East and has been successful in winning numerous prizes. He has been a finalist in a number of Art Shows such as the prestigious Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize. Rod will demonstrate the lessor known medium of gouache. It will be interesting to learn how the qualities of gouache and water-colour compare and to see the use of this medium in action. 4 Report on October Social Night with Julie Goldspink On the eve of the weekend workshop with Julie Goldspink, we were favoured with a demonstration by Julie on using water-colour on canvas. Julie prefers to use Frederick Archival Watercolour canvas and likes to use a larger size, the equivalent of a full water-colour sheet namely 18 x24. She inserts the pegs that come with the frame to ensure the canvas retains its stretch. The canvas is prepared with a Daniel Smith or Schminke ground. Julie doesn't like to use masking fluid to retain the whites of the ground, apart from using it with a toothbrush for the spray effect of waves in seascapes. Instead, she ensures the white of the ground is retained where the painting needs the light. She proceeded to build up the painting, moving from light to darker tones then added the dramatic darks. She then used a Needle Point Rigger for the final line work. This brush is like a liner but has a bulbous base and so can hold more paint. (Neef brand can be ordered in through Premiers in 4 sizes, 3, 4, 6, and 8.) The final painting successfully portrayed the atmosphere and beauty of the bushland setting. The demonstration was enjoyed by all. Article based on notes kindly provided by Mignon Vorsey. Julie uses Daniel Smith water-colour paints, which are readily available in Adelaide e.g. at Art to Art. They are a larger 15ml tube and cheaper than Winsor and Newton. They are similar in quality to Maimeri Italian Watercolour paints. Julie s palette consists of the following colours: Aureolin, Cadmium Yellow, Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Sepia, Pyrrol Red, English Red, Quinacridone Coral, Alizarin Crimson, Carbazole violet, Phthalo Green, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Moonglow (a warm violet), Manganese Blue Hue (instead of Cerulean Blue), Cobalt Teal Blue. Quinacridone are transparent synthetic colours. The composition for the demonstration was based on a photo of an area which Julie enjoys. She sketched in the basic composition with a brush using a warm sienna. A brush, she feels, is better than using a pencil as that may cut or mark the canvas. She then used a synthetic mop to lay in the bigger washes. She uses the same painting technique as when using paper but with canvas there is the added texture of the fabric to add to the effect. 5 BOOK REVIEW Recent library purchase A Visual History - The Royal South Australian Society of Arts Volume One, Edited and compiled by Adam Dutkiewicz, published by the Royal South Australian Society of Arts Inc., 2016 the early and mid-twentieth century, as well as late and post-modern artists. The publication highlights the breadth and depth of the artistic talent SA has nurtured and gives recognition to the energy and passion of the artists who have been a part of the Society. Chris Braham The South Australian Society of Arts was formed on 15 Oct 1856 by Charles Hill and is therefore the oldest continually running art society in Australia. A Visual History is an important publication providing a detailed and fascinating account of the development of this Society and its place in the artistic life of Adelaide from early colonial days to the present. There is also background to the establishment of other key art groups that have made a significant cultural contribution to South Australia. Much of the text has been taken from documents of the day giving an authentic voice to the narrative such as newspaper reviews, e.g. South Australian Gazette. South Australian Register, exhibition reports, catalogues, newsletters etc. It was interesting to read of the significant role played by the SA Society of Arts in establishing art education in the fledging colony. There are biographies of early notable artists and those from more recent times, giving their background and influences. The artistic style for which the artists were best known is described and illustrated with colour images of their paintings, sculptures or portraits. Although this publication is quite a heavy tome, I found it a most absorbing read. It highlighted the key role of The South Australian Society of Arts in providing exhibition opportunities, which gave local artists an avenue for recognition of their artistic endeavour. Volume Two, published in 2017 has also been purchased. This volume includes other significant early artists, but the focus is more on important South Australian artists from Noel and Mike at our Christmas lunch 5
